Got game tonight, because Brent is a standup guy.

Played 3 levels, died 11 times, turned it off.  I am going to savor this motherfucker.

Also: Penny Arcade nailed it -- and on my birthday!

Really, the best thing about Mega Man is that it's designed not just for people to dive into, but people who have already dived into Mega Man.  Like the Invisible coin blocks of Super Mario Bros hacks, Mega Man 9 twists everything you thought you knew and kills you for thinking it 's all going to be completely more of the same.  And you smile, having to applaud the game for its sneaky tactics and pleasant dickishness.

Or, in summary of that,

I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.  MM9 works exactly the same as its predecessors.  You may be remembering them as more forgiving than they actually were.

Yeah, I made it to the midway point of Splash Woman's stage without breaking a sweat because I've still got my Bubble Man (and, to a lesser extent, Spark Man II) reflexes for dealing with falling between spiked walls.

...Then the moving platforms killed me.  Okay, THAT part's new.

Splash Woman doesn't count, her stage is actually pretty easy.  SHE, on the other hand, is a total forking bitch.

Many folk say Splash Woman is the easiest boss to beat with no specials. I disagree; her pattern is simple, but I can't reliably dodge her tridents (though Proto's slide helps). No one is easier than Galaxy Man, anyway.

spikes seem more inconveniently placed in 9.

(spikes at the end of that first momentum platform part on jewel man's stage, spikes at the top of the leaky platform area in splash woman's stage)

They used to be vaguely in the way, now it feels like they are actively trying to annoy you

I could have taken her without any weapons I think.  I had the correct weapon by the time I fought her, but whittled her down to about half energy just with the Mega Buster without taking any hits.  (My standard MO, if I make it to a boss with more than one life left, is to give up a life just figuring out the pattern; this time I was doing well enough that I said fuck it, let's start trying special weapons, picked the right one, and took her out first try with no tank use.)

So what, I should keep my Wii Points for Endless Stage or half a megadrive game or something?

Endless Stage is a lot of fun and is a good way to waste time, but Special Stage is... just a stage with pretty much all the minibosses reused and a new, lame, robot master at the end.

I've only been able to play Hero mode for a couple stages so far, but it's fun in a "oh no you di'int" way.
