The pitch was "make us a cartoon with Batman as a teenager". Dini and Timm considered just jumping off a bridge until one of them pitched "Okay, a teenager IN THE FUTURE" back and then used that to spin it to not be awful. It was like two wrongs making a right.

...so uh there was no new episode last night, right?  Scorn of the Star Sapphire got pushed back (again) presumably to coincide with the GL movie?

Because the AV Club put up a review of the episode and now it's a 404.

Did they catch ANOTHER fucking guy writing reviews of things that aren't actually out yet?

I don't keep up with new episodes, but I saw a bunch of screenshots of the Star Sapphire episode on 4chan, so presumably it was leaked or it aired internationally first.

Which is slightly better than Leonard Pierce reviewing a book he hasn't read, but you still don't really want to get caught pirating a TV show for a professional review.

So I was reading Chris Sims' recent article on Batman (1989), and I realized something about all the live action Batman movies (aside from the '66 version, which I never saw): the only one in which each and every villain very clearly survives and Batman is in no way directly the cause of them dying?

Batman and Robin.

So, yeah. That's the one that got Batman right.

I thought Bane died, but I only saw the movie once.

Anyway.  The real takeaway is, you really need to see the '66 version.

It's on Netflix Instant.  And if you don't have Netflix, it's under $10 on Amazon.

...hell's bells, that's going on MY wishlist.

This is also only kind of true. Ra's death(?) in Begins is not that different from any number of scenes in comics where Batman assumes competent people are getting out alive. One of my favorites is from The Demon Lives Again (watching BtAS's Demon's Quest part II is almost a direct animation, though it actually shows goons escaping more explicitly where the comic does not), where Batman sets off an armory causing huge destruction to a complex with hundreds of people in it just as a distraction.

Also, the Ninja straight-up gets killed by molten lava in TAS.

I remember Kyodai tossing Bruce's rope back into the lava.

After last night's Brave & the Bold, I feel like a new gate's been blown open for guest stars. Here's hoping they'll slip in Morpheus or Death in what time remains.

So, somebody posted Dini's Gotham City Sirens on 4chan. It was good! Really, really good! One of my favorite bits was actually a side-story revolving around a reformed Riddler using his incredible wits to solve mysteries for the thrill of it, sort of like House, only instead of Medical mysteries he was solving Crime mysteries. It's a pretty novel idea, actually!

ANYWAY, it got me really excited about The Riddler, the first time I think anyone has actually said that, and I want to read more stories about him solving mysteries like a bad ass.

Then I read on wikipedia that he's a criminal again.

Fuck'n DC.

Also check out Dini's run on Detective Comics, where that thread first kicked off.

Yeah, Private Investigator Riddler was really best Riddler. It's such a shame that other writers and editorial couldn't think of anything else to do with him besides make him a criminal again.

Pity, but hardly surprising.

Seconding Niku's recommendation for the Riddler stories in Tec; the most delightful is one featuring a messageboard where he, Batman, and Detective Chimp all hang out and compare notes.

Really Dini's Tec run was great until he got all into Hush.

...anyway.  Sirens had a half-dozen or so pretty neat issues but Dini quit helming it almost immediately and it was never that good with Lobdell or whoever-the-hell-else writing it.

Apparently MTV has a Year One trailer.

Tell me how it looks, because apparently in this case "exclusive" means that they are excluding people who use Linux from watching their goddamn video.

They show less of it in the trailer than they do in the interview montage they did earlier.

Batman Inc #7 is a neat little self-contained story that does a great job of displaying the potential of the series' premise.  This time we're focusing on Man-of-Bats and Raven, the Batman and Robin of the Lakota-Sioux reservation.

There's something that's always appealed to me about street-level superheroes, the ones who fight poverty and social injustice in their own communities.  I love the idea of an Indian "Batman on a budget" who doesn't have a secret identity and who keeps getting arrested at protest rallies.

Really, this is where we came in -- lest we forget, the superhero genre began with a scrappy Depression-era crusader who fought to protect the little guy.  And I'm quite looking forward to seeing Grant's take on that in Action Comics.

(Nitpick: Grant, we don't say "aircon" in America.  And editors, you should have caught that.)

Hm? I've never been to that reservation, but reservation slang doesn't always conform to urban US standards.
