Day Z: Multiplayer Zombie survival FPS/RPG
« on: April 25, 2012, 01:34:24 PM »

So I mentioned this mod in the game dump thread, but I think I need to make a whole thread about it.

Day Z for Arma 2 is a mod that's basically what people have wanted out of a multiplayer Zombie game for some time:
-Large, open world.
-Persistent characters across multiple servers - every server references the same player database
-Food, water, and health* are simulated
*Health is measured in blood as a value, and you'll bleed until bandaged. The you regain blood over time and through blood packs found at hospitals.
-Play/Do what you want. Find some friends and survive as a team or just go solo and be an asshole who kills people for supplies.
-Day/Night cycle is tied to the time of the server. All real-time.
-Mods and Teamspeak allow location-based voice chat. You'll hear people near you at proper volume (most of the time)

ArmA 2 (Day Z mod) - Running from horde

At the moment the mod is buggy since it's the 0.1 release.. But if nothing else it gives some very interesting videos and scenarios to watch. I'll have some actual gameplay reports later tonight probably - supposedly they fixed my technical issue. I can give a definitely "Worth buying Arma 2 for" or not at that point.

A more mundane moment to moment video:
Arma 2 Day Z mod Done right!

Ps. I guess if you actually own Arma2 and all the shit you can get started here. That's how you install it all.

Reading the stories people have about this game already makes me want to buy ARMA 2 so I can also become a bandit asshole. We need to become a group of assholes to take over the world.

PS: They enabled vehicles in the newest update.

Quote
I spent the last few hours on various servers attempting to refine the art of the sole bandit. So far the following lessons have been learned.

Lesson 1: Psyops in chat is vital. Play nice, seem helpful, be a 'good guy' - but all the while be remembering where people are and never let them know you're nearby. Lots of pubbies like to give their position, either intentionally or on accident, and you can use it against them and the other people coming to help or hunt them.

Lesson 2: Never, ever reveal yourself. Travel carefully, and using the intel from Lesson 1, know where other players are at so you can be careful not to accidentally walk out in front of them. If people know you are around and other players start dropping, you're immediately on the short list of culprits - but if nobody knows you're in the area...

Lesson 3: Occasionally, make a friend. This evening I logged in and was 10 feet away from a pair of people who spotted me and made a call. I followed Lesson 1, offered to trade, and when they announced they were poor I backed off and let them go. Later, they vouched for me in chat when someone suggested I was a bandit.

Lesson 4: Let other people do the dangerous things for you. The cities quickly turn into deathtraps. One false move and you can easily end up with a zombie on you - which necessitates a shot, which violates Lesson 2, and draws more zombies, which require more bullets, which draws more attention...most people will move around, you can usually find good places on the edges of towns to hide where zombies won't wander, but you can get good lines of fire on travellers who are well equipped.

Lesson 5: Leave no witnesses. The worst thing you can do is ever let someone see you fire on them. Which makes taking down teams extremely dangerous unless you are well prepared. You might kill one, but as soon as someone can get sight on you, your name will hit chat as a bandit and everything else has gone to waste. Attack lone travellers and if for whatever reason your ambush fails, don't be afraid to fall back. Finding other players in this game, especially at night, is extremely difficult if they don't want to be found.

Lesson 6: Never assume safety. Earlier tonight I found a great perch near Cherno and just watched the area(Lesson 4) - after not long at all a lone traveller who had never announced he was in the area walked past at 100m and I put him down with my 1866 - he never saw me, and he was carrying an AKM with 5 magazines as well as a Revolver with 5 speedloaders. A huge haul - all because he left Cherno and assumed the danger was behind him so he could just run freely down the road. Don't let this be you.

This pretty much makes this sound like Stalker the MMO. Which works well into my plan of being a bandit from Stalker.

I... own ARMA 2.

Arma2/OA/PMC/BAF? You need all of them for best effect. You need Arma2/OA at bare minimum.

Smiler: Another reason it's important to stay hidden is because your model changes if you start playing like a bandit. People will be able to visually identify you as an asshole

Wondered around in the night on the Russian server. I was close to a few people, but I never managed to see any. I found a crossbow, and I think I know where I logged off.

it costs between 30 and 40.
30 for Combined Forces (necessary) and 10 for PMC. i didn't see anything saying any of the other expansions were necessary but even if they are the anniversary edition is $60

Just a warning: Arma 2 is clunky as hell, and the fact that this mod is in the early stages of development doesn't help things much.

Otherwise I am having fun aimlessly wandering around. I found one of the big cities, and it is pretty fun to sneak around in. You can almost match the gunshots up to the "* had died" messages. While I was running around to meet Joxam on like the other side of the map, I capped a bandit who was apparently too dumb to see the guy he was running right past. One shotgun slug in the back was all it took.  :8D:

I managed to find a shot gun and revolver really early and I've racked up about three dozen zombie kills already. Running low on ammo but I've got enough food and water to last a while. Still... I'll have to go back to town soon to pick up ammo.

i am hesitant to get Arma 2 since it might not run on my laptop, but once i have a sufficiently powerful computer (god knows when) I will be all over this shit. I just hope the community hasn't completely died off by then.

Nex: There is a demo for Operation Arrowhead you should try if you are not sure if it will run on your computer. You could also try the free version of Arma 2, but vanilla Arma 2 runs a lot worse than Operation Arrowhead. And don't worry about the community dying. Right now the only reason the servers aren't full is because people are having trouble connecting to them. When I first started playing yesterday all of the servers were full.

So far I'm loving this but wondering HOW SOME IDIOTS SURVIVE AT ALL. Saw a guy running and gunning around killing zombies(Not what you're trying to do at all) I decide to wait him out, let him die and loot his body, he MIRACULOUSLY survives but is bleeding to death slowly, runs up to me and starts yelling about needed bandages and if I don't give him one blah blah, I shoot him in the face. Thing that makes ME mad is that he was verbally threatening me but killing him makes ME a bandit. Still, I got a nice 1911 out of it and a few clips of ammo and some food. Also me and Smiler and James hooked up and were moving as a coordinated group then the game becomes less EVERYTHING WILL KILL ME and more moving squad of tactical death. Still, we fucked up and went to a fire house that had a lot of military zombies, I got killed but we got the others... THEN FOR SOME REASON JAMES WALKED OFF THE ROOF. So we're spread out again.

Today started out great. I rolled off of the tower I was perched on and lost about 3k blood and broke my legs. Fixed all of that, and then started moving away from a city to get to a smaller town with a hospital and store. Run into two shmucks out in the wilderness. One was a bandit, so I immediately shoot the non-bandit in the head, and then gun down the other guy. Lost almost all of my blood, but it was worth it. One of the guys had matches and a hunting knife. And two blood packs which I cannot use because I am all alone, so those will go in my backpack with the other 5.
