Anonymous. While you're right about the kidnapee, his chances were kind of sunk the moment he was taken by a Mexican drug cartel. I doubt this will hurt his chances of survival, and I'm pretty certain that the cartel will regret it no matter what happens.

The cartel are businessmen, not terrorists.  They can be persuaded to act out of self-interest.

Which is not to say I expect that they will, or that Anon will suddenly collectively ponder the ramifications of its actions.  Fuck this generation too.

Just think about this though. We've reached a place where a gaggle of computer nerds can destroy an entire Latin-American Drug Cartel - which is possibly one of THE most jocko-macho organizations the species is capable of creating. I'm not sure it's entirely without precedent, but it certainly is at at this size. Even the Bletchley Park crew was just "Our nerds totally beat your nerds!"

There's something... important in that. I'm not sure what exactly, and I'm not sure the world will notice if nothing happens, but that's some kind of milestone for the species. I don't know if it's a good one, but it's a milestone all the same.

err, I don't think they're gonna be destroying anything really. Exposing their identities is not really a big deal and I'm sure a lot of their rivals already know which businesses are affiliated with them. So yeah, it may sound impressive but it's probably not that big a deal.

Oh, I agree it may wind up having little impact in practical terms, but all the same I think there's something to it.

Like a Kress Drachenflieger sort of moment. There's a hint here of things to come. Maybe. Maybe I'm just talking outta my ass.

I mostly just took issue with the opening line in your previous post. Sounds like a fox's news headline.

Gonna say the Manhattan Project probably qualifies.

Also, I don't think exposing them is going to really destroy them.  It's usually no big secret who's working with a Latin-American Drug Cartel and who isn't.  Mostly it's going to force a very bloody conflict that affects a lot of people directly who are not Anonymous.

Not saying this is good or bad, just saying, don't be so quick to break out the /b/merica flags.

I don't know what /b/merica is?

I guess if it's the 4chan version of USAPATRIOT4EVER I'd say that Anonymous really isn't American.

Now, if it means 4CHANPATRIOT4EVARZ than that makes sense I guess. Is that actually a thing?

/b/ - Random was the board that birthed Anonymous and the whole idea of Guy Fawkes masks in clean pressed suits to represent them.

Anonymous has layers. At the bottom of people who actually do anything are the DDoS kiddies and shit like that. At the top are eighth circle black sorcerers of the internet who can do, well, practically anything you CAN do using the internet. Not a lot of these guys, mind, but it doesn't actually take that many.

Okay, I knew /b/ was one of the boards and figured (but wasn't sure) that b was related to Anonymous. It's the 'merica' bit I didn't get.

Did they actually subdivide by region at some point, or was Brent just making a 4CHAN, FUCK YEAH joke?

see: the guys who found the child porn tour group on the dark web and exposed all the members and users, including personal info like phone number, home address and photos...

Which is, of course, a huge fucking ethical can of worms.

Ultimately I can't say I have a problem with Anon compromising or shutting down kiddie porn darknets, but posting people's information crosses a pretty serious line.  Sex offender registries are pretty fucking dicey affairs even when operated within full compliance of the law; what we've got here is a case of naming and shaming people who haven't even been proven guilty.  Imagine having a Google search for your name link to pedo allegations for the rest of your life when your only crime was not knowing how to configure your damn router.

(Or, honest to Christ, even if you DID.  Anyone with the savvy to access a Tor darknet can find a way around WPA2.)

Uh did they post the information of a bunch of paranoid mentally-ill people with a compulsion to harm children WITHOUT any prior/after work with local law enforcement to ensure these people were contained and getting proper treatment?

Pretty sure working with law enforcement isn't really Anon's thing.

But yes, good point: I was fixating on "What if they're innocent?", whereas "What if they're guilty?" could have some pretty nasty consequences too.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

But that's always been a problem with Anon's.. work. Someone will get the wrong dox and it just snowballs from there.
