Rather than flying around the world map, you can now fly directly to the Floating Continent, wherever it may be.

But there's some stuff to do first, of course.

Back in Thamasa, there's some background exposition.

Gungho: I come back here for the first time in ages, and the place looks like it's been through a war! What in the world happened?
Strago: G-Gungho!?
Gungho: Oh, Strago! Have you come back to hunt Hidon? You haven't changed a bit, have you? Back when you were young, you tried so hard to hunt down Hidon... but then you gave up and quit before you found him.
Strago: I didn't quit! It's just... I sort of... I mean... The thing lives in Ebot's Rock, and after the place sunk, well...
Gungho: Always have to make excuses, don't you? You're pathetic!

Oh btw Intangir has started showing up on the Veldt because you just have to encounter a monster to make it appear there. Killing the monster isn't necessary, which is good! Because I'm still not able to do that.

Gau leaps on it, though.

Intangir gives Gau all the elemental absorbs and immunities that the Intangir normally carries. Kid's basically invincible now, except his special skill... it's Transfusion. Transfusion removes the user from battle and gives someone else all his HP and MP.

It's a Lore, too, so now I can have two characters do it. Yay, hooray.

(Cast Silence on Gau, then have him Intangir Rage. He won't use Transfusion and can slowly whittle down the enemy with physical attacks while remaining largely unkillable.)

Roulette is another Lore. It kills a random target, enemy or ally.

So, I'm assembling the party for the Floating Continent. It's a tough dungeon!

Terra has spent most of her recent level-ups with Zona Seeker, giving her the highest Magic stat in the party. She can transform to increase it even more, of course.
Locke can be used to steal some neat stuff while on the Continent, such as Angel Rings, Genji Gloves, and a Ribbon.
Cyan remains slow but strong... although he's been in the party so much for various parts that he knows more spells than most. His Magic stat is still pretty low, though, so he's not a particularly effective mage...
Edgar doesn't care about magic, he's got SPIRAL POWER
Sabin can nail the plentiful monsters on the Floating Continent with fire and holy attacks. He's still the only source of holy-elemental damage I have.
Celes isn't as good at magic as Terra, doesn't know as many spells as Cyan, and has a pretty crummy special ability. She also puts the party at a slight disadvantage later on.
Strago has several Lores to learn on the Floating Continent. I usually take him along when I'm not LPing, because I still like blue mages.
Relm isn't any better on the Floating Continent than she is anywhere else.
Setzer will require a full stock of Echo Screens and careful use of the pause button to align his slots into useful configurations to be much use.
Mog is stuck in mountain terrain for the entire Continent. Jumping will probably remain his best bet.
Gau is still... surprisingly useful! Given how hard he is to manage, I think I have a pretty comprehensive Rage list going. I will grant that having natural access to -ara level magic makes him somewhat less useful, since now anyone can Fira or Blizzara and I don't have to use Templar or Veil Dancer Rages to make that happen. He still has Gigavolt, Cyclonic, Quake, Reraise, and CatScratch, though.

Anyway, poll's goin' up.

There is a special important Celes-only thing on the floater!  You can't not bring Celes!

Celes for the story, Locke for the chance at the loots, and Gau for the WE'RE BEING DIFFERENT.

Music: Mt. Kolts
Yes, this is the typical "mountain dungeon" theme, and it's played a couple of times already. It's just kind of terrible so why link it?
It does happen to be one of the best tracks on Balance and Ruin, though. Real instruments and a little style do a lot to improve it.

It's neat thing that the Floating Continent has the same general shape as the overworld map version...however I think they got the scale off just a little bit....

Did you ever visit Figaro with Edgar + Sabin?

Also didn't Gau have a scene with his father?

Doesn't really change anything, because she's got like 3 votes.

I liked using her because (1) she's adorable, and (2) it was basically the challenge of having having an all-melee/magic character at that point in the game, which, considering I'd beaten the game like six times, seemed like a fun handicap.

Not even a coat. Just a scarf. That's why it's for characters who consider clothing largely optional.

And now for the much-coveted, ballyhooed Figaro scene.

Once Sabin runs off to look around, go take a nap.

Sabin: And yet it's different... Mom and Dad are gone... Nothing can ever really be the same... Not after what happened...

Begin flashback!

Edgar: So... Dad... didn't make it...

High Priestess: Your father just said he would entrust Figaro to the two of you. Those were his... last words.
Sabin: You all make me sick! Everyone's saying that the Empire had Dad poisoned... ...and the only thing any of you can think about is who'll be the next king! No one's even sad! None of you probably cared when Mom died after we were born, either...
High Priestess: That's not--
Sabin: You're just as bad as the rest of them!
Edgar: Sabin...
Sabin: Empire of murderers...! They won't get away with this!

Sabin: Let's forget this crazy kingdom, and live our lives how we want to! You said you didn't want to be a king, right?
Edgar: A life of freedom, huh...? ...What do you think would happen to Figaro if both of us left? There'd be no one to take the throne. Dad was counting on us to take care of the kingdom...

Edgar: If it's heads, you win. Tails, I win. The winner chooses whichever path he wants... no regrets, no hard feelings. Okay?

In a noble sacrifice of his own dreams and ambitions, Edgar is using a double-headed coin. If you bring Edgar to the opera house and he's there for the first meeting with Setzer, Celes will pause and take the coin from Edgar before flipping it to con Setzer into helping. If Sabin is also there, once the deception is revealed, he'll put two and two together and cry "That coin! Brother!"

But that's the end of it.

Sabin: Don't you ever doubt that! I'm sure he's beaming with pride, wherever he is.
Edgar: Ten years...
Sabin: Where has the time gone...?
