I was on my brother's server, and we made a line of bonefines through a mountain on a deserted frozen moon, until suddenly we happened upon a thriving village of birdpeople. As I was speaking with their merchant, my brother ran in with a sword and massacred everyone. I quickly took the opportunity to mine out the house closest to me, to the ground, and return home to my planet, to rebuild the house exactly, but over my spawn point dirt pit home.

I dunno if I'm surprised or disappointed that the pick seems to become the omni-tool in this game.

I use a hoe almost never, and the axe is basically irrelevant to all construction concerns after I have a thousand blocks of unrefined wood.

Yeah, there should really be at least an upgrade to the omni-tool.

I don't even care if it functions exactly the same, I just want something less anachronistic than a mining pick.

Yeah, same. I really like the look and style of the omnitool, too.

Why do I have to make picks. Just let me craft upgrades that go into a "socketed" tool. Like I have to craft the mining pick then put it inside the tool.

Same with axes, I guess?

Really the fact that this is supposed to be sci-fi futuristic stuff and I'm making shit with an anvil is just crazy on its own. I have a fucking space ship with a replicator in it, surely they can dress the rest of the stuff up to be more than iron age stuff.

Actually, provided I can figure out how to actually do it, I figured out a theoretical modable solution:

Nano former + material(copper) = copper enhanced nano former. 2x2 mining tool with the speed of the tier of pick/tool.

Next step would upgrade like mining picks. (Copper enhanced nano former + iron = iron enhanced nano former.)

To keep mining picks relevant, keep the speed and range, but make them 4x4 block removal - making character height tunnels for less tiresome tunneling.

Edit the scripts and art assets in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\assets\items\tools\.

Add recipes to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\assets\recipes\starter\anvil\ i think. you may also need to edit C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\assets\player.config for them to appear initially.

assets\items\tools has a tool called "laser miner" that appears to have no recipe, you might want to add that to the starting list and test.

dress the rest of the stuff up to be more than iron age stuff.

This would be my complaint if I hadn't been stuck on the lowest tier shit for the entirety of my playtime (I'm not supposed to make the completely random not-at-all-guaranteed to be useful planet my home base? I should search the local starsystem for resources? Quaaa?) where I'm pretty OK that shit is distressingly iron-age.

... It is kinda pet-peev-y that soft metals like gold and silver make for better picks.

...Well okay less work I have to do then.

Can't say I agree with the tool being 3x3 though. Mining picks shouldn't be 100% obsolete.

I would like to keep playing this but knowing there is a player wipe in the next few days really kills any incentive.

Very much agreed. Current mission is to scout and catalogue useful planets for future speeding through nonsense.

Additionally, the fact we're in early beta is what is keeping me from building mega structures or feats of engineering. The potential/promise of character loss keeps me cheating to overcome poorly planned progression hurdles.

Did I mention I don't trust this game to start being secure any time in the near future?

I can tolerate it in MineCraft/Terraria because those are fantastical settings, no?
I demand all of my sci-fi magic be done by good, old-fashioned magical science.
