Between here (well, Bervenia) and Besselat lies the Beddha Sandwaste.

That's what I said.

We rumble up.

Hey R2, you're out of formation, buddy.

R2: One might say the same of a Knight Templar so far from the Church. What is it you scatter to the wind?
Barich: Oh, that? I suppose there's no harm in your knowing. There's naught you can do to stop it now.
R2: Stop what!?
Barich: This.

And a pretty damned effective one, too. Barich just poisoned my robot.

Barich: The toxin will not kill the men who breathe it -- but it will wither their constitution, rendering them unable to fight.
R2: But why? The High Confessor stands to gain naught by handing victory over to Goltanna!
Barich: Nor does he think to. The moment Goltanna hears of the Northern Order's plight, he will send his armies against them. With his own stronghold unguarded, Goltanna will be an easy target for assassination, and Count Orlandeau with him. But do not think Duke Larg will escape this scourge -- his is the easy death to achieve. Amidst the coming chaos, who could say how Duke Larg might meet his end?
R2: You're inhuman!
Barich: You ought rejoice! This will mean an end to war and bloodshed. And with that end, a new beginning. The Church's hand shall rule. Such is the will of the people. They clamor for change -- an end to groveling at highborn heels.
R2: The war will end, but not like this. There is another way!
Barich: I expected you'd say as much -- no matter!

Barich goes first, firing a magical icebullet like the one we saw in Gollund. Usually stealing that gun from him is priority #1 in this battle, but sine we went to Gollund first, nbd.

Barich has the same Arm- and Leg-sniping abilities Mustadio does, but oddly he doesn't use them much in this fight.

The whole point of this formation was to space out the chocobos  next to R2 so they could Esuna away the starting poison. At the very least for Construct 8, for whom regular White Magic Esuna will never work.

Speaking of regular White Magic Esuna, it missed Reis. Dammit.

Geomancy does in the chocobo wounded by Barich's opening shot.

Barich: How do you propose to purge Ivalice of her corruption? Her fever will not cease to rage till her festered limbs are cut and seared! Even you must see that now!

Yeah! There's Count Orlandeau, he's a good guy. And there's... uh...

...um...

...Besrudio?

Barich: So long as you blight it with your existence, we must bow to your whims. A man alone might know equality. Two men, never! One will ever seek to exploit the other. And I will not be exploited! I will claim my seat, and take what is my due. I should think I have at least that right!
R2: You think to cure the realm's corruption by becoming part of it? What when another comes to claim your seat? You care not for Ivalice's suffering -- you care only for your own!
Barich: Such righteous words! More the greater your hypocrisy!

Two chocobos down.

Oh yeah. I haven't done the job review yet, but a Bard's standard weapon is a harp. You play a short arpeggio not entirely unlike the opening of the Crystals theme from most Final Fantasy games, and then your opponent gets hurt somehow.

In the case this one, you absorb HP too.

Southern Sky Knight: Please, my lord. Do not make this harder than it must be. We have our orders.
Orlandeau: Why in the name of all that's good would I wish to unseat my liege lord?

Goltanna: It seems you have been in league with members of the Church, working secretly to see me ousted from my rightful seat.
Orlandeau: That is absurd! From what lying blackguard did you hear such reverie!?
Goltanna: Even yet you deny it? My information comes from the High Confessor himself. You can imagine his distress upon learning of the plot.
Orlandeau: Your Grace, the High Confessor deceives you! It is he who schemes in the shadows!
Goltanna: The High Confessor? Now there is an august claim! Have you any evidence of this?
Orlandeau: Twenty and more years of loyal service, and still you require evidence? Words fail me, Your Grace.
Goltanna: As you fail me. I cannot hope to fight a war without your Order's forces. Still, it seems I am left no choice. A lamentable situation for us both. Take him from my sight!

The knights had to shove Orlandeau a couple of times to get him out of the room.

Goltanna: Once the Confessional rescript is in my hands, Larg is as good as defeated.
Delita: Fear not, Your Grace. The High Confessor's mind is most firm on that account.
Goltanna: Hmm. He had seemed somewhat indifferent to me. There is another matter as well. I am placing the Order of the Southern Sky under your leadership. Henceforth, you are a Knight Devout.

