I get the feeling that the middle class up in Alaska still favors hockey over soccer.

Because if you kick a soccer ball in Alaska, it'll skid right across the ice and end up hitting Putin in the eye.

Yes, exactly.  Football, basketball, and baseball would be better comparisons, except they're not usually used as adjectives for "mom".

Anecdotally, I know a lower-class family that spent a whole lot of money on hockey equipment for their son through his school years.

I really doubt they play much football and baseball up there either.  Basketball, yeah, probably.

I was speaking more of the middle class in America in general, but I'm willing to bet there's a fair amount of football and baseball in Alaska too.

I've seen that idea floated a few other places, and honestly it's probably the best shot McCain has -- as far as things he can control.  Another bin Laden tape released right before the election, or a credible threat of another possible attack, would have a stronger impact on McCain's numbers, but I don't think we have anybody here who's enough of a conspiracy nut to claim those are things McCain has any control over.

But yeah, it's tricky, and transparent.  I don't think it would be a good idea for him to do it before the debate; I'd say the week before the election would have the better impact.  Make it look like he's chastened and resigned to losing and legitimately regretful of the mistakes he's made.

Also unless he does it that near the election no one will remember it.

The election is in three weeks.  The American public's attention span is short, but I think it's a stretch to say it's THAT short.  And of course McCain's strategy IN those three weeks would be to constantly remind people.

The best way to burst the bubble is for this prediction to start making the rounds in the MSM -- if, say, Olbermann starts predicting this is exactly what McCain is going to do, then that's going to make him seem a lot less sincere right off the bat if he does.

"We have 22 days to go. We're 6 points down. The national media has written us off. Senator Obama is measuring the drapes, and planning with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid to raise taxes, increase spending, take away your right to vote by secret ballot in labor elections, and concede defeat in Iraq. But they forgot to let you decide. My friends, we've got them just where we want them."

I was going to go with a Black Knight joke, but now I'm thinking Sir Robin's "Would it help to confuse it if we run away more?" is the better comparison.

I'm the underdog in this race.... I'm behind. I've got to catch up and get ahead. And I expect to do that about 48 hours before the general election.

Of course, my biggest question here is whether he's talking out his ass or if he actually has something specific in mind.

McCain is like a beloved caricature to me at this point.

Also: Public Execution of Osama Bin Laden, Republicans win in a landslide.

Okay, can someone tell me what the fuck this ACORN shit is about? From what I can tell, they bullied poor black voters into registering to vote 27 times and that caused the economy to collapse or something.

:serious: This should clear everything up for you.

Quote
At the direction of unrepentant terrorist Bill Acorn, Buddhist Democratic candidate Barack O'Leary, who is not eligible to run for President on account of the fact that his birth certificate says he was born in Europe, instructed a voter registration group known as Filbert to conspire with the Iraqi government to give risky loans to black people, which has caused the nihilistic practice of the U.S. government bailing out Walmart, which is especially bad when you consider the fact that Tony Rezko, who is currently in prison for letting gay men and women get married in Kenya, is trying to force them to unionize, a practice that maverick Sarah Palin said "No, thank you" to as mayor of Alabama when she wasn't steadfastly monitoring whether or not Vladimir Preston was or was not rearing his head out from Mexico, which we need to build a wall around, because the mostest importantest thing to the U.S. Americans is who is going to pick our orange juice for $50 an hour, which we can't do on account of the fact that Raila Odinga wants to tax not just the RICH, but the Sexual Education Class for kindergartners, which is why YOU MUST VOTE for What's-His-Name, who ABSOULTELY AND COMPLETELY has a plan to catch Harry Pelosi, and whom Republicans only nominated because the rest of their candidates were total ball-sacks.

Lots of words
That sums it up quite nicely, but who is Sarah Palin?  I know Barack O'leary, and the rest, but I don't recall ever seeing that name before.  And is she a pre or post Sigma Maverick?
