How Do You Take Your Coffee/Tea?
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:46:04 AM »

I take my coffee as black, strong and bitter as I possibly can.  It's not SUPPOSED to taste good, damn it, it's supposed to wake you up!

How about you?

I like to balance the bitter with sugar, and cut the acidity with some kind of cream or fat (like from a french press).
Caffeine is supposed to wake you up, but coffee is supposed to taste good (or at least interesting).
Same goes for tea, but basically I only dress up black teas.

I take mine black, strong, and bitter too, but I don't think that precludes it tasting good.  I like a good bold flavor a lot better than I like something sweet or mild.

Lately I am drinking a hazelnut variety.  I am not fond of it but Amazon was selling a shitload of it for cheap.

I'm unable to swallow unsweetened coffee, and I'm unable to swallow sweetened tea.

I grew up in the South, where iced tea is something that, in a pinch, you can pour over pancakes. It's disgusting but growing up with that I find most black tea to be unpalatably bitter, so a little sweetener is okay.

Green tea and coffee I take unmolested, though.

I never drink coffee and rarely drink tea (usually it's when I get tea or coffee with a breakfast and can't get other drinks). I usually just have a bit of milk in my tea to give it some body. Sugar in tea is foul (though honey can work sometimes).

Strong, from a French press, with just a bit of milk and sugar to take the edge off. Cheap coffee = bad coffee. It serves its purpose, but at what cost???

So the amount of acid or acid-taste in percolated coffee still makes me sick.
The bitter isn't bad exactly, but it makes me wince uncontrollably. Curse my ridiculously sweet palate.

A lot of people like that acidic taste of percolated coffee, I do.

If you like a less acidic and almost sweet tasting coffee, try making some cold brew (look it up). It's great for making iced coffee drinks with and keeps for a long time in the fridge. If you want hot coffee, just make it really concentrated and then add boiled water to it. It's great for people for whom drip or perc coffee would give heartburn. But just be forwarned, it has a lot less caffeine in it.

I usually make my coffee via manual drip method nowadays. I find it not much more work than letting the coffee machine do it. It gives me better temperature control and I do a better job of properly saturating the grinds than the machine which just sprinkles water into the middle really. The result is a noticably stronger and better tasting brew, well worth the little bit of attention it takes.

I take mine black, strong, and bitter too, but I don't think that precludes it tasting good.  I like a good bold flavor a lot better than I like something sweet or mild.

Ho ho ho.

Remember people, don't buy more coffee than you're going to use in a week or so, get beans and grind it yourself (You wouldn't buy champaigne uncorked already, would you?) and I'll see you on the beach.

I used to use an Aeropress.  It was really good!  Made for good strong coffee, flavorful but not acidic or bitter!  Bit of sugar and it's good to go.

But that was when I had more time.  Nowadays it's mostly diet soda, or occasionally Starbucks.  But there, I go for a skinny vanilla latte and skip the sugar.  The most important thing is cutting the coffee bite.

Coffee I take iced with just a dash of cream. Tea I drink hot with a bit of cream and a tiny bit of honey. I don't like to drink things that have sugar in them so I used the bare minimum.

Yeah, I know.  But money's tight, fiancee spotted deal, so I grabbed it and threw most of it in the freezer.

Freezer coffee is not ideal, but it's better than letting it sit at room temperature for weeks.

Speaking of beaches, in the summer I drink my coffee cold.  Because I ain't drinkin' no hot beverages when it's 105 out.

Yeah, I'm just Joshin' you.

Oh and the quantity to ensure freshness was not an other jape, just a general suggestion too all. My parents used to always keep their coffee in the fridge but I've heard from multiple people that it's a at least somewhat pointless measure to take. They say that temperature doesn't really do anything to protect roasted beans, access to air and light are the important factors.

The other thing is, you don't want to keep beans in a completely airtight environment for too long either without giving them a chance to air out a bit every day or so. They still release their CO2 constantly and swimming in a big sea of it for a long time can actually negatively effect the beans' flavour. That's why fancy coffee beans you buy at the store usually have some sort of weird little one way valve on them, manufactured right into the plastic of the bag itself.

But the idea is, you keep them in an airtight container at home and then as long as you are making coffee every day or so, you openning it up to get beans lets the built up CO2 release.

Oh also, I never actually answered the question of the thread. I drink my coffee black now because I've gotten used to the bitterness of coffee and I buy pretty fancy beans from local roasters most of the time and I like to be able to decern the flavour differences between them which sugar might mask. Also I just don't like the idea of dumping a spoon full of sugar into something I'm about to drink anymore. I used to always take cream and sugar but my lactose intolerance put an end to the former. So now I drink it like the Twin Peaks guy, black like the night.

Although I do prefer more of a medium roast. Super black coffee isn't as flavourful and the acidity hurts my tum-tum a bit. Usually I try to put some lactose feel milk or something in to really darkly roasted coffee.

I don't drink coffee. On the off-chance I drink any tea, I like it herbal, without stimulants.

From what I've read the freezer's better than the fridge but still not a great idea and really only advisable if you're not going to be using the beans in the next two weeks.  And the biggest problem is the potential for the beans to absorb other flavors while they're in there.

(Also, there WAS one nut coffee -- macadamia maybe? -- that I drank and liked once.  It was brought fresh from Hawaii though.)

I drink This. I use ghee (since I'm lactose intolerant) and make the coffee in a moka pot every morning. When I'm not avoiding carbs, I prefer my coffee with a ton of soymilk and syrup with it.

I love pretty much all the teas plain. Blacks, greens, mixtures of the two, herbals. Occasionally I like teas with sweetening but I'm happy drinking them without.

Apparently "Hungarian coffee" is black coffee with a scoop of ice cream in it, consumed after a meal. I have been intruiged by this since I first heard of it.

There was a coffee on the menu at the Greek restaurant I worked at. They made it in tiny metal pots with the grounds in.

I imagine it was very potent.

Yeah, that's pretty common at Greek/Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern joints.  They call it Arabic Coffee at the places I go to.

It is indeed potent.  Good with baklava and good if you need to stay up all night.

Do not drink the syrupy-looking stuff in the bottom.
