Okay, Firefox (3) sucks.
« on: June 28, 2008, 12:46:25 PM »

Okay, so I've been using Firefox 3 for about two months now (since beta 5), and since going to non-beta it hasn't crashed once. However, a good 60% of the websites I go to  that use flash or javascript are broken in Firefox 3. Try using something like imeem and it pops up with some "Is this running on the host client?" thing. Can't it figure that out for it's self? Youtube won't let me digg/bury someones comment, and I cant add videos to my play list. This is not acceptable.

I know Firefox has awesome skins and plug ins. I use the tab thumbnails one amung other things, but until I find a plug in that un-breaks all my favorite websites I'm going to use Opera.

Firefox 3 = .

I use Firefox 3 and experience non of those problems.  Is it possible the error is somehow client side?

Maybe, but I don't see how. I just did standard install.

I have serious Flash problems, but I'm running 64-bit Linux and am confident it's a Flash problem, not a Firefox problem.

Haven't had any trouble with the Windows version, but I haven't used it much, either.

I've had it crash once due to a poorly programmed java applet.

also type "About:robots" without quotes into the address bar

I'm using 64 bit Vista, and again, no problems.  So I'd suspect it might be a flash problem.

But!  While not related to Firefox 3, Thunderbird seems to have a fun glitch where if something gets marked as spam that isn't supposed to be, and you mark it as not spam, it apparently breaks the spam filter entirely, causing it to mark nothing as spam.  Anyone else have Thunderbird and experience this problem?

I've been having flash problems. 32 bit, xp. Both at work and at home. Could be a noscript conflict, but I doubt it (since I allow scripts fully on the sites that I'm having the problems with.)

Could be 3, could be flash. Either way, it's a minor problem. I fucking hate flash to begin with, and Firefox 3 is so much faster than it's predecessor that it more then makes up for it.

Nope; spam filter works great for me.

Is it a recent install?  I can see how a small sample would screw up the Bayesian stat analysis.

Firefox 3 is so much faster than it's predecessor that it more then makes up for it.

This is definitely a positive; Firefox 3 is clearly an optimization version rather than a feature-creep version.

(I used to remark, back in the Netscape days, that every odd version was good, and that's why they skipped 5.)

Opera 9.5 is fine too.

That's my obligatory Opera plug for this thread.

I have been having no trouble with Firefox 3. I do, however, think the navigation toolbar is ass-ugly, though.

And no, I have not put in the time to find a decent theme, thank you for asking.

Hooray for Oldbar.

Flash still runs kind of badly for me.  It mainly slows the browser down when there's more than one embedded video on a page, especially if I've played (read: allowed to buffer) two of them.

I'm kinda bummed that Online Music Player won't work anymore, but that's it.

FireFox2 had been becoming increasingly incompatible over the past few months, so a download of FF3 was in order. Sites now load in their entirety before displaying.

I'd like a way to kill the fucking "smooth scrolling" that occurs when I MW scroll the tab bar.  It's skippy, slows things down, doesn't really look good, and generally needs to die.

I use Forecastfox, NoScript, Greasemonkey, Aardvark, Firebug, Adblock Plus, PDF Download, Oldbar, DownThemAll! (for when I want to download a bunch of files by a mask, such as all links matching "*.mp3" in a directory), sometimes Torbutton and Stealther :eloH:, and maybe a couple others I'm forgetting.

I use the Firefox Vista theme, because the XP one is uglier, IMO.  I'm pretty pleased that the default Firefox 3 themes didn't look shitty, the way they did in 2.  I used to use Winestripe for the old Firefox theme.

(Also, I've been having better experience with Opera 9.5 than I was with 9.2.  The default theme is prettier and, more importantly, seems to be a bit better behaved with different color schemes.  Also, they finally killed that detestable bullshit in which when I used middle-click to pan a page, it would spawn the panning anchor in the middle of the web site, instead of where I middle-clicked.)

Oh hey, I just noticed that.  Time to start using middle-click again.

Already had that unchecked.  That refers to smooth scrolling the content pane (general.smoothScroll?).  I googled for a while, trying to find a fix, but didn't really have much luck.  EDIT: So, when I took the space out of "tab bar" I hit something almost right away.

Go to about:config, and set toolkit.scrollbox.smoothScroll to false.

I think I had found and tried that before (about:config, filter *smooth*) to no effect, probably because I didn't think to restart Firefox for it to take effect.

I'm not sure we have enough stuff for an Opera thread, but Advanced search, thumbnails & sorting in opera:cache can be pretty handy.

Speaking of Opera, there's a god damned BAFFLING bug that will arbitrarily not allow me to type "(" into youtube's search box.  "9" goes in fine, ")" goes in fine, but not "(".  Pressing shift+9 just makes nothing happen.  Maybe there's some kind of escaped code and it's trying to go to speed dial 9 or some shit I've never configured?  Annoying.