That makes Delita second-in-command to Duke Goltanna, the position held by Orlandeau until... well, a few minutes ago. If Goltanna dies, Delita is regent to the crown. And if Larg is also dead...

Delita: You grant me honor far beyond my due.
Goltanna: I expect I shall not regret it. I place my full and utter confidence in you, Delita -- you, and you alone.
Delita: Your Grace.

The Bard:
Bards are the toughest magic-based class to get, save perhaps for the Arithemetician. They require four levels each of Summoner and Orator, and only males can take the job. (Women get Dancer by earning four levels in Dragoon and Geomancer instead.)
Bards are a purely support class, singing Bardsongs that buff up their allies. They equip the aforementioned harps as weapons, and can wear clothes and hats (but not robes).

Bardsongs put their user into "Performing" status as they charge. After they're selected, the Bard will automatically sing a verse of the selected song as it charges. The Bard still gets turns and may move freely, but doing any other action ends the Bardsong.
Life's Anthem and Seraph Song both increase the HP and MP of all allies, respectively.
Rousing Melody, Battle Chant, and Magickal Refrain each target all allies for a potential +1 to Speed, PA, and MA respectively, but may miss.
Nameless Song tries to boost all allies with one of Reraise, Regen, Protect, Shell, or Haste, but may miss.
Finale is the slowest song to sing, but each time a verse is recited, all allies have a chance of having their CT boosted to 100, giving them a turn instantly.

Magick Boost and Faith Boost give the user MA and Faith increases when they are hit. As usual, every cumulative +4 to Faith gives a permanent +1 increase, but the MA goes away at the end of the battle.

Who would use Equip Harps anyway?

Bards get Move+3, making it only available to men. (I am told the PSP rerelease allows women to get Move +3 through a different job.)
Fly does what you'd expect, lifting the user off the ground to move and ignoring obstacles and water that may otherwise slow them. It's almost as good as Teleport.

I'm always a little disappointed when the bard job doesn't have a "hide" command.

I love Edward. He's so bad.

Yep.

There's a choice of which front to approach by, but I can never remember which is which and both of them are kind of dull by-the-numbers battles anyway.

Sure, let's go with that.

"What? No. No, of course not. We know who's going to assassinate the Duke and it's certainly not u-- I'm not helping, am I?"

"It wasn't him either."

Ninjas go first, and then are the first to go.

A thief does a little tiny stabby pinprick to my behemoth's hide, for which the retaliation is dire indeed.

Think of this outside game mechanics and turn divisions. A giant monstrous beast with horns and claws as big as a man just climbed up to the ramparted wall of this section of the castle and ran from one end to the other, goring every single guard on the way. Kick ass.

This guy has Phoenix Downs.

"Haha, I learned from before! I'm using a little wooden shield instead of a big conductive metal oAAAAAAARRRRGH"

WHY DO YOU KEEP REVIVING ME JUST SO I CAN DIE AGAIN

WHEN WILL MY SUFFERING END

Oh hey thanks I needed a little ARRRRRRGH

Finally.

The spirit crystals dropped by these guys give me approximately dickall.

Northern Sky Knight: It's only my... my head... I'll be... fine.

You might remember Mossfungus as a recurring enemy in the series. I think the debuted in the Dimensional Rift in FF5, but I could be wrong.

Larg: My head... it is as though it were split in twain. But I do not think it serious. I just need... some time.
Dycedarg: Most unfortunate.

"I've stabbed you. It should be obvious."

Dycedarg twists the dagger into the wound.

Larg: You... you've betrayed me? You killed your father to.. to gain control of your house. And now you have killed me.

Guess Dycedarg is the new regent for Prince Orinus.

Dycedarg: No... No. It is a gift from those who would see House Beoulve take center stage.

The Church, since we saw a Templar spread the poison. High Confessor Marcel has everyone fooled, it seems.

