I read somewhere that it was a pastiche, just like the song that was playing. I don't remember the actual source though, nor am I a follower of Yes.

Tonight's episode:
Well played, Bowie. Well, played. Also: SOUSAPHONE
Man, what the hell was
that first album?  I've been googling for a while without luck.
It's definitely Yes, if that helps narrow it down.  (Assuming you didn't catch the gag in the dialogue.  And don't recognize Yes's logo.)

Stand corrected.  Coulda sworn I saw the Yes logo on there, but I admit it flashes by pretty fast and I didn't go back to confirm.

The ending felt just right for all that, too.

It's in halves.  Production was running a bit long, so it will continue in 2010.

And we get a net gain of episodes.  Two 8-ep half seasons as opposed to one 13 strong season.  So a break is .. acceptable.

I'm also, oddly enough, the first person to mention
Memento
.  That's pretty much the exact structure this ep had:
two interwoven narratives moving in opposite directions
.
On Memento: I was pretty sure the whole movie plays out in short clips played in reverse order, as if the movie had been chopped into three minute chunks and then the first chunk became the last. In fact, I thought somebody rearranged the movie so the climax happens in the first scene or two. I misremember/wasn't paying attention. Farts.
there are two narratives in memento.  the color one moves backwards, the black-and-white one moves forwards.

Really? They wrap up the season like THAT?  FUCK.  I at least wanted to see that last part play out.

The ending felt just right for all that, too.

This has really been the "Hank and Dean grow up" season.  They've developed slowly from one-dimensional characters into very interesting and distinct roles.

It's interesting how the series has developed over the years, too; I felt back in season 1 that the show dragged every time Brock was offscreen, but he's been gone for nearly all of this season so far and I didn't miss him.  The rest of the cast has really stepped up.

And now that it's all established, it's time to shake things up again.  That episode didn't restore status quo; things are going to be different now.
Hank's gotten by this long without Brock and he's really manned up and ratcheted up his rebellious streak; he may be overjoyed to have him back for the moment, but they're going to lock horns.
Also, the fight-and-then-teamup sequence was simply brilliant.

First episode of the new half-season was on last night, and I remember nothing about the way the last half-season ended. If you missed it, you'll probably be able to catch it on Adult Swim for the next couple days.

I dunno if the break was too long so I fell out of the show's rhythms, or what, but the episode didn't wow me. It was nice to see Billy and Pete coming up in the world, and there was some good repartee between 24 and Dr Mrs The Monarch. Looking forward to next week, though.
