It's a demo, hopefully there is no copy protection.

I think it's copied off of a giveaway CD, in fact.

Oh, hell.  The installer says my version of DirectX isn't current enough, and the DirectX download page wants to see if my version of Windows is genuine.

Never mind.  It's actually quite easy to update DirectX through legitimate channels without telling The Man where I got my OS from.

so um.

I think I might be the only person on the planet who's interest in Spore was completely killed by playing around with the Creature Creator.  Is there something wrong with me?

No.

The Creature Creator is fun, but after making like 50 creatures, it's not abnormal to get tired of the damned thing.

My impression is that creature creation is like 10% of the activity in Spore.  You're also able to design all the tanks and buildings and shit that your civilization creates, and anyway I'm interested in the creature phase during which you have to hunt, mate, etc.  It's important to me to see how effectively it's done; I'll explain why some other time.

Furthermore, the concept of an empire-building game that doesn't have a win or loss condition appeals to me.

I dunno, my interest was completely killed when they announced that it would be bundled with invasive malware and require you to phone home to activate a single-player, offline game.

Man, this puts my lack of interest due to Will Wright being one of the many people in the game industry that I wish I could hate until he died from my sheer acidic hatred is due to Peter Molyneux Syndrome from damn near everyone I know of that's getting it (second coming of Christ, sliced bread etc).

I'll admit I had a lot more enthusiasm for Spore a year and a half ago.

Now, it's just like, enh.  Whatever.  The creature creator will probably provide all my interest until (at the earliest) civilization mode, probably.

Spore missed its window.  It is a sad and common event in the entertainment industry, and should not be considered with any especial amount of curiosity or sympathy.

The window itself is worthy of consideration, of course.  It is a very tricky and fickle thing to approach, and sometimes the effect of missing it is not immediately obvious.  A notable previous example is Super Smash Bros Brawl, which missed its window and went on to be extremely popular at its release - but with the aftereffect that its popularity died almost immediately, as the level of impatience generated by overshooting the window simply couldn't be overcome by any product.  And although it is common sense, it must be noted that undershooting the window has just as disastrous, if not more disastrous results - Hellgate: London being the example par exellence in this instance.

I think the creature creator had a detrimental effect because of the sinking feeling that no matter what your creature looks like, no matter how wildly unique it is, it will be playing the exact same goddamn game.

And yeah, they released the most interesting part of the game ahead of time.  The UFO stage looks interesting, but I just feel like I'm going to be paralyzed by the lack of direction.  And the other stages will be only as fun as the gameplay allows, which seems tough to work out when you're making at least four different games at once.

The difference is that Wright actually made good games, as opposed to being 100% hype (why were we supposed to be excited over Dennis Dyack's spooge again?).

Splitmerged with old Spore thread.  I figure there will be quite a bit of discussion once the game finally hits.

I'm not as excited as I was before, but I'm still looking forward to it. The creature creator didn't wow me but the concept of it never wowed me in the first place, so I didn't really care. What made me excited about the game originally wasn't that I was going to be able to make creatures, it was that I was going to be able to make a creature over time, help him to survive and evolve until he was intelligent and then make all the buildings in his Simcity, make all his people's tanks and airships etc, and then make a cool spaceship for him and fly around to the worlds of other players and teach them that letting a master computer run their lives isn't right by having sex with their females.

I wasn't judging the game itself, I just can't keep the same level of optimism I had for three years before the creator came out.  There's really nothing to discuss now but our deepest fears until the game is actually released.

I haven't tried the creator at all. Fuck it, I have zero interest in it. If I want to make an animal with asses for asses I can just damn well draw one.

What I want is a next-gen version of E.V.O.
