Also we took my 2-year-old nephew to the comic shop the other week and he was enraptured by all the Batman figurines in the display case.  And his favorite was the Sergio Aragones one.

He's a smart kid.

My money's on Kathy Kane.

Rumors are getting progressively stronger that before Comic-Con is out they're going to announce that the 1966 TV series is finally goddamn coming out on DVD, a thing I have only been waiting for since they started putting seasons of TV shows out on DVD.

I mean, what the hell's the point of even HAVING a two-year-old nephew if you can't watch Batman DVD's with him?

(Aside from The Brave and the Bold.  And the 1966 movie.  And Lego Batman.  And certain age-appropriate episodes of Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, and The Batman.)

Sims has a good rundown of the obscure villains appearing on Beware.  I think it's a great call; there have been plenty of damn fine Batman cartoons over the years and the best way to make yourself stand out from the crowd is to use villains that aren't in all those other shows.

Really, in a lot of ways that's what TAS did, too.  Granted, it featured the Joker and Catwoman pretty prominently, but the other A-listers?  Riddler was in, what, three episodes; Penguin wasn't in many more.  I seem to recall Two-Face getting a decent rotation.  Mr. Freeze eventually got his own direct-to-video movie, but aside from that he was primarily used in short and brutally effective doses.  But Poison Ivy was probably more prominent than any of those guys, and Scarecrow, Clayface, Killer Croc, and Ra's al Ghul got pretty regular use too, and prior to then those were relatively obscure characters who only the comic fans were likely to recognize.  And of course Harley was the breakout original character.

Anyway, speaking of Batman and obscurity, two bucks'll get you the Rifftrax of Batman Takes Over, one of the 1940's serial episodes.

Welp, Morrison's all done, after, what, 7 years?

The ending is low-key but satisfying (like All-Star Superman, as opposed to, say, Action Comics and New X-Men, whose endings were the opposite of low-key but satisfying).  It leaves plenty of toys for other people to play with.  I haven't checked yet on whether the book is straight-up cancelled or Burnham is taking over, but I think he did a great job running with the premise in last month's interlude.  Batman Inc is a great idea and I'd hate to see it fall by the wayside.  I'd love to see the book continue on looking like it did during vol 1, before the New 52 reboot and Bruce's return to Gotham; a team-up book where he travels the world and interacts with his various supporting cast members as well as the Batmen of All Nations.

And while Morrison went and killed off poor old Cyril, he's left us with Beryl as Knight, and I'd love to see her with a new Squire.  (Reminder: the Knight and Squire mini by Paul Cornell and Jimmy Broxton was awesome, and is still available as a trade.  Support your local comic shop, but if you don't have a local comic shop, it's $13.49 at Amazon (yadda yadda affiliate link)).

On Morrison's run as a whole: he asked lots of interesting questions, did lots of Morrison-y things -- but the trilogy really hit its peak in its second act, with Dick and Damian as Batman and Robin.  Needless to say, that was never going to last -- but that's the way to do it; always leave 'em wanting more.

Also worth mentioning that a good big chunk of this issue is Bruce talking with Jim -- just like Batman's very first appearance in Detective #27.

Regarding the chessboard scene from a few issues back, this is what one internet poster has to say:

Quote
Fun little detail from Batman Incorporated #10:

R'as is playing chess against himself. The position on board is a draw by perpetual check after Ra5+ bxa5 Qxa5 Kb8 Qb5+ Kc8 Qf5+ Kb8 and so on.

Unfortunately R'as plays the patzer move Rxb2 to prove a point. Black Rh1+ Qg1 Rxg1# wins immediately. Instead black now plays less than best move. The game is prolonged unnecessarily by Nxg5.

Looks like draw is not acceptable, neither is simply winning the game. Making moves just so the game keeps going is the whole idea. R'as seems to understand what is going on very well indeed!

I was hoping for a bit more subtlety to the symbolism, but sure, that works, and is entirely consistent with Ra's's final scene.

Sims interviews the producers of TB&TB; it's as much fun as it sounds.

I love that Alfred takes Katana through the secret elevator to the underground library and pulls a musty tome off the shelf so that he can tell her the ancient legend that the Soul Stealer steals people's souls.

Reliable media outlets are saying it's a real thing -- Reuters 'n' shit -- but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll actually happen.

Seeing as we already just had a guy who played a fantastic Bruce Wayne and less-than-fantastic Batman...
...actually, three, if you add Clooney and Kilmer to the equation.

We can mock, but the film is already being directed by Zack Snyder so it's not like things can get worse.

Zack Snyder is like the Uwe Boll of superhero films but he has the budget to hire competent production people.
