...that's the closest I've ever seen anyone in power get to figuring out what the hell the win condition for the war is.

Also, whoever coined the slogan "Obama/Biden: One House, one spouse" is a fucking genius.

Oh.  Huh.  I'm not sure I follow, then.

edit: Which is to say, what did the supreme court consider a militia?

Last month they deemed the DC handgun ban unconstitutional.  Scalia's argument was that people need to be allowed to own handguns so they can train in their use, JUST IN CASE they later decide to join a militia to defend themselves against an overreaching government.

Going Col. Jessep on McCain & Bush

Hews too close to Clinton's "Bush fucked up, I didn't" excuse for my taste.  And I still think that threatening to cut off the funds was the only thing the Democrats could have done that would have had any teeth.  That said, he's forceful, he's articulate, and he's got an actual plan.  He's a little long-winded, but it's mostly good stuff.

Obama's remarks on Biden.  Let me know when the video's up; they're good in text but I expect they're better spoken.

They were, as the crowd reactions and reflective pauses made all the difference. Photos.

TinyURL is acting wonky today, so here's the linked Education video:

Seventy billion?  Assuming he means that literally and not as just a random big number, I like this guy.

The story of his father at the end is good for appealing to the blue-collar voters I keep hearing about.  Obama and Biden are self-made men who overcame adversity to accomplish what they have.  McCain certainly had his share of adversity, but he's not a self-made man; he married rich and now he doesn't know how many houses he owns.

Biden presents the image that he's plain-spoken, working-class -- one of us.  Better so than Obama or McCain.  So I can reasonably assume that's the first thing the Republicans are going to try and destroy.

More to the point, he contrasts the "war-hero" image pretty well with his "everyday hero" schtick.  Doesn't block it as an instant escape route, but it hella helps.

All right, before this becomes a Joe Biden circle jerk bukkake fest, someone tell me what can go wrong here.  What are the cons of this decision?

(And yes, I am increasingly relying on this community to do my research for me.  It's faster and less irritating than trying to use the rest of the Internet or other mass media.)

Biden is a loudmouth braggart (which could signal he's from the future). His comments drive him into trouble, and he internalizes these gaffes instead of allowing them to wash off. Still, from his plagiarism to even his 'Indian accent' quote, his foibles are small, and even acceptable in context.

Delaware is no swing state, but his Catholic upbringing may help in his home state of Pennsylvania. While a portion of the 18 million Clinton voters may feel indignant for being passed over, Biden's pick is for independent voters.

There are only four senior members above him in the Senate, but forty-four who are actually older. Still, he would be even older than McCain is now if he runs for President after two Obama terms.

Here's to the Obama campaign giving Biden plenty of press. Edwards was all but hidden away a week after being selected for veep, and in these national campaigns you need all the help you can get.

He seems to have stolen all the best, useable, call-it-as-it-is parts of our Old Friend's criticisms of the war (We're the ones creating terrorists, etc). It's like getting all the sensible bits without the ninety tons of BATSHIT INSANITY baggage.

Time will tell if he finds some HAHA OOPS of his own, but I sure like him so far.

It's okay.  I miss the link for the next page sometimes too.

...Anyway.  Guess now we're down to speculating on McCain's running-mate.

I think my cache was fucked up or something? because I clicked the last page link, and the previous page is where i ended up. ha ha, whoops.

As Arc said, there are the gaffes.  About the only thing he received media coverage for during the primary season was referring to Obama as "clean" and "articulate".

And as I said earlier, he has a tendency to be long-winded, and he seems to have Clinton's weakness of saying the Bush Administration mishandled the Iraq war instead of saying it was a fucking mistake to go there in the first place.

Plus, while most people will see his experience as a good thing, he's not a good symbol for change.  He's a Washington insider, he's made compromises, and some of those are bound to be unacceptable to some people.  His record on choice is too moderate for my tastes -- that might swing some Catholics, but I wouldn't count on it.

I still think he was probably the best choice out of the entire field, though.

More on the "What are Biden's negatives?" question, via GP: he's good buddies with the RIAA and MPAA and a big champion of the DMCA.

...Can somebody find the Daily Show bit about Fox News's use of question marks?

Meanwhile, via Tiny Revolution: Biden was repeating the "everybody thought Saddam had WMD's" bullshit as recently as last year.
