« on: November 06, 2012, 05:27:40 PM »

Citizen! Are you tired of working long hours for low wage? Sick of breathing polluted air in overcrowded cities? Is high crime or unhealthy planetary gravity getting you down?

Then sign up for a life of adventure with Tetracorp: the Empire's number one orbital mining conglomerate!

Tetracorp has urgent high-salary openings at new franchises in the Fragmented Sectors, including:

Technical Engineer (30,000+ credits/cycle based on specialization)
Security (24,000 credits/cycle, Imperial military experience preferred)
Investigator (26,000 credits/cycle, minimum Imperial security clearance I-02)
Doctor (34,000+ credits/cycle, radiation treatment specialists urgently needed)
Mining Worker (14,000 credits/cycle)

Enjoy the benefits of a hi-tech, planetary mining colony. Environmental controls provide artificial gravity equal to Earth - but with none of the air pollution and only a fraction of the annual radiation. Dedicated security forces protect workers from crime, while Sci-Tek's advanced computer control systems offer higher safety levels than any Tetracorp mining colonies to date!

To sign up, simply place your thumb print on the scanner below or contact your nearest Tetracorp recruitment centre for more information.

All salaries accurate as of 10 Mar 2379. Listed benefits are provided for informational purposes only and are not representative of all mining franchises. Tetracorp accepts no liability for injury, death, kidnapping, psionic damage, long-term disability or financial loss incurred. Minimum contract 5 years. All Tetracorp mining franches governed by Deep Space Expansion Act 2366 and Tharmaxlon Peace Treaty 2303. As per Tetracorp v. Imahara (2371), industrial espionage may be punished by imprisonment or execution.

Fragmented Sectors 2380 is a one-shot D20 Future investigative game. You play workers on a mining colony over 300 light years from Earth. Frontier mining colonies are fraught with dangers: mining asteroids, alien attack, asteroid collisions, industrial sabotage and equipment malfunctions, to name a few.

Attracted by adventure and offers of high pay, you've come to work for Tetracorp, a company so big it owns several star systems close to Earth. You're stationed at an isolated mining facility on a big rock at the very edge of Terran controlled space. When things start going awry, you soon find yourself working together to investigate the situation.

The rules system is D20 Future, an expansion for D20 Modern. You can find the rules here.

Post in this thread if you're interested.

TOP HEADLINES FOR 11 APRIL 2380

Sci-Tek recalls cybernetic arm implants
Sci-Tek Arcturus corporation has issued a recall of all Series-9 cybernetic arms after last week's report of a security breach at the firm's research and development headquarters. The company, a division of Sci-Tek Research Conglomerate, released the Series-9 implants to the public three years ago.

A Sci-Tek spokesperson said that the recall was "purely a precaution" and "addresses an extremely rare glitch in which the user may temporarily lose control of the limb". Other Sci-Tek implants are unaffected. Citizens fitted with a Series-9 cybernetic arm are urged to make an appointment with the nearest cybernetics clinic as soon as possible.

FTL drive tech breaks 10k barrier
Researchers at the QUB institute on Earth have successfully tested a faster-than-light drive capable of propelling a starship at over 10,000 times the speed of light.

Such a starship could theoretically make a return journey between Sol and Arcturus in under three days.

"This represents a major step forward in space exploration," said Professor Holborn of the QUB astrophysics faculty. However, he urged that it would be some years before such speeds were economically viable for civilian passenger ships.

"Interstellar passenger travel of 1k light speed has only recently become the norm. I suspect it will be ten to fifteen years before 10k technology is standard."

Rules and character creation

http://www.d20resources.com/ has the rules for D20 Modern and D20 Future.

All player characters begin at level 1. You may pick any of the six starting classes and any Occupation that might reasonably be hired on a deep space mining colony.

You may buy any cybernetics or equipment that your starting Wealth allows. Note: Progress Level affects an item's price if it's above or below PL7. All employees are fitted with an identity chip free of charge.

No FX, magic, psionics or mutations are available.

Ability scores are: 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10; arrange as desired. Max HP for level 1. Starting wealth is 5 plus bonuses.

Dice
Dice-wise, which do you think would be easier: dicelog.com or players roll their own dice at home?

Note: Player recruiting is still open.

I guess it comes down to whether or not you're really concerned with people fudging rolls. I like open rolls online not because I don't trust people but because it keeps everything out in the open so there's not even the chance of things looking sketchy.

I also just realized I've never made a D20 character before, shit. *readreadread*

Began cracking out a character sheet, intend to be a Dedicated Hero. Aiming for a Gambling Doctor character. Suggestions for Skills would be appreciated so I can avoid a "Took Piloting, never need to use a Ship" scenario. Right now I'm mostly Medical and some Social abilities(Bluff, Intimidate, Gamble.)

In general, social and technical skills will be useful.

Handle Animal, Read/Write Language, Ride Speak Language and Survival will not be useful. Animals and wilderness are unlikely to be found on a space colony and practically all citizens speak English. Less than 5% of the human population speak a second language, and the odds of meeting someone on a small mining colony who speaks the same language are rare, unless perhaps two PCs were to pick the same language to communicate secretly.

Pilot, Navigate and Drive will be useful, but only in occasional scenes, as most of the story takes place on foot. The main vehicles are transport ships and moon buggies. Forgery will be of limited use as security documents and the like are handled by ID chips and computer systems.

Doom, Stush, Tefari and Kazz are our players, then.

Time to make characters. It's not necessary to fill every role like it is in D&D, but you'll want to get a decent mix of skills and abilities. Chargen rules are a few posts up. PM me the character sheet when you're done.

A little bird (and by bird I mean Stush) told me that you could squeeze in one more player, maybe. Mind if I claim that spot?

The SRD doesn't contain the character generation rules either. I'll have to go look them up. D20 Modern has some different stuff that isn't in the D&D character generation, too.

Those of you who have still to submit a character sheet: You can use the generator script below.

Deadline is 15th January 2013. We need at least four of the five players for the game to go forward.

Handy online character generator script:
