The Mayor: The Game
« on: June 07, 2008, 06:46:29 PM »

Our hand has been forced.

We can top... That. In our own way, maybe not in the flashy eroge presentation way.

I'll understand if you will want to take a baseball bat to my skull for suggesting such a thing, but I think after so many years of our brainstorming, our writing, and our independent designing, it is time to pool resources and create a videogame.

Based on The Mayor.

As a spoof of JRPG's.

In episodic content.

I'm not promising big fat McMoney bucks, although I imagine a sponsor or two could be pulled in. However, I sense loads of raw talent in design, penmanship, and other venues here that are going untapped.

It would not only give The Mayor another lease on life, but also a clearer purpose, and possibly encompass more of our membership. The thought of a brash character, The Mayor (of the InterWeb), swinging in and out of brash adventures is a teasing image. JRPG's are known around here like the backs of our heads, and could employ plenty of terse writing, nonsensical items, and skillful self-insertion*. Episodic in nature, so that a short runtime can be justified, and new ideas can be implemented later.

Going for an amateur presentation angle could be apart of the appeal, with economical traits and every play in the book being used. Complete with "buggy" levels, meme monsters that need slaying, and catchphrases that will never catch on.

An episode zero, once constructed, could prove to our team if this is a feasible enough plan, if it needs reworking, or if best to never to hit episode one.

... That's my take. I'm 100% sympathetic to scheduling conflicts, disinterest, or just untrusting of me once again storming up another Project of Annoyance. It has just been screaming out to me as the more direct purpose of this community than even Snarky Website Hipsters. Could be wrong. This community may not have a purpose at all, but that obviously isn't stopping me from poking it with a stick to find out.

So, tell us your strengths, your concerns, your ideas, and your angles. Best to know if this is a worthwhile usage of our time, or complete drivel right out the gate. Best case scenario, a better method of attack, mode of play, or all-around superior idea comes to light. Worse case scenario: Bees.

I think at least two of us here are making JRPGs of their own already.

...the problem is going to be pulling them off their own ideas to work on yours.

:doit: Ours. Ours.

Kayin is working on his Metroidvania fighter (which I fully intend to provide services for), and Kazz is creating Pod, and... I'm out of the loop with everyone else.

I think Kazz abandoned Pod.  I was referring to myself with The Plot-Branching Game.

Hey, The Mayor can have branching! I mean, we are a room full of monkeys at a typewriter. And what is the most important aspect of a good Mayor? Outside of their piledriver?

Decision makin'!

Well, it could work.  But, I think that it would be best that we postpone any large amount of work on it until everyone is done with their own projects.

Also, if we did any real amount of plot branching, that would make episodic stuff kinda hard.  "Oh. I'm sorry you took the left path instead of right, you have to wait for the next episode."

I see it as helping, as we're now looking at a more manageable four hours of gameplay as opposed to forty. Loose threads could be created (to be started off in the next installment), but the episodic nature is more intended to keep productions short and the content fresh.

I think Kazz abandoned Pod.

Wrong!

I'm going to school!  I've already planned a functioning (if not polished) multiplayer 3D Pod for my final project.  You'll see it in Summer 2010!

So, Arc, that's my contribution timetable, unless you just want me to write silly dialogue.  I am like some kind of silly dialogue machine.

I needed a twelve point scenario with three love interests and a fishing mini-game on my desk yesterday, O'Hax.

You. Are. Fired.

Also this is just an assessment stage, but the shit tossing will begin in earnest when appropriate.

Obviously there needs to be a stupidly obscure way to bring HEART OF GOLD back from the dead, with no effect on the plot. Preferably it will be something involving skipping certain treasure chests.
