Well, guess I'll bring in some of the other folks who got voted down in the polls. And finally change Romo's name. :whoops:

Hooray for shared experience! I don't have to level this party up at all.

The final battle lead-up goes exactly the same, except for a few insignificant dialog changes to account for the different parties on the moon and in the Tower of Miracles.

The battle goes much the same, only with fewer Bio counterattacks on account of me not having Mega Flare at my command. Regular Flare seems to do okay though.

I'd meant to Berserk Romo for this fight, in case he gets hit and has to hide out due to critical HP. It's the bug I mentioned when I recruited this guy back in the beginning of the game, and I didn't know about it until this LP, so why not give it a shot? Unfortunately, Romo took this Flare attack, dropped to critical HP, and ran and hid before MCE could get the spell off.

The twins have excellent magic defense, Romo is hiding, and Niku and Brent have enough HP to take it on the chin. I don't think I had to revive anyone during this fight.

That was surprisingly easy!

There's more insignificant dialog changes in this scene, but the rest of the ending plays out exactly the same.

And after the credits roll...

Of course, now you have to go through that a third time for the ninja's door.  Because nine options and four slots.  Haaawwww.

Sidenote!  You only need one or the other of the twins to kill Zeromus to open the Twins door, so it's possible to do that in two trips through the Subterrane.  Need at least three trips to fully explore the Ruins though.

The FF6 ending music sync is terrible.  Kinda kills Shadow's big dramatic moment when Strago's theme is already cuing up.

I hear the sound restoration patch I'm using fixes it.  But I also hear that it still doesn't sync properly in an emulator.  But that claim is from 2010, so maybe it does now.  Guess there's one way to find out.

(Opera sync was perfect, so I'm hopeful.)

Mars: I cannot bring myself to face you both. Not yet. I must test myself as you did, Brent, at Mt. Ordeals. I will train until I have surpassed my father as a dragoon... When that time comes... ...Then I shall return to Baron.

20 years to do something the last guy did in a day or so is still good, right?

Right?

FuSoYa: You hold much more power than I had expected... The race of the blue planet may have already evolved past us lunarians...
Man, those two half-lunarians and a girl raised and trained in the land of summons on the moon sure are strong. That must be representative of how far Earth has come!

Well, Kain's dad is a dead dragoon, so he's not much help. Cecil's dad just handed him paladinhood with only the smallest of speedbumps. Bloody nepotism.

D.Ni comes along for one last Zeromus fight. But the star here is Romo, whom I berserk straight away. I use the Crystal before Zeromus can shake off the effect.

I remember throwing shuriken as doing more damage.

Meanwhile, a crazy yapping dog exceeds that damage without consuming a useable item. Way to go, D.Ni.

:justasplanned:

Sure enough, Romo runs to hide.

Then pops back out to attack again, despite being at critical HP.

Granted, it would work better in a fight where the enemy can't dispel Berserk status, but even once Black Hole goes off the game still considers Romo hidden. I can't even heal him until he "reappears".

Ah well. The theory's sound.

Big Magic Voice: These are the Lunar Ruins, the forgotten dungeon of old. This dungeon takes your worst doubts and fears and presents them in various floors. You must reach the deepest depths by overcoming tremendous trials. You must conquer each trial and gather nine tomes. Only when the last one is claimed, can you overcome the last trial.

That last part's a lie, as we shall see.

The first several levels are dull-as-dishwater lunar cavern floors, with wildly unbalanced random encounters.

Oh, so Behemoths do counter magic in this game. With Maelstrom rather than Meteor.

Every five floors presents you with a save point, a teleport tile leading out of the dungeon, and a door. But you have to have the appropriate party member present to open said door, and I left Kabbage back at base. No worries, I'll get to it.

No small number of floors are "Floors of Remembrance", which mimic the layout of other dungeons. This is one of the Lunar Paths on the surface of the moon.

And the Chocobo Village north of Troia.

White Chocobos still roam here, restoring party MP for a quick Curaja-fest, but yellows and blacks are absent for what are hopefully obvious reasons.

On to... the Antlion nest? This one has a tiny variation: there's a Megalixir on the highest level of the sand pit opposite the exit.

Next trial...

This time the door opens.

Romo: Damcyan Castle!? What is going on?
Offscreen voice: ...Hel...
Romo: ? The voice was coming from somewhere over there...

It's an autobattle. Brent strides forward and kills the monster -- repeatedly. It regenerates each time.

Got it? To end a fight with a spectre, you have to kill it at least once, then have Romo sing at it. That ends the battle.

Now go do that to every spectre you see.

Clearing out the castle reveals a hidden passage, leading to an underground sluice.

It is, of course, filled with more spectres.

A shot from offscreen!

You can equip the Requiem Harp for a small boost in attack power, but like the Blood Sword and Blood Lance, it isn't worth the penalty to base stats anyway. So no big loss.

Huh. Did not see that coming... although that does explain the blanket of snow covering the deserted desert castle.

Lunar Shiva has the vulnerability you'd expect...

But counters by casting Blizzaga on herself to heal back. Since I didn't bring a dedicated black mage in this party, I'll have to settle for just smacking some sense into her.

Yikes. When she changes her pose to the more aggressive stance, she's getting ready to unleash one hell of an Ice Storm. Romo didn't have a prayer.

STOP DOING THAT I JUST REVIVED HIM

Blaze? Isn't that... not-ice?

Well, anyway. When Romo isn't lying facedown in the cold, cold mud, he does have a fire-elemental harp to play at Lunar Shiva. His damage output is actually kind of impressive in that regard.

As a battle reward, we get a Lunar Shiva's Grimoire.

Romo: Although this may not be our world, I've managed to save Damcyan...

The Harmonious Ring changes Romo's Sing command into Chant. While Sing ran out of utility a long time ago -- arguably it never had any to lose -- Chant is a partywide Protect and Shell buff. That's always going to be handy!

After the Trial is over, we're whisked back to the save and exit room. So long as you possess the Grimoire given as a reward for a Trial, you can't go back in. But they're consumable items, so once you use them up you can get another copy by repeating the Trial.

The next level is a library. There are no random encounters here, thankfully, because this old fart has lost a book and you have to find the shelf it's on.

The other scholars give some clues.

There are other books to be found on the shelves, of course.

The location of the book is randomized every time you do this floor, to keep you from beelining to the right shelf every time.

The next level is a puzzle. Once it starts, a bunch of pigs, toads, and small folk will run into a building currently obscured by the text window. Then he asks how many of a given animal ran inside. If you answer correctly, the white chocobo gives you a Megalixir.

The level after that is a Legend of Zelda-style faerie spring. But given that there's a place to use a Cottage every five levels, all this healing up isn't really necessary. I mean, I'm glad it's not another plain ol' regular dungeon level with random encounters every four steps, but still.

:whoops:

A teleporter maze. Yeah, really regretting the snark about the faerie spring now.

The next level is a bunch of rooms connected by hidden passages, but it's easy to tell where they are because there are scripted monster fights in the middle of each one.

There's even a town level that looks a bit like village Mythril. The item shop is the same as Hummingway Cavern's, the armor shop the same as the Land of Summons, and the weapon shop sells shuriken and arrows like Kokkol's assistant.
