Seeing it tomorrow.

Went to buy tickets early (could have bought online, but ticket prices are still worse than gas prices and I'd rather get a $2 student discount than a $1 service charge), but they were already sold out for the rest of the day on their biggest screen.  Could have seen it on one of the smaller screens, but decided, why fuck around, better to see it on the biggest (non-IMAX) screen in Arizona tomorrow than half-ass it today.

(As for IMAX, the local one doesn't show movies until they're no longer showing in the adjacent regular theater.  Some kind of contract with the management or something.  So the nearest IMAX showing it is the aforementioned Deer Valley AMC, which is 25 miles away.  And it's not a full-size IMAX, so it's not really that much damn bigger than the Cine Capri anyway.)

...Incidentally, I am the biggest Batman fan I know (I put on my Joker T-shirt today for nothing!), but I still don't understand the mentality that leads people to stand in line in 110-degree heat to see a fucking movie.

The Joker's Asylum mini just launched it's first issue, featuring The Penguin. The premise for the series has the Joker telling tales about his various fellow rogues from within Arkham, and if this first issue is any indication, this is really one to watch.  The writing is superb, but it's the art that really steals the show here. The penguin is rendered variously as the downtrodden nerd, the gentleman criminal, and the genuinely monstrous killer he's been portrayed as over the years, and each seems to fit perfectly as part of the whole. Highly recommending this one.

The next issue is Poison Ivy, and I can't wait.

Picked it up on your recommendation.  Less enthusiastic about it than you are.  Penguin was definitely the stronger issue of the two -- I'm not familiar with Aaron's work, but he's apparently been an Eisner nominee.

The Poison Ivy ish is a half-step away from porn.

Actually, the first issue was about the Joker himself, and it seems that I'm the only one here who's read it.

It's an excellent example of compressed, sequential art storytelling, and you're all missing out. I'll be scoping out the other issues.

Spoiler-free thoughts on Dark Knight:

The reviews were not hyperbole.  This is not only the best Batman movie ever, but the best superhero movie ever.

That something like this could be made a mere 11 years after Batman and Robin is absolutely mindblowing.

I'm not ready to say it's the equivalent of No Country or There Will Be Blood, but I WILL say that my visceral reaction to it is the same as to those.  I will be chewing on this for days.

This is the kind of movie that gives superheroes, and comic books as a medium, mainstream recognition and respect.  The characters, the philosophy, the iconography, the mythology...this is superhero fiction at its finest.

And of course I'd be remiss in ignoring the supervillains who are its lynchpins.  Ledger's Joker combines the best of Finger's, Miller's, Moore's, and Morrison's, and a number of others, I can only assume.  It's been said before, but where Jack Nicholson was Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger IS the Joker.  The man would have had a truly bright future ahead of him.

I DO think there was one false note.  Anyone who's seen the movie and has paid at least a slight bit of attention to my opinions on comics can probably guess what it is.

But nothing's perfect, and this is closer to it than even I expected.

More as I process it.

When I got home last night after seeing it I logged onto ventrilo and after making one really bad joke about Ledger being dead infront of the camera and completely lifeless in the role, I immediately began to gush over how blown away I was by the movie. I was filled with an energy that I feel allowed me to articulate how I felt about it perfectly at the time and I honest don't think I'll be able to do so with the same accuracy ever again. I don't think I have the energy to even try.

So instead I'm afraid all I can offer you is some scattered thoughts and humour because apparently the movie splattered the majority of my brain all over the walls of my skull.

The negative reviews are hilarious and common but not really maddening because everytime I actually read one of them, the guy writing it comes off as a total moron who didn't take the movie seriously because he's a douche-bag. I am actually going to post a lot of these sometime this week in my next installment of Game Failers, but here's a couple for you to enjoy now.

Quote from: Wall Street Journal
Batman's psychic scars are mirrored by those of the Joker, while his lofty ambitions and grievous failings find their counterparts in Harvey Dent. He's the tight-jawed district attorney played by Aaron Eckhart, who also plays the hideously, and finally tediously, deformed Two-Face. (Both of those incarnations flip a coin fatefully in the fashion of Javier Bardem's monster in "No Country For Old Men," except that this coin has two heads, so what's the point?)

Wow...

Quote
The production outbonds Bond with technology that includes a new Batsuit made of titanium-dipped triweave fiber (so Bruce can turn his head), a two-wheeled vehicle called a Bat-Pod (they couldn't call it an iPod and they didn't want to call it a motorcycle) and a new Batmobile that looks to be less than brilliant when it comes to gas mileage. Quick shots of the control panel show two of the car's operating modes to be Loiter and Intimidate. The movie's main mode is Suffocate.

Yeah, what was with that NEVER BEFORE SEEN batmobile I really wasn't expecting that. What was worse though was the "bat-pod". I mean, they just wouldn't shut up about that thing. I think "bat-pod" was said more times in that movie than "Dark" and "Knight" put together and that scene where batman was dancing around with it as a black silhouette standing on a bright single-colour background? Horrible.

