Yeah.  Keep a close eye on Putin.  He's just a hop, skip, and a jump across the vast Bering Sea.

Not to defend Palin, but honestly, if there was anywhere to watch Russia from...

We actually have a pretty substantial chunk of our air force up there. As I understand it, Russians like to toy with our borders, and there's actually a lot of small towns and villages near the bering strait that are composed almost entirely of russians; Russia is a pretty big issue for Alaskans.

Having said that, it still does not qualify her to be vice president or be involved in foreign policy decisions at all. The general Alaskan feelings towards Russia are pretty similair to those people who offered to spend their own time and money helping to build a wall around the mexican border. I don't like the idea of our vice president going to a meeting with Putin and calling him a 'filthy red bastard' or referring to him as 'Ruskie', given that our relations with russia are bad enough lately as is.

The rhetoric that's being used suggests to me that you could hop on someone's shoulders, stand on the western coast of Alaska, look right across the ocean (and the vast wasteland of Siberia), and count the change in Putin's back pocket.

There is no way that Alaska is any better at watching Moscow than Washington, D.C. is.  That excuse for a "foreign policy experience" argument is the world's largest crock.  It'd be like saying that the governor of Maine has a better idea of what's going on in Britain.

This is a little closer to the truth.

If it was someone who had been governer of Alaska for ten or twenty years, it might be a valid argument, especially since Russia has been making waves lately. Someone who understands Russia might be better equipped to handle Russian aggression or Russian foreign policy decisions. but the turth is, Palin has been in charge for a whole of two years. She's not equipped to govern ALASKA yet, let alone worry about her neighbors, which both happen to be foreign countries. The claim itself, that an Alaskan knows Russia better than an american from any other state is not terribly absurd. The claim that an Alaskan politician with virtually no experience knows Russia from a political standpoint after two years of mediocre governance, on the other hand, is.

Right.  I'd say Napolitano's got a much firmer grasp of what's up in Mexico than Palin does of what's up in Russia.

Of course, I'd say Napolitano's got a much firmer grasp of everything than Palin does of anything.

LA Times on Palin's crazy-fringe beliefs regarding science.

Quote
Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago -- about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct -- the teacher said.

[...]

Palin told him that "dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time," Munger said. When he asked her about prehistoric fossils and tracks dating back millions of years, Palin said "she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the tracks," recalled Munger, who teaches music at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and has regularly criticized Palin in recent years on his liberal political blog, called Progressive Alaska.

[...]

"It's legitimate to ask questions about candidates who come from a fundamentalist environment with a black-and-white worldview, and want to know how it would affect their approach on all kinds of issues," said Paul S. Boyer, a retired University of Wisconsin history professor who has written about the role of religious prophecy on public policy.

I'd like to see more coverage on this -- the video of Palin's pastor praying for protection from witchcraft is pretty damning.

As the article points out, she's savvy enough not to state the craziest of her beliefs when cameras are rolling, so I don't expect her to blurt out anything about dinosaurs during Thursday's debate.

That said, I really don't think there will be any SHORTAGE of embarrassing things she says there or any time she's on TV between now and November.

Well, if McCain won that would be why. The thing is, the economy is really really helping Obama right now. Most Americans don't really understand what's going on, but they've heard Obama is better with the economy and McCain is better with the war. This actually gives Obama a major in with the culture of fear that pervades in the mind of the average conservative voter.

Better yet, Palin ended up paying for the fucking thing with a 25 percent increase in the city sales tax.

...Why is this the first time I've heard of this?

Because, you know, a headline like

REPUBLICAN VICE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE SARAH PALIN RAISED TAXES BY 25%

Might get some people's attention.

I enjoyed reading that Palin piece on Alternet, because it seems to have been written without any knowledge or idea that Palin's standing in polls had tanked before the economic crisis took full swing, and still attacks the presidential debate as though Obama is running against Palin, instead of McCain, this season.

Palin may excite the extremist right, but she's losing against everyone else.  And at the end of the day, as Americans hear more and more about the failings of our economy, all those things about big spending, and raising taxes, and leaving Wasilla in financial ruin come to light and have a negative impact on her and McCain.  This is reflected in most polls, which are showing significant gains by Obama.  Every single poll should be taken with a grain of salt, as there's no way they can predict how people will feel on November 4th.  But my persona favorite polling site, FiveThirtyEight.com has Obama winning the electorate with 85.4%, and the popular vote by 51.4%.

So really, Palin has become an albatross to McCain who isn't really doing so hot by himself anyway.
