I don't see either of you two knowing anything better than Cura.

Ah, if only Kain had the confidence and wherewithal to speak up!

I don't care who you replace Edge with, but take him out. He's too frail unless he's got a Protect Ring (and he's barely good enough with it), and that means taking it away from either Rosa or Rydia.

I think I swapped him for Cid when I played FF4A.

I just viewed Edge as a vending machine. Insert junk weapon, receive 5000+ damage.

Wait, so Edge's real name is Prince Edward and Prince Edward's real name is Gilbert?

Wait, so Edge's real name is Prince Edward and Prince Edward's real name is Gilbert?

Yep. Edge is a contraction of the first syllables of the guy's full name, and Gilbert was changed to Edward possibly because that piece of trivia escaped the original translators.

By popular demand, the party is... uh, pretty much all the same people except for Disposable Ninja.

A white mage runs in and tells us some stuff's going down at Mt. Ordeals.

But before that, a thing I forgot! Also the hovercraft, which I didn't really forget but it hasn't been useful up to now.

This guy in Adamant Grotto near the village of Mythril really wants an animal tail.

And we picked one up back in the Land of Summons. Brent already classchanged, so it's not like that was its use this time...

In return, we get a hunk of Adamantite. Now who was looking for that?

For your trouble, Kokkol takes the old Sword of Legend and reforges it into Excalibur.

Aw yiss.

One of Kokkol's mooks has a shop where you can buy some nice arrows for Friday and shuriken for D.Ni.

Might as well let Kabbage go see his wife, now that he's recovered from possibly stuffing himself into a cannon barrel.

Actually...

Without Yang in the party, she has some different stuff to say, but... she doesn't give me the Knife! I guess you had to report in for that before going to the moon for the first time.

There was a chance to get the game's ultimate thrown weapon from her, but I missed Kabbage's wife!

Lightning strikes, and a new door opens!

After a small antechamber, the path opens up into the Cave of Trials. Trial of Patience is more like it, it's a too-damn-big cave with enemies that have shown up before (mostly from the caverns in the underground), and goes down for eight levels.

There are a bunch of secret passages, too, each one leading to a single piece of lategame armor for the characters who can rejoin the party now. Romo gets the Red Cap and Red Jacket, MCE gets the Cat's Hood and Sage's Robe, Zara gets the Coronet and Lord's Robe, Kabbage gets the Funny Mask and Corageous Suit, Niku gets the Grand Helm and Grand Armor.

All the interesting stuff is on level 8.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Hmm.

Aha!

Yang's boss is the Storm Dragon...

Who, like the Dark Elf, doesn't care that Tornado is a single-target spell.

But everyone present can hit pretty hard except Friday, who keeps everyone in fighting shape to hit hard.

That's teamwork. Also, why not "God Hand", since that's what it's called in other games? Doesn't Squeenix have a localization editorial guide for this stuff by now?

They had a common dictionary when I was there, but I have no idea how old that is.  Probably not FF4-GBA old.

Gotta go back to Mysidia and get everybody else I guess.

Death Mech has some crazy-powerful magic, including a Flare spell that can oneshot Brent. But it's super-extra-slow, so MCE can keep everyone on their feet between blasts.

That's a dick move, though.

That is a substantial power boost! Thor's Hammer lets Niku cast Blitz when used as an item.

Gigas Worm counters every move with a powerful physical hit. MCE sets everyone up with Protect and Blink while Romo... hides. He's a fast death-of-a-thousand-tiny-cuts sort of fighter, no good at monsters with counterattacks.

Long-range, fire-elemental, and does extra damage to undead. Combined with Romo's speed, he can crank out a steady procession of medium-strength hits.

Master Flan sets up Reflect as soon as the fight starts, then sits back and lets the lesser slimes do their regular damage. Wiping out all the Black Flans and White Mousses just has them regenerate at full strength. So this fight is tailor-made to Zara's weakness, just like Romo's was. Single-target -aga spells will bounce off Master Flan's Reflect, while Zara's one target-all spell (Quake) will wipe out all the Flans and start the battle over.

Zara blasts the lesser Flans one at a time, while everyone else piles the hurt onto Master Flan.

Gives a nice Intelligence bonus and lets Zara cast Flood for free.

Once you cast Float, T-Rex is the easiest fight because he wastes every turn or two casting Earthquake, which Float makes everyone immune to. He responds to Firaga with his own Flame attack, though, so you can't hit the obvious weakness.

Spirit bonus, and casts Esuna for free.

Right. Everyone's equipped, so party reassembled.

Collecting all your ships in one place isn't necessary, but saves you the occasional bit of searching if you forget where you parked the Lunar Whale.

God, finally.

Lyrai learns Thundaga last of the -aga level magics, at level 45. Which is a shame...

Because her next earned summon is a creature of water.

BZOT

EXTRA BZOT

Leviathan is a substantial step up in attack power from the likes of Ifrit and Titan. His Tidal Wave is, of course, water-elemental.

Remember that passage we couldn't go down before?

It's another post-Giant thing.

A throne! What's a throne doing here?

King: I do not need your pity. Although I have been slain by a Lord, I have been given eternal power in return. The summoner that follows you shall be able to call upon me whenever you feel you need my help. Call on my sword, and it shall be yours. However, you must earn my respect by proving your strength and courage. Let us begin the battle!

Odin will count down before using his Zantetsuken attack, which isn't partywide instant death, but hurts so much it might as well be.

But as the book in the library in the Land of Summons said, Odin holds his sword up so high he's a living lightning rod. Wait, if the king just recently died, and just recently turned into Odin, how is there already a book written about him?

Wow. That was fast. He didn't even get to use his signature move.

King: You must protect the world with your strength. I shall fight along with you as Odin.

Zantetsuken attempts to instant-kill every monster in the battle.

Back to the moon! There's this cavern we haven't explored yet, surrounded by a bunch of mountains...

And filled with nasty monsters...

Including some scripted ones you can't flee from. Behemoths are starting to take shape as the counter-happy monsters we know them to be today, but they haven't learned Meteor yet. They just counterattack every hit, regardless of whether it's a physical or magic attack.

And those counters hurt, yo.

It's a long fight, mostly because they're bacon walls and you spend most of it waiting for Friday to get off her lazy ass and cast Curaja, but it gives a lot of money and six-digit experience for winning.

Oh yeah, I brought Romo instead of Kabbage to this dungeon. His ability to damage-cap these monsters isn't why, but it's a nice side effect.

It's a shame there are so many damn Behemoths here. Romo is really bad at counterattack monsters!

I'm starting to suspect that Apollo's Harp has a damage bonus against dragons, too.

Cripes, another one!

Odin isn't a post-Giant thing.  You just have to set foot in the Land of Summoned Monsters, or whatever it's called in this version.  Can get him before you go to the Moon.

Also: can get Excalibur before you go to the Moon.
