So, what -- Batman's lost sight of the goal?  He's giving up his chance to win because he's too focused on taking out Talia?
I'm reading it as Talia thinks she knows exactly what Batman will do--the logical thing--and go for a checkmate as quickly as possible. Instead, the dark knight
injects himself with Man Bat serum, jumps in an experimental exoskeleton, and straps on some magic armor and
launches himself at the red queen.

At which point, Batman will be captured by a red pawn. Leaving Ra's victorious.

I expect Ra's has something to do before it's all over, but I picture it being more like the Joker taking down Hurt at the end of Return of Bruce Wayne.  Having him upstage Talia would really run counter to everything Morrison's set up.

He could resurrect Damian, though.

See, this is why I don't read Grant Morrison.

It's exactly why I read Grant Morrison.

And aside: as silly as I think the WTF? gatefold cover gimmick is, I gotta say I really appreciate the craft that's gone into it.  Every single cover is a complete two-panel comic strip, setup and punchline, that also forms a single image.

Imagine what the comics would be like if the writers and artists exercised that level of economy of storytelling on the INSIDES.

(Though in Morrison and Burnham's case, they DID get me to stare at two moves of a fucking chess game for twenty minutes and then get on the Internet to ponder what it meant.  That's gotta count for SOMETHING.)

The latest, Morrison-less issue of Inc is exactly the kind of crazy batshit fun I read the book for.  Hey DC?  If you keep Burnham on as writer instead of canceling the book when Morrison leaves, I'll totally keep picking it up.

I loved this issue from Batman's ascot onward.

On the other hand, I have little faith of a comedic, fun Batman book succeeding in the current market. Not the way DC has been bungling everything. Even after The Brave & the Bold cartoon.

Batman '66 is the exception to the above paragraph.

Yeah, there IS a Batman '66 comic coming and I doubt DC would do two funny Batman comics.  But I guess you never know.

Is the '66 comic out yet?  I haven't seen it.  Saw a bunch of gorgeous cover art at the Allreds' table the other day, though.

I mentioned earlier that I've heard the digital-first DC books don't pay royalties to the writers and artists; that's a pretty big disincentive to buy, for me.  But '66 DOES look pretty damn great.

I don't think so. DC's website says July 31 for the non-digital release.

No royalties on digital sales, though? That's deplorable.

Paul Dini - "Days of Our Lives" scene that inspired "Harley Quinn" character from "Batman"

I never knew just how much Arleen Sorkin was tied to Harley Quinn.

Finally saw Dark Knight Rises.

It was okay. A little excessive.

I liked Dark Knight more.

"A little excessive" is a lot of understatement.

I actually just went back and rewatched all the old Batman films and encountered two painful surprises.

First, that the original Tim Burton flick is fucking terrible. Sure, Nicholson is fun as the Joker, but he's still just being Jack Nicholson. Batman is one of the least heroic characters ever, and I don't mean in an antihero sense. He seems incapable of appearing without being shot and falling down, he pretty much just fucks things up wherever he goes, and he kills a shitload of people with bombs. Batman does that. Without batting an eye. In fact, the only remotely heroic character is the reporter guy. Knox is the only character to do any actual detective work and puts himself in harm's way to help people. Batman, on the other hand, is just a colossally incompetent dick.

The second thing to surprise me is that while Batman and Robin is still an incredibly bad movie, it's also the most internally consistent, committed, and constantly entertaining of the bunch. I'd go so far as to say it's the best of all the pre-Nolan flicks barring the 66 one. Go ahead and crucify me.

I saw Batman and Robin for the second time a few years ago, working with a friend at a thrift store. I realized I enjoyed it. It's incredibly entertaining. It's also kind of genius if you imagine that it's an attempt at taking 60's camp Batman and recreating it with 90's action movie shlock.

...and speaking of Batman cartoons: you forgot Mask of the Phantasm.

I hope.

[THAD EDIT: In response to a post in Worst Dating Advice Ever.  If that link doesn't work for you, there's probably a good reason for that.]

I know this means my chances with Lottel are shot, but I have no idea of the significance of this chain of events, I never cared for that interpretation of Batman, nor really any one but the Timm/Dini-verse Batman (and even then, only when he wasn't sharing the limelight).

I suppose it means she's committed to checking out the goods?

Your chances with me are shot, too.

Don't get me wrong, the DCAU (which, as Weisman likes to point out, should more properly be attributed to Timm and Burnett, as they were the producers and Dini was their subordinate and didn't come on until after the show was already pretty far into development) is still my favorite, but there are so many different versions of Batman that are great (and plenty more that are lousy).

Hell, Dini wrote most of the best episodes of TB&TB anyhow.

It's also got the best version of Aquaman ever.

My bat-mite is the one that gets the show cancelled.

EDIT:
I am trying to indicate that,
yes Thad, I have watched the show and meant to reference that particular exchange. Thanks for finding it
.
