The Emerald Empire
« on: June 16, 2008, 09:51:45 AM »

I'm jumping on the bandwagon and running a 4e game.

The setting:

You've been jailed for a heinous crime you may or may not have committed - but all of that is in the past. After two years of imprisonment in the dirtiest prisons of the world, you've been tossed onto a prison ship and dumped in the ruins of an ancient city on a wild and dangerous continent. Freedom, employment under the king and a promise of land and holdings after the end of the campaign to it's survivors and heroes are your incentive, though realistically, your main motivation is survival. Disease and famine are only minor peril in this hostile land - you are surrounded by primitive enemies on land - vast empires of lizardmen and goblins, and the raiding parties of the sahaguin and kuo-toa at sea.

Restrictions:
Dragonborn are allowed but must be awesome. No proud ancestor of an ancient empire bullshit.

Chargen:
100 gold to start, standard. Any unspent gold is lost.
We're using the pointbuy method. Read the PHB for more info.

Players:
Doom - Dragonborn Cleric Laser Paladin
My Fiance - Currently ungenned Rogue.
Kazz - Human Warlord

I'd like at least two more people before this thing gets off to a start.

Clerics can't use shields without taking feats that cost 13 Str(Light Shield) and 15 Str(Heavy Shield plus Light Shield feat as pre-req) so I decided to be a Paladin.

With 10 str(!) but 16 Cha(!)

So I am now a dragonborn laser tankadin, thanks.

I'll play if you promise not to tell the party about a nearby mansion unless it contains something rewarding.  Also, if you didn't plan for the mansion to contain anything, that you'll at least make something up if the PCs risk their lives to get in.

There's a mansion nearby. It contains dogs and zombies. You rescue the dogs and they join you for an adventure until you leap off a building to your inevitable death.

yeah, I enjoyed that part, where we all had to roll 1d20 and the incorrect result meant immediate death

The point of the game was high lethality! come on, cut me some slack.

All that in mind I learned a lot from the zombiepocalypse game. I really wish it had reached it's end, but I made a lot of mistakes along the way that I would prefer to go back and undo if I could. Shit was way too linear, and with the way saving throws and flanking bonuses worked, could potentially fuck you over pretty hard.

Still, players have never been more terrified of 2hd Zombies.

well, i'm 4e 'tarded myself, so the first few games will be a learning experience regardless.

The priated manuals are all over the internets. Shouldn't have too much trouble finding them.

I'm tempted to join in as a Tiefling warlock, but ultimately it'll depend on when the game sessions would be.

That'd be 4 or 5pm my time, which is at least four hours too early for me on Saturdays. Guess I'll have to pass.

Sig Handsone is brilliant.  His exemplary tactical sense leads him to make intelligent plans and decisions.  Ironically, that's exactly what got him thrown in prison.

Sig joined the military at a young age, and would have excelled, if not for his tendency to question orders.  Every time a superior officer made a decision, Sig pointed out the flaws and offered an alternative.  He never gave up this practice, even though the officers rarely changed their minds.  Sig was often punished for his outbursts, and he was never promoted.

One fateful day, Sig's company was ordered to march straight through a remote mountain pass in enemy territory.  Sig pointed out that they would be under prime conditions for an ambush, but his commander refused to reconsider.  Sig's fellow soldiers agreed with his reasoning, however, and likewise refused to obey the order.  Sig was charged with inciting a mutiny and led away in chains.  The company marched on, and most of the soldiers were killed.

Prison was hard on Sig.  Rumors were spread about him, and they were sufficiently twisted until Sig was blamed for his company's death.  The other prisoners shunned or abused him.  One of them shattered his leg, which is why he now walks with a limp.

Sig, deeply embittered even at his young age, welcomes the opportunity to lead on the island.  However, he is abrasive, often unwilling to compromise, and he shouts orders with undue authority.  Even when he's correct, he fails to command respect.

6 or 7 is fine this Saturday, but there's always a risk that I may work until 10 pm on Saturdays.
