They're trying to argue that if a US citizen gave birth to a child outside the United States to a non-native father, he would be ineligible to be a natural born citizen.  Which is ridiculous.  Although, the law is rather unclear on this regard, but that doesn't stop Orly Taitz from spreading legal disinformation about it.

Sidenote: No, it's not.  The only conceivable ambiguity is whether "natural born citizen" is the same as a "national and citizen of the United States at birth", because the two are not explicitly made synonyms.  The circumstances under which someone is a citizen at birth are quite firmly established, and they inarguably include Obama.  Even if Orly Taitz is completely, 100% right about the circumstances of his birth (which she isn't), Obama's still a citizen as per (g).

I love the way they wrote it as if it were a debatable claim tossed out by the Dems.

Quote from: That Article
Taitz's document, described as a certified copy, says Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, in a hospital in Mombasa. The document is dated Feb. 17, 1964, and stamped Republic of Kenya

Quote from: Wikipedia
Mombasa was part of the state of Zanzibar until 12 December 1963 when it was ceded to be incorporated into the newly independent state of Kenya.

  • That Obama's parents advertised his birth in two Hawaii newspapers as a trick to get him an American birth certificate, even though he held American citizenship anyway through his mother at birth

I think most Birthers don't understand this part at all.  Or are racist enough to ignore it.

Or at the very least, believe he's not a "Natural Born Citizen" despite it.  Which might mean that they only believe people born in one of the 13 original colonies are eligible to be president. .... Nah, I think they're just fucking racist bastards....Or unscrupulous right wing bastards looking for any microscopic shred of a reason to get rid of Obama.  Or more likely, both.

I'd casually dismiss them, but after the George Tiller murder, I know how far crazy right-wingers can go when they think they're way of life is threatened.

So if I'm following this story correctly, Birthers believe one or more of the following:

  • That the Supreme Court didn't check Obama's birth certificate or citizenship status before allowing him to become President
  • That the Hawaii state department is lying about having Obama's original birth certificate on file
  • That the Hawaii state department is hiding something by not handing over any citizen's birth certificate to anyone who asks
  • That three anonymous image analysts with unproven credentials are all correct in their analysis of Obama's birth certificate as a forgery
  • That the term "natural born citizen" is not ambiguous
  • That "natural born citizen" only applies to children born in the US to US citizen parents, when US courts have made no such ruling and US law holds no such definition
  • That a short form birth certificate is worthless, but a long form certificate is sufficient
  • That Obama's parents advertised his birth in two Hawaii newspapers as a trick to get him an American birth certificate, even though he held American citizenship anyway through his mother at birth
  • That even if Obama was proven a Kenyan, there's any way to depose him except calling for an impeachment
  • That different standards would have applied to John McCain, verifiably born on foreign soil to American parents and who cannot produce his original birth certificate
  • That an ad-hoc jury of citizens has constitutional right to depose the President

Remind me why anyone takes this movement seriously.

Because all republicans watch is Fox News, which has spun this story to be a lot more truthful than it actually is.

My mother in law spends 8 hours a day on that channel. It's like living with Bill O Reily.

Half the news these days are the insane ramblings of ultra-conservatives. The other half are the point-by-point refuting of said insane ramblings.

Quote from: The Ecomomist"
He has been curiously ill-served by a press short of useful criticism, with liberal America prepared only to debate what sort of water he walks on best, while conservative radio hosts argue over when exactly he became a communist. And of course, government is darned hard: even when you make the right decision—to close Guantánamo, for instance—it can take years to put into effect.

...discovered that Conspiracy Theory Guy at work is a birther.  Was not really surprised.

His argument was that if even Fox News was backing off it as crazy, there MUST be a coverup going on.

I managed to bite my tongue this time, because the last time I contradicted him he spent half an hour explaining how the WMD's were smuggled to Syria.