Zalbaag: Why do this? This -- you go too far.
Dycedarg: The dagger. Place it among the corpses. They were assassins. Sent by the Southern Order. You understand me... yes?

His job finished, Dycedarg succumbs to the poison as well.

Too late, really.

And with that, I'm done with Monk.

The Samurai:
Samurai are heavily armored, strong-but-slow warriors. I don't think they started showing up in the job system until FF5, but the tradition is upheld through Cyan Garamonde and Auron in later games nonetheless.
Samurai equip katanas, but not shields. They can wear helmets, heavy armor, and robes.
A Samurai demands training in Knight, Monk, and Dragoon, but doesn't lead to anything else.

Each equippable katana in the game has an associated skill. With the skill mastered, a Samurai may hold up a katana out of item stock (it doesn't have to be equipped) and release the spirit forged into the blade. Most have an area of effect two panels in radius, centered on the Samurai. Harmful effects ignore allies and beneficial effects ignore enemies. There's a small chance each time a Samurai uses his Iaido abilities that the sword breaks and is lost.
Ashura, Kotetsu, Ama-no-Murakumo, Muramasa, and Chirijiraden are all damaging effects. Muramasa might also cause Confusion status. Osafune does MP damage instead of HP. Kikuichimonji is an attack, but strikes out in a straight line instead of an area effect.
Murasame recovers some HP to allies. Kiyomori adds Protect and Shell status; Masamune addes Haste and Regen.

Bonecrusher is a counterattack move that, like Goblin Punch and Almaguest, subtracts the user's current HP (after the hit that triggered Bonecrusher) from their max HP and does that much damage.
Shirahidori is one of the best defensive counter skills in the game. Simply put, weapon attacks and skills based on weapons (such as Arts of War and Aim) are reduced in accuracy by Bravery%. For R2 and his 97 Bravery, that would mean attacks have at best 3% chance to hit him. It's not supposed to work on arrows, crossbow bolts, and bullets -- that's what Archer's Bane is for -- but due to a bug in the game, it totally does.

Two Hands lets the user grip a weapon using, yes, two hands. This doubles the base weapon attack power using the "Attack" command, but not other skillsets based on weapons. It's not bad, if you're willing to forego using a shield. Naturally, a weapon has to be one-handed and of sufficient size for this to work -- daggers and longbows don't apply, for example.
Equip Katana does exactly what it says it does.

Swim is the same as the Chocobo ability. Water does not slow movement, and deep water does not inhibit taking actions.

Of course! What?

Oh.

But I don't know hoowwwwwwwwww...!
(In the PSP rerelease, the object of this mission became "Defeat all enemies!")

It's a job only R2 can do, and there are Knights on both lever panels who are reluctant to move away from them.

You're up against a couple Archers, a few Knights, and two Black Mages, one of which Reis killed already. You'll be fine.

I'll be honest, I do not remember behemoths being this awesome in previous playthroughs. This guy pretty well oneshots anything he can land a hit on.

Reis is a prime target as both Archer and Black Mage do their best to take her out.

A couple of lasers fix that, though.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the sluice gate, my Dark Behemoth uses Almaguest to revenge blast some of the damage he's taken climbing the hill.

FALCON

HIT YOU IN THE HEAD WITH A GIANT HAMMER ARM

That behemoth's magic really hurts! I know! I'll shoot him with an arrow for some extra damage!

I don't know if Tasks have an auto-100% hit rate, but they never seem to miss.

That's everybody, but the battle doesn't end until I've flipped the switches.

Which I refrain from doing for a few turns.

That's Depth 4 water, too deep to stand in at all. I can't even teleport into it. A squidmage-type monster could, if I felt like bringing one. To my knowledge this is the only map with water so deep that it can't be crossed by anything but a squidmage.

It can wait.

In fact, I set everyone to AI for several turns. The monsters, without targets for their limited skillsets, just stand around. R2 uses his Mettle skills to buff up himself (and Reis, occasionally) for the JP.

Sometimes I put my units down there in the shallow water, while it's still shallow before I open the sluice gate, just for kicks.

