Mega Man 9
« on: June 14, 2008, 10:13:48 AM »

Parish notes that Capcom has allegedly registered Mega Man 9 with Australia's ratings board.

Could be bullshit, could be true.  We'll see.

8 was pretty good.  Those evil fucking "jump, jump, slide, slide" levels notwithstanding.

8 was two generations ago.

Yes, and a ten-year break is just what the original series needed.  (All right, there were Mega Man and Bass and Mega Man: Powered Up, but the latter was a remake and the former mostly serves to prove my point.)

They have registered it.

Can't wait to see the synonym for "Fire" they come up with for this one!

(THAD EDIT: There's really no good reason a post should contain a four-line-long URL.)
(LYRAI EDIT: Sorry, I had just woken up and was extremely irritable so I wasn't thinking clearly)

I drew Scorch Man when I was 12. I should scan that shit up and send it in to Capcom.

It wouldn't be the first time they let twelve-year-olds design the bosses.  And honestly, "Scorch Man" might be a little bit more original than "Wind Man".

I wish I could be excited about Capcom being lazy, corner-cutters.  :profit:

It's...definitely an interesting idea.  Could certainly go either way: a back-to-basics, gameplay-over-graphics approach that takes the series back to what made it great (how cool would it be if there were no power shot?), or Capcom just churning out a low-budget rehash with no thought or effort.

Given that I have played Capcom games before, I am inclined to guess the latter.  (Let us say that I do not have fond memories of the last game I played that used those graphics.  ...Well, the last NES game that used those graphics; MM5 for Game Boy was actually pretty swell.)

Going back to earlier conversation: you know what would get me excited?  Seeing a new Sonic game that looked exactly like one of the Genesis ones.

Well that's... wow.

I'm all for a return to form, but that's a little bit ridiculous.  I mean it would be okay if it were, like, Mario... or Sonic... or Simon... or Snake... or... actually kinda anybody but Megaman.

But, seriously, the fact that the first 6 games were pretty much shoddy ROM hacks of each other has been a serious sore spot for the series and a lot of the reason why it had to be put to bed for so long.  The fact that they've reopened the chest and proceeded to do THE EXACT SAME THING AGAIN is maddening.

Kinda waiting for someone to tell me it's a joke, though.

I heard a rumor that this was going to be how 9 looked a few days ago.  Honestly kinda interesting that it was true.  But it's .. also kinda dumb.  Much as I love the series, 7 and 8 did evolve things graphically.  I would have just liked to see the squishy cartoonishness of Powered Up used, myself.  That said, 7, 8, M&B, and PU all played not quite as tightly (well okay, PU was pretty tight controlling) as the first six games.  But on the other other hand, the Zero and ZX games are basically made entirely out of amazing play control and this is that team.

I'm really torn here.

Wait a minute, Splash Woman?

Galaxy Man hates Mega Man.

You know what would be awesome?  If the entire game looked like blurry Nintendo Power scans.  Because, seriously, that's how I remember 'em.

Taking the long view, this could have a serious long-term impact.  If it does well, other people are going to imitate it.

We may get another 16-bit side-scrolling Sonic yet.

I kinda hope that despite the 8-bit look, they animate things better than the first 6.  From one of the Nintendo Power scans, it looks like they're doing sort of a paper mario thing with megaman being flat and rotating around a magnet platform in the z-axis.

This will be interesting to watch news spill out if nothing else.

I am really, really excited about this.

I've been getting my girlfriend hooked on games lately, and I started her off with Megaman 2. Watching somebody play through this classic for the very first time made me pine for the days when each NES and SNES Megaman game was completely new, and news of a brand-new NES-style release makes me really happy and nostalgic.

I agree that getting the same game but with slightly different levels can be really annoying... especially when the games cost between $40 and $however much NES games reached back in the day. But for around $5-$15? That sounds just about right.

...Incidentally, I've been replaying Mega Man 8 (grabbed a Saturn ISO legally-purchased CD) for the past couple days.

Also, I bought Rockman Mega World on eBay awhile back (I own an old Genesis Game Genie which I use to bypass the region lock) and still haven't gotten around to finishing it.

It is fucking hot in the guest room (where I have my retro consoles set up), but I should probably do that one of these days.
