I'm still more interested in playing the game straight and trying to compensate for other people's penis-monsters trying to eat me.  The end result will probably be weirder and more interesting than anything I could come up with off the top of my head.  Plus, it'd be especially designed to fight penises.

If were going to make creatures based on countries, I hope you can make a race of incredibly arrogant mustached frogs that make accordion noises.

The comparison to Miis has made me ponder how long it takes until the game becomes a competition to make the most horrifying sin against god (most likely less than 5 minutes).

The first non-original creature I make is likely to be a Prinny.  Then Servbots, Metools, haros, fleamen and medusa heads.  Maybe some pikmin too.

Something about cocks.

Your love of sim-evolution is all well and good, but what kind of horrible penises would you want to contribute? What bizarre and possibly epic <insert emoticon here> would you want to make?

Seriously, you're the kind of asshole who goes to a Baker's Square and sits around talking about how pies and American food are overrated, and how even though he's at Baker's Square now for pie, he's only really excited about going out for... I dunno, what do you eat? Cookies? Babies? Cocks? You're really excited about going out for cocks, and won't shut up about how hungry you are for cocks and all of the neat ways you're going to eat them.
I'm pretty excited for evolving things the old fashioned way, but from what little I've seen, it doesn't look like the kind of game SPORE is. If it turns out I'm 100% wrong, I'm going to be really excited and set to the task of seeing where the environmental pressures take my protozoans. Until then, I'm going to try the creator and see if I can't make rabites or some shit like that. I mean, don't you have anything you're curious to try creating with the free toy they plan to pass out?
The game engine's been in kind of an ambiguous state.  I remember in early demos people were putting mouths on the end of arms and such but eventually every limb you added to the creature automatically terminated in either a hand or a foot (depending on the limb selected).  I understand the desire to limit the awkwardness of trying to animate a bunch of pointless limbs that haven't been given game verbs to carry out, but I'll be very disappointed if I can't somehow stick a toothy maw on the end of a long, flailing limb.

I dunno, something original and creative and not something I've seen in some other fucking game where it was much more entertaining?

Your cute little metaphor is okay, but let me refine it for you.  I'm the kind of asshole who goes to an art gallery and finds out to his dismay that there's nothing but Andy Warhol pieces everywhere.  I appreciate the intent well enough, but I didn't come here to see another Campbell's soup can.

I don't think creatures will evolve naturally in Spore. They seem to be either built, generated randomly, or downloaded from someone else that built or randomly generated them.

Enlightened discussion about being an ass that thinks cocks are way overdone and don't really add anything to his experience.
:whut: So are you trying to say you want to make digimons?

It seems to me like attempting to create something in the likeness of something else has inherent value to the creative process. If for no other reason than it would presumably challenge your abilities with your tools and force the kind of mastery upon them that lets you experiment with those tools in ways that are actually novel and further push the expectations people have for the creature generator.

It seems like it's worth it to paint a few wholesome family scenes and soup cans before you try to make something actually new and novel. I'm not just suggesting making humans/pokemon/catgirls because I'm horrifically uncreative! Though that's certainly a big factor here...

Glad I'm not the only one who had that impression.

I don't see why you need to bring grandiose analogies into it.  Classic, you are defending a bunch of people making giant penis animals.

Hey! Whoa there! I'm not defending giant penis animals! I'm defending the possibility and (extremely creepy) validity of catgirls as common prey animals.

spoiler: I bring grandiose analogies into it because it's fun, and because the more analogies that we have about wholesome digimon penis soup cans the better.

Glad I'm not the only one who had that impression.

I'm not glad that you are both so dumb. Obviously you guys have never seen the gameplay videos or Will Wright presentations that have been around since GDC 2007.

You start the game as a plankton and then as the game progresses you have to earn and buy new parts for your creature. You don't start the game being allowed to make whatever the fuck you want, every limb or foot you add to your creature costs "gil" (for lack of the no doubt tongue in cheek term Wright will eventually choose for the unit). So in  a very real sense, any creature that players make while playing the game and don't just make in the non-game editor mode will evolve during that time and will be based at least partly on what the player was struggling to overcome at the time. Appearance is completely up to the creativity of the player of course, but completely impractical creatures that don't somehow adapt to their environments will make getting to the civilization stage difficult if not impossible.

I assume it will be the former because I suspect that Will wants people to beable to fuck around as long as they are willing to put up with the consequences.

It looked to me in all of those play-samples that they just let you open up the creature editor and generally muck about with your model as much as you want. You're still designing the creature pretty carefully by choosing the "mutations" that occur. I can think of ways that would make your creature's design process look a lot more like evolution and reward trying unusual things, but in the demo I saw it was pretty clearly an infinite design$ scenario and I can't guess how the "evolution" store will work.

I guess what I'm saying is: It seems like what you're looking for isn't quite what I was hoping for. But I'll settle for the ability to make carebears eat digimon dics and pokemon penises and vice-versa.

If Pyoko is to be believed - and it isn't - then the game actually allows you to play either way.  You can bullshit something up in the creature editor and shoot it right off into space if you want.

This is where people seem to think I'm angry, and I'm not (yet), but I'm desperately trying to get people to focus on the whole game and not just the look-at-this-thing-I-ripped-off-and-put-in-Spore aspect of it.  It's just that there are much better games out there for that sort of thing (CoH, Graffiti Kingdom if you don't mind the experience being rather shallow) and I don't want the entirety of a rather good idea mucked up by the sheer banality of the average peen.

Watch the NASA presentation.

Different and more effective parts must be earned, but there is plenty to begin with and all editors and stages of the game are available from the beginning.

I was under the impression that the stand alone creature editor was to fill the game with other random creatures at various levels of badassedness. That it was made as a answer to how the hell they're going to get enough user made shit into the game fast enough to do the whole 'completely user created item set' thing they want to do with it.

I was always under the impression that you'd be evolving your creature that you take through the game with the 'points' or 'money' that you get for doing stuff and that the stand-alone creature editor was just to fill out all the other shit in your world.

I'm fairly sure the population of spore will be:

1% interesting original creations
9% ripoffs of other pop culture franchises
90% HURF DONGS

Creating original content is HARD, which is why people are usually PAID for it.

Your rate for ripoffs seems too low, and your rate for interesting creations seems too high. Well, I've already expressed my pedestrian intentions for the creature creator, and mostly look forward to hearing about other people's pedestrian/creative processes.

... Suddenly I want to make the cast of "brave little toaster" and give them vaguely human-looking technologies. You know, a toaster putting it's toast into a gaping human maw to heat it. That sort of thing.

I think the point of the Spore creator is that it's relatively simple to make something that looks interesting with no artistic talent.  It would be much harder to copy something that exists than it would be to make something weird and somewhat interesting.  I mean, how hard is it to pull the body into a weird shape and slap on arms wherethefuckever?

Apparently the rumor is that the delays are due to the fact that the actual product as it stands right now isn't quite as fun to play as it is to talk about.  Which is pretty much how I feel about The Sims, but I'm at least glad to see that they're at least attempting to make Will Wright's Pee taste as sweet as possible.