One of the lines for that pornographic Final Fantasy-themed script I wrote.

"I appear to be in a warehouse instead of a proper dungeon, but what can you do?

Orlandeau: Yes, although I can't say I'm surprised you've forgotten. You were only a child of some three or four years at the time. You gave us all quite a fright, trying to lift my sword. Your father gave you a scolding that left you in tears, but at least you weren't hurt.

On the other hand, who leaves a knightsword just lying around where any toddler can reach it?

Orlandeau: Ha ha ha. And now you've come to rescue me. I thank you.

Orran: We've managed to hold the fires of war at bay, for a time.
Orlandeau: I see. You are a worthy son of Barbaneth, young R2. There are many who owe you their thanks, and I give it now in their stead. And mine with it, to be sure.
R2: I do only what must needs be done.

Sounds like the old translation, again.

Orlandeau: I see your likeness to Barbaneth is more than skin deep. Your deeds honor him, boy.

Orran: We should continue this elsewhere.
Orlandeau: Yes, yes. It won't do for me to remain here with Goltanna in this ill temper. Orran, the hour of this war's end will not be long in coming. Until it does, I mean to travel with R2. We must put a stop to the High Confessor's plans.
Orran: Then I will go with you, my lord!
Orlandeau: No. You will return to Zeltennia and see to the safety of Lady Ovelia. She alone is the rightful heir to the throne. You must see that she comes to no harm.

I dunno, the body double of the deceased adopted princess versus the four-year-old illegitimate son of the queen. I'd say anyone in this room has as much right to the throne as either of those "heirs".

Orran: I understand.

R2: None at all, my lord. Sorry bro, you're only a monster in the figurative sense.
Orlandeau: Then let's away before we're found.

Goltanna: You are to gather a company of soldiers and move against the Northern Sky at once!
Delita: The water from the sluice makes movement difficult enough, let alone fighting.
Goltanna: Whats sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. This is an opportunity we cannot let pass! They will not be expecting an attack. If they slip away now, who can say how long this war may drag on?
Delita: I must refuse.
Goltanna: Refuse!?

This body double had a name in the original PSX translation.

As expected, the way to Limberry opens. It's a two-day journey through the Dolvauldar Wetlands from here, but for some reason we have to go through Zeltennia first. Oh well.

Excalibur is arguably the best knightsword in the game, and you get it for free when Orlandeau joins. It gives the user auto-Haste (!!!), strengthens Holy-elemental attacks, and the user absorbs Holy-elemental damage.
Orlandeau also has better armor than is available in shops until after I finish Limberry, so hey, I'll take that too.

Nope.

Just in case.

I also pick up the two Iaido abilities that are from swords available in shops that have defensive/restorative abilities: Kiyomori for its area Protect/Shell, and Murasame for its area heal.

Off to Sol Ghidas.

Known in most games as "A minor speedbump since we just got Orlandeau in the party."

Brentai has mentioned that the localizers used a style guide each for Lucavi, nobles, knights, commoners, and thugs. This, clearly, is the "thug"  speech set.

You know what this great bestial murder machine really needs? More staying power. Kiyomori it is.

The yellow chocobo is a prime target for enemy attacks, and Construct 8 could use the protection too I guess. But oddly, Kiyomori always misses Construct 8 despite having nothing to do with Faith. I guess he's immune to Protect and Shell.

Reis is such a high-priority target for enemies here I have to actually use Chant to keep her going until the chocobo can get over here to Choco Cure her.

Ah, that's the stuff.

Hey, this guy was a Samurai-in-training! I pick up two Iaido attack skills.

And this guy was such a good thrower that he could always make a dictionary hit corner-first.

The screencap delayed for some reason so all you get to see is the HP backlast Construct 8 suffered for this last hit.

Just for laughs, we head back to Zeltennia and hit the pub.

Nelveska Temple appears on the map, but nothing happens if you go. So let's go somewhere else. Like... Goug. Why not?

O RRERY?

I will openly admit that, overleveled as I am right now, I abuse save states mercilessly to get across the map without any random encounters.

