It bears repeating: I always had my issues with the old John McCain, but I respected him; this campaign has just been something of a tragic fall.  I'd thought of the Macbeth analogy well before Colbert mentioned it on his show the other day (though he gets points for working in Sarah Palin's witch-obsessed pastor).

I hear he's working on getting his last name changed to "Sixpack".

(Not like there isn't a family history of making thoughtless, unbelievable offensive attempts at humor, of course.)

Sixpack, the most coveted of all voter blocks.

Latest talking point from McCain/Palin seems to be calling attention to Obama knowing Ayers.

(Aside: it always bemuses me how fundamentalist Christians seem only to believe in redemption when it comes to Republicans' marital infidelity.)

The AP has called Palin out for the racial overtones in the "Obama pals around with terrorists and doesn't see America the same way we do" rhetoric.  As I've said, so far the McCain camp's smears have either backfired or just been rendered ineffective by the financial crisis; I expect that to continue.  The smear strategy worked in '04, but I don't think it'll work this time.  Especially as it gets ludicrously desperate -- going after Obama/Ayers is grasping at straws; going after McCain/Keating is pretty damn relevant.

Y'know, if Palin wants to keep bringing up Ayers, that seems to be an invitation to talk Alaska Secessionism.  That ... doesn't seem like a fight she'd win.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

Make-Believe Maverick.

The contents of this might be old news to some, and a lot of it I'd heard about before, but really I thought it was just a fascinating read.  Really just laying out McCain's entire political history.  It's ... god damn.

McCain's frequently inappropriate humor has also led many to question his self-control. In 1998, the senator told a joke about President Clinton's teenage daughter at a GOP fundraiser. "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?" McCain asked. "Because her father is Janet Reno!"

ok, that's a good one.

I disagree -- Reno can take it, but Chelsea was still a teenager.

That said, even assuming it WERE funny, I think comedy is situational -- it's funny when Brent makes a "bomb bomb Iran" joke, but if he said it while running for President, it wouldn't be so much funny as terrifying.

Don't remember if this has been posted or not, but: NYT: the Maverick family is offended by the McCain campaign's use of its eponym.

Quote
Considering the family’s long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, “is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.”

“It’s just incredible — the nerve! — to suggest that he’s not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, ‘Oh, my God, he said it again.’ ”

“He’s a Republican,” she said. “He’s branded.”

I disagree too because Chelsea's gotten a lot more attractive.

Philadelphia Flyers host Palin at Rangers game.

Crowd responds accordingly:

Fox News calls it a 'Mixed Reaction', admits that Palin used her daughter as a human shield.

 Rangers win, 4-3. The Palin Curse is born.

Great quote from a related article:

Quote
I’d also point out that “hockey mom” does not exactly go hand in hand with “struggling middle class family”.  Hockey is a very, very expensive sport for your children to be involved with.  Lots of pricey equipment and travel involved.  It’s not like you throw a soccer ball on a field and let the kids have at it for two hours.  There aren’t a hell of a lot of people who identify with hockey moms.

I get the feeling that the middle class up in Alaska still favors hockey over soccer.
