Top Ten Comedies that aren't necessarily comedies
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:18:34 PM »

Again, inspired by a discussion I had with my meatspace friends, those philistines. The movies on this list don't have to be in the comedy genre, but they should be included because they made you laugh.

So here are my top ten, feel free to post yours

I'll also give a little blurb explaining why it's on my list so you have something to read other than a boring list

So here they are, in no particular order

1. The Big Lebowski
I don't think I need to explain why this is here to this crowd (though I had to to my friends because they are heathens) This movie is fucking amazing in almost every way. I'd probably include it on my top ten favorite films of all time, if someone ever pointed a gun at my head and forced me to make that list.

2. Spaceballs
What's that you say? Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and History of the World part 1 are superior Mel Brooks films and Spaceballs is overrated? I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound effects guy from Police Academy. But seriously, those are great movies too. But they don't have Rick Moranis force gripping a guy's balls.

3. American Psycho
Bale pulls off probably the best acting job of his career playing a guy who you should hate but don't. The world he lives in and the people he knows are, if anything, even more shallow and empty than himself. The only ones you even feel sorry for are the hooker and the homeless guy. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go. I have to return some videotapes.

4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Yep, the fans are retarded and have made me sick of every single possible quote in the entire movie. Nope, that doesn't mean the movie isn't fucking amazing. Actually, I can still get a chuckle out of "Perhaps he was dictating" but that's about it.

5. Airplane!
Friday, you can't be serious, putting Airplane! on this list. Get ahold of yourself! *smack*

6. Ghostbusters
Again, not a film I need to explain to this crowd. Rick Moranis doesn't force ballkick anyone, but aside from that, this movie doesn't have any flaws.

7. The Jerk
Steve Martin's first starring role, and probably his best. Millions of people have developed a deep seated hatred of cans due to this movie. The sequence with Martin and Bernadette Peters lying in bed while Martin talks about how many days is probably one of my favorite comedy scenes, period.

8. Good Morning Vietnam!
I feel like I need to put at least one Robin Williams film up here, and it came down to GMV and Mrs Doubtfire, and GMV has an edited tape of Nixon talking about his balls. It doesn't have James Bond being hit in the head by a fruit, but not everything can be as perfect as Ghostbusters and The Big Lebowski.

9. Groundhog Day
Ned? Ned Ryerson!?

 :pfff:

10. Liar Liar
I'm not a huge fan of Jim Carrey's comedy (though I think he is a great dramatic actor) but this movie just... well, let's just say that to this day I still grab Air Fresheners and breath in deep before saying "I'm takin' this."

BLAZING SADDLES RULES SPACEBALLS DROOLS*  The c-c-c-c-c-combo POWAH of Richard Pryor + Mel Brooks trumps Mel brooks alone.

I think that the real-world satire gives that movie a pathos and bite that Brooks's other movies lack. It's not just comedy; it's comedy justice.

*(actually Spaceballs is pretty hilarious too).

Holy Grail and Blazing Saddles were the first two movies I bought on DVD.  The Jerk would have been the third if its initial DVD release hadn't been terrible.  (Instead the third was Rocky Horror.  Which, while I don't know if it'd go in my top ten comedies, is certainly a movie I have watched a shitload of times.  Fourth was Spinal Tap.)

I love Big Lebowski but would probably tip O Brother as the best Coen Brothers movie.

Blues Brothers is an all-time classic.  Office Space is up there.  So's Vacation.  Clerks still holds up.  Army of Darkness is great.  So's Batman '66.

I have a hard enough time to try to come up with favorite movies at all, so at the moment ten is a bit out of my reach, but I'll just mention Dr Strangelove, The Great Dictator, and Modern Times for now.

Oh, and, Astérix et Cléopâtre, the 1968 animated one, not the 2002 live action one. The latter is good but I dunno if it's top ten good. And Le Dîner de Cons! (Not that those mean much to most of you I'll wager, heh.)

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead:
Absurdism is my favorite genre and this movie is why I know that. It's also the reason I used to actually care about language and play questions all the time.

The Big Hit:
I love anything where Mark Wahlberg plays a character exactly like I choose to believe he is in real life, constantly adorably confused. "Bust some caps! Give the man a gold star."

200 Cigarettes:
How To Woo Ladies

The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain:
This would probably be my favorite romance movie if True Romance and Princess Bride weren't such hot competition. How many people are having orgasms right now?

Snatch:
My favorite Guy Ritchie if only because I had already seen it three times before getting a chance to see Lock Stock. I can't even explain anything specific that makes me love it, but I probably repeat upwards of ten phrases from it on a daily basis completely unconsciously.

Other stuff probably. A lot of really stupid things that make me laugh more than they should.

Airplane is a long favorite of mine, as is Hot Shots/Hot Shots Part Deux.

Definitely echoing Blues Bros, Dr. Strangelove and Chaplain.

Comedies have something of a shorter shelf-life than most movie types, so I think one of the marks of a truly great comedy is replay value.

A personal favourite I will also add is Slap Shot. I love that the movie could have been just this really stupid shitty low-budget SPORTS COMEDY but instead it has fantastic characters and amazing acting which manage to give it enough poignancy and realism to make it a great story as well as a hilarious comedy.

Some others: A Fish Called Wanda is pretty goddamned nutso, with really great performances and dialogue. Young Frankenstein is probably my #2 as far as Mel Brooks goes. Planes, Trains, & Automobiles puts John Candy together with Steve Martin while both are at the top of their game or close to it. Caddyshack used the "ENSEMBLE CAST = CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME" strategy better than most movies.

Also, would you guys count The Princess Bride as a comedy? If so, it's definitely up there.

Big Trouble in Little China.

It's tied with The Princess Bride as my favorite movie of all time.

I could watch Sneakers over and over again.  It's not really a comedy, but it's light-hearted even as it's dealing with really heavy shit, and the playful atmosphere of it just makes the whole thing really fun to watch.  It's very funny.

I like Best In Show best out of that crowd of movies - yes, even better than Spinal Tap - if only because I have an aunt and uncle who are into dog shows and that is so intensely true.

It's got Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn and Billy Crystal in it. If you weren't going to suggest it, I would have.

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my all time favorites. I don't think there's an actual joke in the whole thing, but it's hilarious regardless. I actually prefer it over Rushmore.

So have you guys skipped mentioning "Princess Bride" because it's too obvious to mention?

EDIT:
Apparently while there are three unique mentions of "Princess Bride", "Pincess Bride" is not so popular. Well, that's a mystery solved.

Three unique mentions before your post. What is ctrl+F Princess Bride.
