Was already ranting about this on twitter, but...

The answer is "Extremely, incredibly, outrageously goddamn safe, you fearmongering assholes. Get the fuck out."

Yes, people will be wondering if they're safe. Irrationally, but sure. So you lead with "HOLY SHIT YOU ARE SO SAFE YOU HAVE NO IDEA." Not "Wondering if you're going to die? Maybe you should be! Stay tuned and maybe we'll tell you!" Just... fuck you, ABC. And pretty much the entire rest of the news media, for that matter. Except you, The Atlantic. Good job.

And of course some of the more assholeish parts of the right are already preemptively flipping out at Obama. You know, before he's actually blamed them or said... well, anything. Way to sound like a guilty child.

Except you, The Atlantic. Good job.

All those Schneier links the Atlantic article contains are some good reading.

Stross has a good friendly reminder that the twenty-first century news media is an addictive depressant and it's going to be a very long time before we have any real concrete news on this.

And Patrick at Popehat reminds us how thoroughly, disastrously, offensively wrong the FBI and news media got it after the Olympic bombing.

When they DO name a suspect, we owe him (and I'm very comfortable using male pronouns) the benefit of the doubt.  I'm confident the truth will come out eventually -- but it may take awhile and we should wait for proof before we go destroying any more lives.

Stood with several hundred people as a human wall between the Westboro Baptist Church trash and the funeral. Thankfully, they never showed (which is apparently not uncommon).

My badge of honor is an enormous sunburn from what was inexplicably the clearest, hottest, sunniest day of the year so far.

Uh, some asshole is shooting up MIT right now and has already killed a cop, might not be related, but they're not ruling it out yet.

Fucking hell.

I've been following the police scanners with that for hours.

From what I can piece together right now (this may change)

Two suspects attempted a robbery at a gas station
Cop responded much quicker than expected
Shootout, cop dead, carjacking
Police chase with the two suspects, who are shown to have way, way more explosives than robbers normally do
Suspects are confirmed via police to be the Marathon bombers
In a shootout, one is killed, the other is on the loose
Right now, they're waiting for "daylight", and have a perimeter.

To add to this and how surreal it is for anyone just coming in..

The officer responding to the carjacking gave the victims description of the hijackers on the scanner, it roughly fit the marathon bombers description. This is when alot of goons started scratching their chins and saying "No.. couldn't be"

The victim of the carjacking said they were both armed and were heading for New York.

The officers that were in pursuit of the stolen Mercedes were in almost constant radio contact. They began to report that they were taking fire. There was alot of chatter and then an officer absolutely losing his mind because they were lobbing grenades. This was pretty much out of nowhere and a shit has hit the fan moment for everyone.

The officer began screaming for long guns.

The most surreal thing so far though is that earlier on before all of this an officer who was investigating either the 7-11 robbery or the shooting of the officer was being shown a picture of the guy that did it but either 7-11 or campus security (It's been a long night, details are fuzzy) wouldn't let him have the picture. He told his Lieutenant and the Lieutenant dropped the most deadpan
"That's just amazing" I have ever heard.

CNN is already calling that they're Islamic Terrorists. Fuck's sake.

Anyway, at the very least it's been more or less confirmed that they're from the Chechen area.

ALSO: The one who is still on the loose is a 19-year-old named Dzhokar Tsarnaev. His brother, who was killed, is 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

They've locked down my town while this psycho's on the loose. Hopefully nobody else has to die because of this kid.

Here's a shakey cam video of the shootout that took down the brother:

Since they're white, but Chechen, the press is doing this thing where they're simultaneously trying to paint them as radical Islamic jihadists and good kids who got went bad for some unknown reason. It's like some kind of weird quantum racism.

Ugh. Why do I keep going for that football?
I read the comment where someone decides to defend reddit by saying it's only a discussion site and arguing that shoddy journalism isn't the exclusive purview of the not-journalists at reddit.
