As I understand it, portions of the show will be devoted to the story of the FIRST avatar, who is that shaggy-looking guy running around.

Now I'm even more mad a Comcast for cutting Nickelodeon off from their cheapest package.  First no Spongebob, now they'll have me miss this! :khaaan:

REMINDER SPOILER IS IN THE THREAD TITLE

Episode One: evil spirits are attacking and the world is going to suffer! Bolin dates creepy girl. Aang family needs vacation.
Episode 2: fixed spirit thing. Now civil war looms. Korra hates her dad. Bolin becomes slave of his gf. Aang family vacation.
Episode 3: shots fired. Attempted assassination! Korra now loves her dad. Bolin tries to break up with gf. Aang family fights.

Seriously. Every plot point is instantly solved or escalated without tension or build up.
These guys know they can slow down a bit, right? Don't have to cram so much in an episode, right?

The Aang kids were my favourite part of episode 3, though.  Their interactions and family dynamic was very well done.

If they relaxed a bit with the pacing they show would become phenomenal instead of alright.

I think they're actually trying to build up to the actual plot as soon as possible, since Unalak(?) is so obviously evil and manipulating Korra for reasons. No need to drag that along for half the season.

You think the spirit thing is resolved? Pretty sure the show has been telegraphing "Unalak is actually controlling the spirits for Nefarious™ purposes" pretty hard. Which is part of what is making this season feel like a lead weight. Bolin is wrapped up in stupid girlfriend plot! Aubrey Plaza is being wasted! Korra keeps getting in physical fights and not using much bending for some reason! Mako got even more boring! Everyone is angry at each other because they're all having an Who Can Be Mad For the Stupidest Reason fight! The show is still throwing in RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES political speech and I'm not sure if they understand what any of it means!

Honestly, the last episode was terminally boring except for the stuff with Tenzin's family. The fight between the family members felt like real conflict and it adds depth to how Aang was as an adult. Honestly, pacing isn't their problem. Boring shit is their problem.

Nah, I don't think it's resolved, I think that's the actual plot. What I meant was that it was setting up the new characters as soon as possible. The whole korra getting angry at her dad is the sort of unimportant part, but they had to introduce her dad somehow.

Sorry, that "Spirit world resolved" question was directed at Lottel. The season seems to be shaping up to be about family, but it needs to start letting its characters have conversations with each other and do things. You know, reflecting on it, one of the things that seems to be bugging me is that Korra seems to be passive this season. All of the adults around her are the ones making decisions and hatching plans while she just waits.

The first series of Avatar was always good about having a goal for Aang and the Avatar crew, giving them reasons to keep pushing on and flying around the world. Even the first season of Korra gave her mysteries to solve and the drive to go out and do them. This season, Korra just seems to hang around until an older character tells her how to deal with a situation. Korra needs to get some oomph in her.

All her life she's been told she's the Avatar and that she needed to master all four elements.

She's pretty much peaked.

Well that's part of the conflict, no. She's kind of fed up with other people telling her what to do but yet when Unalaq tells her what to do she eats that up anyway. She's more brawn than brains.

Korra just wants to already be the Avatar and she's tired of waiting to "become" it. She wants to fix a problem with the Spirit World because a good Avatar would. Unalaq is abusing that (and I think my biggest problem so far is how clearly villainous he is) by giving her that job to earn trust. I really like what they're doing with Mako, because he's playing the other half of Unalaq fairly well: he doesn't want to just tell her what she wants to hear because she's being stubborn, but he cares about her. He's being used fairly effectively as the middle ground between people who are more interested in her much later well-being and duty versus people who will use her innate bullheadedness to achieve their own goals.

My reaction to the last bits of episode three were "Holy shit Korra just said something smart!", a little bit of horrible after-school special dialogue and finally "Holy shit, the villain just did something indescribably stupid!"  Are we supposed to be left wondering if he's got some crazy Xanatos plan in play or are we just supposed to overlook his shooting himself in the foot the same way we were asked to overlook the waterbender whose plans fall apart if he gets wet?

The latest episode explains why Unalaq had seemingly shot himself in the foot. And yeah, he had just figured out Korra was that gullible, he just didn't count on her going all psycho and assaulting a judge.
