So Aaron McGruder is kickstarting a live-action  Uncle Ruckus movie(no relation).

David Brothers of Comics Alliance has some thoughts on why this might not be such a good idea.

I get that it's a risk, and that racial comedy ALWAYS walks that line.  (Alf Garnett/Archie Bunker is the classic example; both versions of the show appealed as much to racists as to people who got the point of the satire.)

I don't think McGruder always gets it right -- I think season 2, in particular, veered too far from social commentary into blander tropes.  And Ruckus's abuse NEEDS something to anchor it, something to remind us that we're supposed to be laughing at him, not with him.

But even if it comes out wrong and attracts the wrong people, I don't really see it attracting more than a cult audience.  You might half hipsters insensitively quoting it, but there's no way it'll have the kind of cachet that All in the Family did -- or even Chappelle's Show.

For now I'm willing to put my faith in McGruder -- and, perhaps even moreso, Williams.  That was my very first question on seeing it was going to be live-action: is it still going to be Gary Anthony Williams?  I can't recognize him in that getup, but it's him all right, and that's great news.

I love Aaron McGruder. I have all the comic collections. But Uncle Ruckus is always my least favourite thing out of all he does.
It's just so, I don't know, un-intelligent?

I want to give the guy more of my money but I also don't want to fund Racist Family Guy the Movie. And it's about Ruckus's family? So it's the Cleveland Show but with racial slurs.

Neat.

Respectfully disagree.  He's certainly an exaggerated character, but so is everybody else in Boondocks.  And, while he's usually best in supporting roles, The Story of Jimmy Rebel is one of the funniest things I've ever seen; as far as I'm concerned it's proof he can pull off the leading-man thing.

The Color Ruckus was a bit more uneven; I don't think we needed Ruckus's origin story, but on the other hand meeting his abusive father goes a long way toward explaining why he is the way he is -- while still managing to make his father a sympathetic character, tragic, bitter, and broken for his own very legitimate reasons.  It's not my favorite episode by any means, but it could be a roadmap for how Ruckus can work in a family setting -- his brothers acting as the straight men, regular guys who feel bad for him and are embarrassed by him, but hey, he's still their brother.

Ultimately I don't see why an "Uncle Ruckus with new supporting cast" movie has to function on any different dynamic than "Uncle Ruckus with the Freemans" or "Uncle Ruckus with the Duboises", except that in this case he's the main character.  (Hm -- come to think of it, Tom Dubois is another character who could be trivially translated to live action with the same actor.  Maybe the easiest of the entire cast.)  That definitely sounds like something you don't want to watch if you don't like Ruckus in the first place, but I like Ruckus and I think it could work.

Well, this is pretty neat: a 3D printing pen that can print on surfaces or in the air.

$75 is a bit steep for something I'd probably use once and then forget about, but it's still a cool idea, and I'm sure someone here could make better use of it than I.

Rifftrax seeking rights to Twilight to live-riff it.

They got the money within an hour; they're currently standing at a little over twice their goal.

Of course, it's not a done deal yet and the studio can still say "No thank you" no matter how much they're offered.  So if they don't get Twilight, they're going to go down their fan-picked Worst Movies Ever list until they find a rightsholder who says yes.

OUYA to start shipping to backers in March.

It'll also be in retail stores in June, and if you pre-order from their website, it should ship in April.

Of course, there are still some concerns about software: the biggest games available at launch will be Final Fantasy 3 and, er, The Ball, so you might want to hold off a bit to see how the library shapes up. Unless you pre-ordered through the Kickstarter, in which case,

You know how we always pine for the old days of Magic: The Gathering art? This is an art book reuniting dozens of the artists from the game's early years.

Robin Snyder has set up a kickstarter to put The Ditko Public Service Package #2 (a satire of the comics industry as it stood in 1991) back into print.

It's already well on its way and looks like it'll well exceed the goal.  But I think it could set a great damn precedent.  Most people don't know that Ditko's still working steadily, and it's a bit of a hassle to get your hands on his new work.  I'm hoping Snyder starts to see Kickstarter as a long-term solution to those problems.

James Stokoe: "I’ve asked The Writer to remove my name from any future Sullivan’s Sluggers related product. It’s not a book that I feel good about endorsing, and I’d prefer not to be associated with it any longer."

Oh, and there's now ANOTHER Sullivan's Sluggers kickstarter going, ostensibly because Mark Andrew Smith fucked up the international shipping rates on the first one, but basically, he's just double-dipping, trying to move more books.

If anybody really wants a copy of this thing, PM me, and I'll send you mine, just cover the cost of shipping.

In response, Mark Andrew Smith attempts to throw Stokoe under the bus, claiming he "ruined his life" because of the pace of Stokoe's art output. It's real low, especially since Stokoe has pretty much stayed out of it.

I'll admit, I haven't been following the Sullivan's Sluggers debacle at all, and had no idea there was so much bad blood when I posted the link to the free books. But now David Brothers has posted another recap/opinion piece on the subject that lays out a lot of the problems, and now Smith has entered the list of creators that I won't buy or read.

If I remember correctly, the art was DONE when the kickstarter started. It was just kickstarting the printing and whatnot.

Hell, I only bought it for the art. I thought the story looked bleh.
