Seems that you can make a creature at any phase, but if you play through them in order then you make small, incremental changes to the creature you had before. You can't ever make an intermediate step that's not viable but you're always in control and you can skip the intermediate steps.

Which is exactly as it should be.  Evolve your creature from scratch, or make one fully evolved out of nothing.

The former will likely always beat the latter in survivability.

I'm concerned that there will be no real reason to experiment or try something really novel. Will my talking mattress creature ever have any reason to develop bedknobs? Probably not, probably I'm just going to insist on that being part of their design.

Clearly, there are improbable creatures I want to create or force into evolving, but I'm more interested in actually seeing a virtual evolution occur.

Incidentally, I can't be bothered to watch that NASA show. Someone give me the highlights? Also: Eyes? Sensory organs in general? Does the creator discuss those?

Creature Creator on June 17

Quote
The free demo version of the Spore Creature Creator will be available worldwide via download from www.spore.com. The demo lets players mold, shape, paint and play with an unlimited number of creatures, using 25 percent of the creature-making parts from Spore.

...

A complete retail version of the Spore Creature Creator will also be available in North America for $9.99 and most European territories for €9.99, which gives players access to all the creature-making parts in the game.

So that's how they plan to make money with the thing.  By making money with the thing!

It's a hideous ripoff, a brand of highway-robbery, and a slap in the face of awaiting Spore fans everywhere, and yes I am buying it thank you very much.

Well before we start Pyolympic events around a commercial product, how many of you are actually going to preemptively spend money on this?

Point A, -lympic events around a commercial product are not unprecedented.

Point B, using the demo version is just as viable.

Very yes.  I'm glad it's not too expensive, though it probably guarantees no rebate on Spore itself.

Kazz makes good points about the -lympic event.  10 bucks ain't bad, even if it were the only option.

I wonder what the competition will wind up being....

"Who can make the scariest dick monster competition"?
"Spore original species contest"?
"Who can best recreate videogame and tv show characters battle"?
or "WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT"?

Actually, you're not far off on any of those guesses.

My original idea involved the categories of "Most Legitimately Frightening Creature" and "Most Convincing Genitalia", as well as the standard "Coolest Overall Design" bijdang.

A creature editor was inevitable, just based on the precedent set by the Sims, and I was fully prepared to pay up to 2/3 of the retail price to get sweaty palms all over it.

I downloaded the free demo early from pirate bay and messed around with it a bit.

I'm disappointed that you can only have 12 mouths.

But it is quite fun.

Pirated five days before release.  Yep, that copy protection is working out super.
