What The Mayor is NOT: Kingdom of Loathing.  Strong character is more important than wackiness for its own sake, even if said character is himself rather wacky.

Yes, this is very much less a case of "hay guys, we like games, lets make one" and more the case of a culmination of honed criticism, common interests, and comedy with a foundation.

As for aesthetic, The Mayor is one who claims to be the The Mayor of whatever he happens upon, which includes the World Wide Web. It could be limited to only one kingdom, but if spread across the entire game, then we are dealing with internet memes that must die (always pleasurable) and level designs that don't have to adhere to even rudimentary structure. Think Yume Nikki, but even less organized, and unconcerned with that mood.

As we are dealing with The Internet, it works in the games favor as a promotional tool, if self-insertion is used to any degree (and if done, carefully). Meaning websites and webmasters and online artists and so on who are admired by the development staff to be included in the game with their permission as NPC's, merchants, and locations.

I've some ideas of who to approach for the soundtrack (I've worked with them in the past), and as per usual, am open to recommendations of other artists, both musically and other.

Game Maker has some huge flaws, but the development time would be shorter.

Doing it right in an actual programming language would take longer, but much more stable.

If anybody is even thinking of making this a joint programming effort, and doesn't do at least minimal in-line documentation, or use object oriented principles, you will drive me insane and I will hate you on such a level it makes you combust.

Can we have just a quick few bullet-points on the flaws? Relevant to our interests and all. This absolutely should be a joint-programming project, which means taking it at our own pace. Afterall, we don't have to finish this for Q3 to tie in with the Major Motion Picture & Saturday Morning Cartoon Series (yet).

If you attempt to make a semi-complex AI, such as the common A* algorithm, it will choke and die while taking all of your system resources with it.  Let me dig up my 4-man game from college made in game maker.  I don't think the thing will run under Vista, and level 2 will gradually consume your system resources.

EDIT: Can't get it to run right, will package up and hand out when I figure it out..

By default, Game Maker wants to load ALL graphics and sounds into memory.  If you tell it not to, it will take the time to load it into memory when it's first instanced.  So if you have a sound effect in-game, like a bullet shot, you will pull the trigger and get the bullet sound 30 seconds later.

The obvious middle ground is to do it wrong in an actual programming environment.

Okay, this is a couple years old, and we managed to learn game maker and produce this in eight weeks.  This is probably going to kill your PC in less than 30 minutes.

Max's tank game  Probably will not run on Vista.  I can't get it to work.

I forget if this is the developer release or not, if the ESC key level hops, then it is.  I think Z or something might toggle godmode, it's been a few years.

Again, Level 2 is where it gets ram-consuming.

So what should The Mayor look like? Freak-like body builder-esque build, of course, clad in a pair of slacks w/ suspenders (and tophat, monocle and cigar, of course). What sort of face does he have, though? Square-ish, roundish? Any celebrities that you think he should maybe resemble?

I had an idea, that he'd have a pair of dollar sign-shaped scars on either sides of his cheeks. They were given to him by the poor man that killed his father.

Multiplayer is where the action is at.

Do you recall what version of Game Maker you were using at the time? I see that they are on Version 7. Still, the word of mouth are here isn't that stellar, no matter how suited for this project it may seem.

No suspenders, just an amazing belt. We have begin and end the Mike Haggar resemblance at some point. The man is a walking square. The money sign scar will be burnt onto his torso.

Game Maker 7 is now owned by the guys at Yoyo Games.  Apparently all games can now be played online as a firefox plugin.  The games are kinda crappy, but they run fairly well.

I think Pygame would be a decent choice. And it has the added bonus that if we do it right, it'll be cross-platform.

If you go with that, or with C/C++/C#/Java plus the graphics library of your choice (DirectX, SDL, XNA) I will probably be of use to you.

DN, that is bordering on Nightmare Fuel. Think more squared, and fifteen years younger.

C++ continues to be mentioned. Color me unsurprised.

I'm into the Sewer level in Barkley Gaiden. I'll be honest, I'm astounded by the universal praise that this title has received. The humor is one note, the gameplay linear, and it includes Quick Time Events. And Sewers. Note, The Mayor will never enter any sewers, instead opting to flood them. Fuck sewers.

On the positive side, the input commands for Barkley's attacks are a nice touch. Still, an uptick in shorter conversations, more NPC chatter, and less hand holding would be swell.

Barkley Gaiden's gamplay is simplistic and only moderately enjoyable.  The graphics are atrocious.  The story is insane and stupid.

The only great thing about the game is that you are playing a game called "Barkley's Shut Up and Jam Gaiden", and the product is completed for you to marvel at.

This is NOT the Cave Story of RPGs, it's a joke.  But the fact they completed a game based on a joke makes up for every shortcoming.