Hey, new monsters. They're called Hydras, and they're awesome. One of my three goals in this map is to recruit one.

The second goal is to use Treasure Hunter to get to one of the pillars they're standing on, because the best shield in the game is hidden there. I can't come back for it, this is a map that's never revisited.

Hey, you look familiar too.

THIS IS TOTALLY A DRILL TH-- UM, NEVER MIND.

I love that we just stood there watching him count for over ten seconds.

Why would you even build a robot with an "annihilation mode" (or as it was called in the previous translation, "genocide mode")?

Seriously it's a mode where not even the service staff are safe. Why would you do this?

And there's the third goal.

Oh, did I mention there are three Cockatrices in this fight, too?

There totally are.

Not even Construct 8 can oneshot one of these birds.

Lasered.

It's a rough battle.

One cunning plan is to start riding my medic-chocobo. Since only the rider can be targeted by attacks, it'll buy a little time for recovery.

Okay, so Construct 8 can oneshot that one, which he does via counterattack.

Featherbomb is Auto-Potioned away.

Another vicious attack...

...countered.

A Hydra's basic attack is one bite each with their three heads, so it strikes not only in front of the Hydra, but to each side as well. In this case gnawed on both R2, who Auto-Potioned away the damage, and Construct 8, who Countered for critical damage.

Construct 8 is then lasered away.

Goal #1: Check.

OKAY, THIS IS A DRILL.

The pillar is in the way, but that's my Dark Behemoth getting KOed.

I need some faster monsters. Maybe I can knock out some of those Cockatrices before they petrify half my party. Now where can I find some high-Speed monsters with powerful attacks...?

My options for R2 in this battle are quite limited. The treasures I'm looking for are on pillars of Height 7, with no easy way up. I need a job with a basic Jump of 4 -- that leaves Monk, Ninja, and Dragoon. I also need to wear Germinas Boots for the +1 to Jump they give. My Move ability has to be Treasure Hunter, or I won't get the treasure at the top even if I reach it.
Even with Jump 5, I can't make a leap up to 7. That's where some monsters come in. See, several monsters -- Hydras, Behemoths, Dragons including Reis, and Construct 8 -- are large and cooperative enough to act as a Height 2 stepping stone when you have to make a large jump. It's not often a very useful feature, but sometimes it can open up the battlefield a little in maps with sheer cliffs, like Balias Tor.
Since I want to recruit a monster here, I also need Speechcraft and Beast Tongue. Speechcraft also lets me lower my own Bravery, since most treasure panels have two treasures on them, and you have Bravery% chance of getting the worse one. So that's that.
My Counter ability is a tough call. Auto-Potion doesn't recover enough damage to match what I'm taking from Hydras and Construct 7. Mana Shield is only really useful when you have some way to restore MP. Shirahidori only works on physical attacks, so while it would stop Hydra bites and Talon Dives, it'd leave me vulnerable to lasers and Featherbombs. Critical: Recover HP would be tempting if I had it, but I'm easily dropped without ever hitting critical HP. So uh... hmm.

Three quick hitters and one large climbable monster.

Damn, still too slow.

I try to exploit the Cockatrices' elemental weakness, but not even that is enough to drop them.

Mana Shield, working exactly once.

Wouldn't it be great if I could equip an accessory that protects against that sort of thing?

Lasered.

Okay, to hell with it. Just let me win. I don't care about Hydras or shields anymore.

Not pictured: RUN THE HELL AWAY OR YOU GET LASERED

It worked, and I lived another turn.

yessssss

You son of a bitch.

You know, I think we can wait to clear Nelveska Temple until later.

Lake Poescas is more salt-crusted dry seabed than, you know, lake.

More undead humans, like in the Yuguewood.

Well, one man, one robit, one dragon, and two giant birds... but yes, with auracite.

Oh yeah, while I was renaming the Red Chocobos I noticed that Construct 8 and Reis are also up for renaming. So my party is four Ahriman named Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde; three red chocobos named Sandy, Cindy, and Mindy; a yellow chocobo named Dr. Feathers; an automaton named The Robit; and Reis the Holy Dragon (for whom I couldn't think up a good name).

