Or a next-gen ActRa... oh, right.  Well, another sequel to that which isn't an overall disappointment, then, please.

Trying to decide whether or not to spell out the fact that I'm talking about Dark Cloud.

On that note, weird original PC-9801 version ahoy:

Amazing what you can dig out of the fossil record these days.

For some reason it makes entirely more sense knowing it was originally an obscure Japanese PC game.

I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that the strategy portion of the game will be satisfying at all, and since that's the part of the game I actually care about, I'm holding off my purchase until I hear otherwise from people whose opinions I trust.

So, uh, there are torrents of the game floating around the internet right now.  Is that sort of thing a touchy subject around here or not?  I'm not too sure exactly what the general attitude towards that sort of thing with this group.

Pirating Spore kind of defeats the point. So much so that I'm not even sure how it would work, so I don't really care.

You could still download all the creature and object files you like, I suppose.

I don't know that Spore is going to be the second coming of christ, or whatever, but I do think it'll be a game worth supporting.

considering that I can not play online games at the moment, I am probably going to be a total Sphore in the coming weeks.  even if I dislike the game, I will force myself to love it.

First thing you'll notice in the game, if you spent a good amount of time with the Creature Creator: the stats awarded by your parts do not stack.  If your grabber gives you Level 2 strike, and you add a weapon with Level 1 strike, your creature will still have Level 2 strike.

Also, the individual parts are too much fun and do not last nearly long enough so far.  Then again, I started my first game on Easy.

Sounds like precisely what I don't want to play from the reviews I've read so far.

Quote
“I’d say that’s quite accurate,” Wright told me. “We were very focused, if anything, on making a game for more casual players. “Spore” has more depth than, let’s say, “The Sims” did. But we looked at the Metacritic scores for “Sims 2″, which was around 90, and something like “Half-Life“, which was 97, and we decided — quite a while back — that we would rather have the Metacritic and sales of “Sims 2″ than the Metacritic and sales of “Half-Life.”

Ignoring for a moment that Half-Life's sales are nothing to sneeze at, it's amusing to hear someone from EA say out loud "Nah, we don't really care about review scores after all."

My biggest objection with the game right now is that it's extremely difficult to get the game to consider you anything other than a vicious killer if you start out as a Carnivore.  This is because after the Cell stage, you're deep in the red already when you start Creature.  If you defend yourself at all while running around trying to make friends, you won't get back out of the red.  Then in Tribal stage, if you only kill the two tribes that start out outright hostile to you, the end result will be Aggressive.

This means the game does not really reflect your behavior in the traits that it gives you, and since your species changes its personality depending on your traits, it feels extremely wrong.  My dudes were immediately yelling for atomic bombs in the Civilization intro when I was doing my best ever since Cell NOT to kill everything that so much as looked at me.

It would make a lot more sense if the stupid morality graph would go back to the middle at the beginning of each stage.

Spore is basically Wario ware on a retardedly grand scale. I like it, but it's not what Wil Wright made it out to be and I suspect that that is going to upset a lot of gamers.
