I continue to love the art on Detective Comics.  The story is still take-or-leave.

And the thing that continues to bug me about Batwoman is that while they appear to be trying to treat her sexuality in a sensitive and non-exploitative way, they keep pulling this shit where all the lesbians on DC Earth have to hang out together.  As if the whole Renee thing weren't enough, in the latest issue it's revealed that Sawyer's moved to Gotham and she's single now.  I mean, Jesus, guys, really?

I mean, I LIKE Sawyer.  I've never read a comic she's appeared in, but I liked her on Superman: TAS, and I particularly liked that they worked her sexual orientation into it in a way that was subtle enough to get past the network censors but obvious enough that I got it right away despite having no familiarity with her character from the comics.  (There's an ep or two where she's in the hospital and there's a woman by her bedside who, to the best of my recollection, you don't see anywhere else in the series.)

It's kinda like how, over on the Marvel side, Black Panther and Storm are childhood friends.  Because if two people are from Africa, they MUST know each other.  It's just one of those things where writers, under editorial edict, are trying to be sensitive and openminded but instead just end up emphasizing how white heterosexual overgrown-adolescent male their genre tends to be.

Still, at least we're leaps and bounds past the 1990's now.

That reminds me. The episode "Epilogue" of JLU always rankled me for this reason. I thought revealing that Terry is Bruce's biological son was irritating and diminished the character in my estimation. He was far stronger as a separate entity who had taken up the batmantle.

I  don't know; even though Waller directly says, "You're Bruce's son," the whole rest of that conversation pretty concretely says having nanoBatsperm did nothing more than give Terry the physical capacity to become a Batman should the motivation/necessity arrive.

Therein lies the issue. I think it was better that Terry was able to handle the rigors of superheroism without having some sort of genetic predisposition towards it.

It's the same reason midichlorians were a stupid idea.

I dunno, I guess I'm fine with that because Bruce having lived past 35 is a pretty huge suspension of disbelief already.

As soon as I saw it, though, I assumed it was planned from the beginning, not a retcon.  I always -- ALWAYS -- wondered why Terry and his brother had black hair when neither of their parents did.

Oh man, the Music Meister episode of Brave and the Bold was awesome. Neil Patrick Harris just gets cooler and cooler.

Personally, I always figured that Terry's mother was an Hispanic woman who died her hair red.

My grasp of genetics is hazy in general but as I understand it:

Human hair color is determined by two pigments, eumelanin (brown) and pheomelanin (red).  The eumelanin, "brown" allele is dominant (meaning that if it is present it "overrides" the contrasting allele, basically "not-brown") and the pheomelanin allele is recessive (is overridden by the "not-red" allele).  More pigmentation leads to darker hair colors, less pigmentation leads to lighter or blonde hair.

Normally black hair is due to a high presence of eumelanin, but it's likely that if you take a good amount of brown pigment and add on top of that a red pigment you'll end up with a hair color dark enough to be rendered as black by the artists' intentionally limited palette.  Mary had very red hair, and Warren had brown hair with a noticeably red tint, suggesting that he had some red in him which wouldn't override Mary's.  In other words, Terry and Matt could have easily inherited high levels of both pigments, ending up with a combined hair color that was very dark/black.

...

Or, you know, they could just be part of the Super-Batman Project.

...so where are you guys finding these things?  I'm starting to hit gaps in what I can find after ep 13 or so.

(Did catch the Bat-Mite one.  Don't think there's anything I need to say about it to those who've seen it.  And to those who haven't, you really should; it's already posted in this thread for God's sake.)

Batman The Animated Series Writer's Bible

Pretty neat, the reference and guides the writers for the show used when crafting episodes.

CBR buries the lede in an Emerald City Comic-Con DC Nation post (I should note that the post contains Cry for Justice spoiler text that is supposed to be invisible but isn't -- but you either already know what happened or don't give a fuck, or both): there's not just a Batman Beyond one-shot coming up in the Batman/Superman Annual, there's an ongoing series starting in June.

Some quick thoughts from the comments thread:

Superman Beyond? A book about a Superman-type character in the future? I'd love to read that.
It might just be the older Superman we saw in the Batman Beyond TV series, but it WOULD be much more interesting to see another torch-passing situation.

In "Epilogue" (which was set 15 years after Batman Beyond), Bruce tells Terry that "Kent called" -- but that doesn't necessarily mean Clark.

Actually, seeing an older Clark surrounded by family would make for a perfect contrast to Bruce's brooding isolation.

I think it would be neat if the new Superman was Clark's adopted son -- that would make for a neat contrast too, Clark raising a son who's not biologically his, while Terry didn't meet Bruce until his teens and didn't know he was his biological father until his thirties.

so if he Clark's adopted son That means he do not have the powers of Superman Why use the name if There is nothing about him that is Super
Well, they could go with another Kryptonian (a la Chris Kent), but that would be boring -- I think it would be more interesting to have a new Superman who has a DIFFERENT set of powers than the original.

Or maybe he has a bunch of Superman-like powers but, unbeknownst to the public, they're all just gadgets (a la Supernova).

Quote from: Dick/babs
I hope they use the Idea of the child of Lashina and Superman that became the new ruler of Apokolips that They were planning to use for the 4 season of of Batman Beyond
First I've heard of it. Sounds interesting, but I don't think a Superman like that would be a good foil for Batman in an ongoing series -- unless Terry played the brighter, sunnier character and Superman Jr. was the grim-and-broody one.

(On rereading the original article, it doesn't really look like there will be an ongoing Superman/Batman Beyond series, just a Superman/Batman Beyond one-shot followed by a Batman Beyond series.)

Interviews with the writer at Nrama and CBR.  I misspoke when I said it was an ongoing series; it's just a mini -- still pretty excited, though.

Sounds like it falls a little ways after the end of the series but significantly before Epilogue.  Beechen says that Terry still butts heads with Bruce but he's more experienced and confident now, which leads me to infer that it's after Return of the Joker, since I think that was a real turning point as far as Terry holding his own.

More references to Batman's supporting cast -- not sure how I feel about that.  BB did a fantastic job when it brought in the old rogues, but that was because it did it so SPARINGLY.  Seeing a bunch all at once might spoil the effect -- though it appears at least that they're expanding the universe a bit by including characters who were never shown in the DCAU.

He mentions doing a few things to tie it to the comics continuity, and give it a darker tone.  That worries me a bit, and I'm concerned it might be an editorial decision, but he's obviously a fan and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.  Very much looking forward to it.

The latest issue of Gotham City Sirens has characters named "Joel" and "David", which happen to be my first and middle name.  I've been scouring the issue for any hidden messages.