Yeah, just try it, floaty.

One Choco Meteor leaves their summoner at 1 HP.

Drain Touch prompted a counterattack from The Robit.

That was barely worth posting.

The previous translation gave his name as "Rofel". To this day I still refer to him as the Rofelcopter.

Dycedarg: Ivalice's reunification under its rightful king was His Grace's most fervent wish. We've no intention of laying down arms until Prince Orinus sits on the throne that is his birthright. You will not steer the helm of Ivalice at your own pleasure. Not so long as this house stands.
Loffrey: Do you not know who made your assassination of the duke possible?
Dycedarg: I mislike the question. Larg was felled by a Southern Sky assassin. Or do you mean to say that you were the ones who sent him?
Loffrey: I'll not play at this fool's game. There is to be no convincing you, then?
Dycedarg: Were it our desire, we could crush the templarate like an overripe grape. Of that I am quite convinced.
Loffrey: Pray remove that fine white cloak beforehand. Burst grapes oft leave a fearsome stain. Tell me, this poison employed at Besselat -- do you know what it was?

There's a pause as Dycedarg stares Loffrey down.

Dycedarg: I believe it was an extract of mossfungus spores.
Loffrey: So it was. An insidious thing, mossfungus. It takes a great quantity to kill a man, but the toxin never leaves the blood. The smallest, most undetectable of doses will prove lethal, if repeated oft enough.
Dycedarg: ...
Loffrey: Even a learned eye might confuse the symptoms with those of common affliction. Oft as not, the person being poisoned is never even aware. And should they become so, it is almost invariably too late. Your late lord father was taken by malady, was he not?
Dycedarg: Do you make some implication?
Loffrey: I'm told you yourself have some knowledge in poisoncraft.
Dycedarg: What of it?
Loffrey: I recently learned an interesting fact. I had wondered if you might be aware of it. Mossfungus poisoning leaves spores in the body. When a victim is buried, they say toadstools sprout above the grave.
Dycedarg: ...

I'm not sure if my inability to screencap the glimmer of a Zodiac Stone when it appears counts as a running gag for this LP, but dag yo.

Loffrey: The High Confessor wished for you to have it. Please accept it as a symbol of the Church's good faith.

Okay kids, we are going to Castle Limberry, and we are going to learn to cast Ultima while we are there.

Ultima is the last skill on R2's class list. It cannot be learned until Chapter 4, and even then only as Blue Magic.

Blue Magic? Yes! While the game doesn't have a Blue Mage class, some spells can be learned in the traiditonal way Blue Mages learn: get hit by the spell in question and survive. Black Mages can learn Blizzaja, Thundaja, and Firaja this way. White Mages can learn Curaja, Protectga, and Shellga. Time Mages can learn Hastega and Slowga. According to the guide I'm reading, Summoners can learn most of their high-level magic this way: Bahamut, Leviathan, Odin, Salamander, Lich, Cyclops, and Zodiark can be learned by a Summoner sturdy enough to survive the effects of the spell.
Usually the big problem is finding an enemy to cast those spells on you in the first place: of all those spells, only Balais' propensity to spam Cyclops is likely to show up often.

But for R2's super-Squire-in-Chapter-4 class, Ultima is one of those spells, and the gates of Limberry Castle is the easiest place to get it.

First, you have to be in the class that can learn the spell.

Woman's Voice: Guests! Guests come to Limberry!

So, here's how to learn Ultima:

Remember what I said their skillset consists of, back on the roof at Riovanes? They have a close-range instant-kill, a long-range Charm, a long-range Stop effect, and Ultima. We'll protect ourselves from Charm and Stop, and make sure to stay far enough away that they can't use their instant-kill move. They'll Ultima every time.

Sure enough, Celia opens with Ultima. Works like a charm.

Simple as that.

So we beat up on the assassins, until...

Oh, and those monsters?

Reavers, formerly known as Apanda. They have a lot of HP and a Bio skillset that inflicts status ailments, but are otherwise nondescript.
