This part of the music has long since finished, and the last few scenes play out in silence. This is the gap around 10:57 on the music I linked previously.

As the screen fades, the tower starts shaking. Shadow isn't even trying to escape -- he's come to grips with his past misdeeds, and is willing to lay down and die in penance.

Strago really only has two character hooks: he never found Hidon and he is old. Except I did the sidequest where he found Hidon, leaving exactly one other thing to talk about in his ending.

Strago the game has set you up to be the awesomest mage caster guy, can't you like fly up to the hook or something?

To be fair, seeing a seventy-year-old man repeatedly leap something like five times his body height is still pretty impressive.

As the first movement draws to a close, there's a charmingly old-school "AND YOU!" at the end. But I missed the screenshot trying to line up the prop being onscreen with the text. Rushed again!

Anyway, this begins the second movement of the ending theme. If you stopped the music around the 11:00 mark, start it up again.

Terra, we're... we're on the airship. We're above the collapsing tower. We don't really need to escape anything anymore.

Terra flies away anyway.

So Setzer fires up his big ol' zeppelin and follows her. This totally makes sense, shut up.

*paff*

Okay, so apparently the airship... landed somewhere? Why did I have to grab a hook to leave the dungeon if the Falcon wasn't hovering overhead?

Anyway, the group escapes.

A dive through the clouds!

Everyone's laid flat by Setzer's nosedive.

Celes looks at everyone in turn. Nope, not Terra, not Terra, not Terra...

She was behind you the whole time!

Let's not discount that you somehow maneuvered a dirigible to catch a falling object on deck rather than on the gas balloon.

Anyway, roll credits.

Which are, again, out of sync with the music. This is about the point where the music gives out, despite that there's more ending video to be had. Alas.

"Hey Duane, c'mere, you gotta see this."

I'm a bit curious which of the four-year-olds managed the delivery.

As Duane holds his newborn for the first time...

...some of the kids rush outside to watch the Falcon pass overhead.

Terra waves at them.

Figaro castle: Still There.

As the music reaches a crescendo...

...or would, on the SNES...

...Terra lets her hair down to blow in the wind.

Pff, like that's really the end. I've got postgame content to do! Which isn't really postgame, since I could have gotten to the Dragon's Den bonus dungeon anytime after defeating the eight dragons and earning Crusader. But the equipment inside is better than the stuff in Kefka's tower, so I did Kefka's tower first.

Anyway, first thing is to nip by the Coliseum and trade that Ragnarok sword I swiped during the final battle for another Lightbringer.

Which combined with DOUBLE TERRA and the item duplication that allowed means I have three Lightbringers and two Paladin's Shields. The Celestriads I earned legit while level-grinding, since you can't unequip relics in the middle of battle.

Next up: Dragon's Den! Should I assume Shadow and Cyan are staying behind again?

If you walked back and forth across that square 255 times the plant will have died and the little girl here is crying.

Also her mother is dead.

Also the little girl is Aeris.

But then when you play 7 you can resurrect Aeris by plugging in a SNES controller and inputting the code XABY 50 times and then the Konami code

If done correctly you'll hear a chime and General Leo will become the final boss of the Gold Saucer's Rock Paper Scissors 3D fighter

Who's ready for some POSTGAME BUT NOT REALLY DUNGEON

As covered previously, Gogo and Shadow didn't make it off of Kefka's Tower. They're out of the game.

It's another three-party teamwork dungeon, with some passages arbitrarily blocked off by elemental seals.

And monsters, of course. Lots of monsters. Lots and lots of monsters. Monsters every few steps. Monsters with really annoying gimmicks and counterattacks. So many monsters! So. Many. Fucking. Monsters.

And here I am with two parties who can't equip Molulu's Charm.

As you might expect from a dungeon called the Dragon's Den, there's a dragon blocking the path forward. Just chillin'.

Ice Dragon is back! In Pog form! Ice Dragon looks like one of the Vector Lythos enemies back in Kefka's Tower, so now he steals their strategy: he splits into four targets, with each sprite sitting on top of the other so it's impossible to tell who any single-target spells are hitting. If you hit the wrong target, they counterattack with physical hits or Avalanche.

Cyan casts Quick on himself.

Quick gives the user two turns in a row. And importantly for Cyan, it stops time for everyone else while the caster does his thing. That means Cyan has all the time in the world to charge up his Bushido skills. Twice.

I stick with Eclipse for this fight since it targets all enemies, but there's no reason not to abuse Quick/Flurry or Quick/Oblivion later.

Well, except that for all I've played I've never gotten Oblivion to hit a single enemy even once, but Flurry! Flurry is four hits that ignore the target's defense. That's a good one.

Ice Dragon's counters are nothing to worry about, so I mop the floor with him pretty easily.

And earn what would be an ultimate weapon for Setzer, except he already has Fixed Dice and I don't care.

Some of those arbitrarily blocked paths are open!

I find the next dragon hanging out in the Phoenix Cave-like area... but there's no way to reach him. Time for teamwork!

It's worth noting that while I've played Final Fantasy 6 an embarrassing number of times on the SNES, I've only played the Advance version through once. So I'm getting through this dungeon mostly blind, through the sort of raw experimentation the developers expected.

So the last two screenshots involve about an hour's play time of arranging and rearranging the party on switches that create stepping stones out of the lava. Since the stepping stones that each switch creates are never within line-of-sight of the switch itself, just figuring out what I've accomplished became an ordeal.

Anyway, the next dragon is the Storm Dragon redux. Once he's taken some damage, he cloaks himself in wind to bring his speed and evasion up. But uh... I leveled with Cactuar and have a bunch of attacks that never miss, so...

Right.

It's a lance for Edgar, the one person who can equip Lightbringer but doesn't have one. So that's... kinda nice?

Gross!

O... kay...

Red isn't the immediate problem, though.

Blue is. Blue Dragon mk.II is almost exactly the same as Blue Dragon the first. Only instead of using Slow on itself and Rippler on anyone with Haste, it drops Poison/Slow/Blind on itself and Ripplers those onto anyone with Haste, Protect, or Shell. Since I have two people in Miracle Shoes, that's all the prompting he needs.

Relm, this is why Sketch sucks and I hate you.

Oh well. Like most Johnnys against a team of Timmys, he loses horribly. Alas, poor Blue Dragon.

A sword for Celes that's not as good as the Lightbringer she's holding. Next!

You make it sound like somebody's going to have a baby.

Yep, this shit again too.

Eventually I remember that I have a party with Mog and Molulu's Charm, so I let Edgar's group to the bulk of the exploring from here on out. If I feel the need to switch people between parties, I can do that without leaving the dungeon.

Earth Dragon starts the battle with 50Gs, Magnitude8, and Quake all in a row. He's no longer immune to earth-elemental attacks like he was in the Opera House -- he absorbs them instead. That makes sense!

I flattened him so quickly he didn't even have a chance to use his new gimmick.

Better in raw attack power than the Tigerfangs, but the Tigerfangs give a bonus to Sabin's magic that the Godhand doesn't. If I hadn't artificially pumped Sabin's magic up to absurd levels already that would be something of a dealbreaker.

Red Dragon starts his new gimmick as soon as the fight begins. He's invincible! And every time he attacks he wears down his own HP.

He has instant-kill claw attacks, his usual Flare Star and Firaga, Meltdown, and... Ultima.

And just in case you try to circumvent the Ultima partywipe by casting Reraise, he follows with Flare.

...and then dies.

A sword for Terra that also isn't Lightbringer.