One of the things I really loved about the movie was how real it manages to make the whole thing seem while keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time. There is nothing boring about this movie and with how long it is, that's pretty amazing. But as exciting as it is, nothing ever seems over the top. The Joker is introduced and used thoroughly as a believable and yet fasinating character and yet he is the Joker. He wears a purple suit most of the time, he's got the make up on, he makes jokes all the time, makes the batmobile lose a wheel and then gets away. I dunno what it is, maybe it's just the fact that he never releases neon green toxic gas on his enemies or fires a bang-flag at anyone, but he just seems real. Heath Ledger's performance and Nolan's direction and writing suck you in and present the Joker to you in a way that despite his intensely cruel and theatric nature, he never seems outlandish.

I guess it's sort of why the whole movie works so well. You could probably take most of this movie, strip out everything batman from it and still be left with a pretty exciting crime drama along the lines of Se7en or what have you. But then you add the fact that it's Batman and what that offers the movie in terms of characters and themes and the result is a movie that blows you away. It is a movie that only benefits from being a superhero movie and in no way can be seen as suffering from having to be based on its source material and that's what something like Batman deserves. It deserves to be taken seriously and treated seriously and made to shine, not to be tied to a stick and then dangled around in front of us like a couple of batman movies in the past have done.

No, it's not perfect, there is a character or two that don't really seem to mean much and the storyline isn't seamless, it's true. But the movie never gave me a chance to dwell on those grievences and what the movie does right and perfectly made such a stronger impression on me that I really have to think about them hard before they start to annoy me.

Picked it up.  Art was a damn mess but the story was solid and had a nice twist ending.

Suspension of disbelief got a little thick, though.  I don't care WHAT the hell you get the contestants on your game show to sign, if you refuse to allow the police in to defuse a hostage situation you are fucking-well going to get charged for it.

Lovin' all the could - be - true urban legends popping up, like the elderly woman in Italy who vomited after seeing Two-Face, or the man arrested in New Jersey caught 'wrestling with himself', or the Utah father arrested for leaving his 2-year old son in the car to watch a midnight showing and oh wait that one was true.

::(: Leave a Hi-C for the kid next time, will ya?

Comic-Con Brave and the Bold footage

It actually looks really good.  It's not the dark, brooding Batman we all know and love these days, more the 60s wacky Batman.  The music and several of the scenes are very reminiscent of the Tick.  Grabs me at Plastic-Man getting eaten by a T-Rex, keeps me for the headless horseman ghost with a skull cane.

There's also an interview, but I must go to bed.

Paul Dini is writing an episode featuring Bat-Mite.

Related: Nrama's Batman panel coverage.

Morrison continues dropping hints on the RIP villain; says it's someone everyone knows and nobody has guessed.  If it turns out to be Alfred, remember I'm the guy who called it.

(Supporting evidence: the latest issue features the villain saying something like "I'll make him MY butler."  Of course, he's then shown standing over a bound-and-gagged Alfred, but that could be misdirection.)

Even more related: Nrama's Brave and the Bold panel coverage.

EDIT after reading the interview: This sounds great.  Bader's a great choice, and these guys have a great idea for what kind of territory they're going to carve out.

A few years ago my reaction would have been "Why?" -- and was, with The Batman.  But by all accounts it got really good in its last couple seasons (I've got them queued but haven't gotten around to them yet; last I saw was Brooke Shields as Harley, which WAS a good ep).  And anyway, now that we're farther away from the disappointing and unnecessary cancellation of JLU and the (I am still hoping not permanent) end of the Timmverse, I'm more open to new ideas.

I love that they're trying to tread new ground -- "somewhere between Adam West and TAS" is a great high-concept, and there's some great potential for teamups here.  Looking forward to it.

I'd say Scarecrow's the best yet.  Doe's art looks a little derivative of Cooke's, but the color really makes it pop.

Story is interesting mainly for its similarity to the Penguin issue.  Tends to reinforce the "comic books are written by nerds who got picked on by the cool girls in high school" stereotype.

The end of the DC Nation 2 panel reveals that Denny O'Neil's got a Batman book coming, as do Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert.

The latter is called Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

EDIT: More, but not much.

So it's actually in continuity? Man, I'd have to be some kind of detective to figure out which story arc it's following.

Catwoman is named dropped heavily.

Usually with a "please don't make her a prostitute" caveat.

Morrison has seen Ledger's Joker Diary, and compares it to his own cerebral #663.

Well, he doesn't just COMPARE it; Ledger copied lines from it verbatim.

Heh.  Sombreros.

#663 was one of Morrison's best -- and that's from someone who doesn't think he's put a bad issue out.  He still hasn't really followed it up.  We've seen Joker a couple times since, with the new look and all, but it's been nearly two years and it still feels like there's another shoe waiting to drop.

I'm surprised by the number of people recommending Hugo Strange, but as one of the more down-to-Earth villains, he WOULD be a great fit to the Nolanverse.  Plus he IS the original Batman rogue, predating both Joker and Catwoman by months.

Looking over my copy, and yes, I 'd, since I read the issue back in February of '07, and then heard about the contents of the diary exactly a year later, but never connected the two. It was released around the time Ledger was prepping the role, and is indeed verbatim.

Good to hear the better Bat Works are selling, yet Dark Victory could stand to be mentioned alongside Long Halloween more often.
