It would appear your president understands the true secret to North American diplomacy and conflict resolution:  A beer between parties on the front lawn

Obama is like the Presidential equivalent of that thoughtful mom who surprises you with little personalized cupcakes in your lunchbox.

Wait a minute. I thought racism was cancelled over in the United States. Didn't you guys elect Obama? Cambridge must be out of the loop or something.

This makes me question my plan to get a native elected to Prime Minister.

You missed the glorious birth of post-racial America back in January, apparently.

So, is this the right thread for discussing the Birther conspiracy? No? Okay, whatever, that doesn't matter. Did anyone else catch the comically-named attorney(??) Orly Taitz freakin' the fuck out during that interview with David Shuster?

Not just crazy to listen to, Orly Taitz has a truly frightening countenance.  It's like a robot set to batshit.

There's a radical difference between the Obama we see and the man that birthers see. The Kenyan, fake birth certificate wielding version of Obama is some sort of abject failure whose misguided attempts at ruining America have left his administration in shambles.

I can't listen to that psychotic for more than 10 seconds without getting a headache from trying to figure out where she gets that ludicrous amount of misinformation and/or what alternate reality is she living in where those falsehoods can be used to logically explain the things that she is trying to explain with them.

The only answer I can ever come up with is "In soviet Russia..."

Hee hee, this reminds me that down in Seattle I was listening to the news report on NPR. They mentioned that not only has Obama actually produced his birth certificate to the correct authorities (so people who have been saying "but why won't he show it?" are actually full of shit), but that his birth was actually celebrated with a printed announcement in both the major Honolulu papers.

OMG MOAR EVIDENZE OF A GRAND CONSPIRACY AMIRITE?!

What has been the "Birthers" response to that? I mean, it's pretty fucking hard to claim with a straight face that this has been some grand conspiracy going on for 40+ years.

Taitz states their view in the video: it's because his mama (herself an American citizen) was in Kenya for some reason and had her baby and didn't want to deal with the hassle of immigration.  So naturally she raced back to the states, got the newspapers to forge the birth announcements then produced a fake birth certificate to seal the deal.  All this in an elaborate scheme to one day destroy America.

It's really a vast conspiracy to them that involves a woman who was clearly a sketchy character!  She did have a child with a black man, and that should tell you something about her character right there!  So naturally she'd be in Kenya doing Kenyan things like shitting on the American flag and cursing the good name of John Kennedy and plotting how best to overthrow this opulent country.  The best way to do that was to fake the citizenship of her son who was black, not from a political family, and who at the time would have been viewed as having no shot at the presidency.  These America-haters are crafty type.

This has two layers though.  One, that Obama is not a citizen and shouldn't be president.  This is easily debunked, and really comes across as racist garbage.  Any non-white president must be decried as not a citizen.

The second layer implies that an American woman can't have her baby abroad.  While not directly related to Obama (he was born in Hawaii, after all), the implications of this are staggering for other US citizens.  They're trying to argue that if a US citizen gave birth to a child outside the United States to a non-native father, he would be ineligible to be a natural born citizen.  Which is ridiculous.  Although, the law is rather unclear on this regard, but that doesn't stop Orly Taitz from spreading legal disinformation about it.

So if I'm following this story correctly, Birthers believe one or more of the following:

  • That the Supreme Court didn't check Obama's birth certificate or citizenship status before allowing him to become President
  • That the Hawaii state department is lying about having Obama's original birth certificate on file
  • That the Hawaii state department is hiding something by not handing over any citizen's birth certificate to anyone who asks
  • That three anonymous image analysts with unproven credentials are all correct in their analysis of Obama's birth certificate as a forgery
  • That the term "natural born citizen" is not ambiguous
  • That "natural born citizen" only applies to children born in the US to US citizen parents, when US courts have made no such ruling and US law holds no such definition
  • That a short form birth certificate is worthless, but a long form certificate is sufficient
  • That Obama's parents advertised his birth in two Hawaii newspapers as a trick to get him an American birth certificate, even though he held American citizenship anyway through his mother at birth
  • That even if Obama was proven a Kenyan, there's any way to depose him except calling for an impeachment
  • That different standards would have applied to John McCain, verifiably born on foreign soil to American parents and who cannot produce his original birth certificate
  • That an ad-hoc jury of citizens has constitutional right to depose the President

Remind me why anyone takes this movement seriously.

Because it makes for a good critical thinking exercise, and we just can't resist feeding a band of obstinate trolls despite our better judgment?

My favorite is that some people evidently found Obama's "Kenyan Birth Certificate" through Google Image Search.  Now, to be way fairer than birthers deserve,  that would not necessarily discredit their argument, but by admitting this they are pretty much being that guy who hit the accelerator to early in Mario Kart 64 and now he's spun out and is desperately hoping for a lightning bolt or triple red shell or something.

I am happy about the birthers because my old standard for the Objectively Dumb Argument, that since overpopulation is a major cause of Africa's problems and the population is fed by American foreign aid we should cut off that aid and let hundreds of millions of people starve to stabilize the region, was getting a little old and I needed new material.

Thanks, Orly!
