At least one person doesn't like the negroes.

It's rural Georgia.  I think it being Carter's hometown is just coincidence.

Is Obama being a one term president seeming more and more likely to everyone else, every single day?

I've never been more jaded with politics in my life, and that includes when republicans had a majority in every branch of government.

I'm leaning more towards impossibly lame duck myself. We've yet to see a Republican that can topple Obama in 2012, though.

I think our best hope for victory is a repeat of New York, where the super conservative and the slightly less super conservative republicans flip out and nominate two seperate candidates for the election.

At this point, the only thing that Obama has accomplished is passing an incredibly unpopular bailout bill, a bailout bill, i might add, that in the interest of 'bipartisanship' had 0 regulatory measures and is currently just proving to be a huge waste of money. Health care reform is dying, we're losing seats at a record rate and allowing the republican party to control us through the empty threat of a filibuster that they could only pull out with democratic support - this shit never would have flown in the Bush administration. Say what you will about George, but the guy knew how to push his party around. As the head of the democratic party Obama fully has the power to hit people in the pocketbooks or their power bases by threatening to pull endorsements and funding. But he won't.

What I worry about is less Obama not getting reelected and more Obama ending up being the Carter of a new generation. The last thing we need is a continuation of the thirty year image of our party consisting entirely of spineless wimps who can't accomplish anything. Carter created a generation of republicans and political defeatists - my mother in law votes republican because of Carter, and my father in law does not vote at all for the same reason.

No.

Heads are going to roll in Congress, but the Republicans still haven't produced anyone I can even imagine competing with Obama in '12.

I think our best hope for victory is a repeat of New York, where the super conservative and the slightly less super conservative republicans flip out and nominate two seperate candidates for the election.

Unless the super-conservative is Sarah Palin, I really don't see that happening.  Nader's effect in 2000 is greatly exaggerated (all statewide recounts still showed Florida going to Gore), as is Perot's in '92 -- and Perot had a shit-ton of money and actually got news coverage and debate participation.

What's a pity is that Nader had just enough impact to get scapegoated for Bush stealing the election, which has crushed any chance at a viable liberal third party for the past decade and the foreseeable future (though if the Dems keep telling the base to fuck off, I think defections will happen sooner rather than later).  Frankly the mess we're in now has reminded me why I voted Nader in the first damn place.

At this point, the only thing that Obama has accomplished is passing an incredibly unpopular bailout bill, a bailout bill, i might add, that in the interest of 'bipartisanship' had 0 regulatory measures and is currently just proving to be a huge waste of money.

Well, the only TANGIBLE thing he's accomplished.  The fact that the rest of the world no longer hates us is nothing to sneeze at.

we're losing seats at a record rate

Wait, what?

What the fuck are you talking about?

We've lost one seat in the Senate (leaving the Democrats with STILL the greatest single-party majority in 30 years, despite what their "we're so helpless!" whining would have you believe) and one in the House.  I mean, I guess that MIGHT be a record since we're already losing seats nine and a half months before most of the country votes, but...while I'm sure the Democrats will lose more seats in November, it's a little early to be saying how many.

and allowing the republican party to control us through the empty threat of a filibuster that they could only pull out with democratic support

Depends on what you mean by "support".  If you mean votes, it bears noting that Lieberman is fucking not a Democrat (and Brown's going to be seated any day, which means 41 Republicans); if you mean the Democrats lying down like a bunch of fucking pussies, then yes, I agree.

Better a Carter than a Clinton.

Uh, do you mean better than a moderate, or better than a President who lost control to the Republicans after famously flopping on the health care issue?

I believe the technical term here is "delegate to committee".

There's a lesson in this.

I won't argue on the rest of these points - I've only slept about 7 hours of the last 60 so I'm pretty tired and my thoughts are disjointed, but I will say in response to this ; unless Obama fixes the fucking economy and passes health care reform that actually works, his foreign policy is only going to be used against him in 2012. I can already see the ads in my mind: "While Americans suffered at record unemployment rates, Obama was having tea with the queen..." "While middle class america was shrinking at a record rate, Barack Obama was palling around with terrorists like Hugo Chavez and Kim Jong Il..." "Isn't it time for a president who cares about American problems?"

I'm gonna have to request that nobody else use the word "record" unless they accompany it with...

No, I don't want to see that either, actually.  Stop using that word.

Gotta say one thing for the man - when he loses on one front, he doesn't show any fear in just packing up and taking the fight to another.

Since I can't really link at the moment: Obama just laid out his plan for new banking regulation, and judging by the market reaction it looks like he just struck all the big players right in their fruits.  They're gearing up for a pretty big fight, but it's going to be tough for them.  EVERYONE is angry at the financial industry right now.  As someone who just found out today that his bank arbitrarily jacked his credit card rate from ten to fifteen percent, I'm gonna have to just say fuck you guys, enjoy your hamstringing.

All in all I think this is a BRILLIANTLY timed move.  The GOP is patting itself on the back for successfully feeding Obama a poison pill.  He's going to send them back an explosive one.  Health care is way too complicated for centrists to form a real opinion about, but I think "these corporate assholes are stealing all your money and the Right is trying to help them keep doing it" is an easy enough point to get across.

I agree that it's a good move for O-Dawg to try and get an easy success in the bag to help give him some political capital to go back and fight the bigger fights.

Of course that's the same kind of thinking that leads to leaders proposing "A short, victorious little war"*, but it can be a solid strategy in moderation. Just so long as he doesn't abandon the Health Care fight entirely in the interim.

*No, I'm not saying that Obama will literally declare wars of distraction. Come on guys, it's just an expression.

One thing worth saying about him being wimpy on the war on terror, is that despite taking his time on the big choice, Iraq has successfully been reduced under his guard, and he is the fastest man on record to authorize drone attacks in Somalia and the active theatres.

His actions on Haiti are tough decisions, given that 10000 is a large number of overstretched US soldiers, but his persuasion has been able to squeeze troops out of Canada I didn't know we had, as well as Israel and Brazil to assist in Haiti.  The fact that he calls for Brazil, Canada and US to take the lead role in reconstituting Haiti is also a good move for South American diplomacy - "you, Brazil are our partners, not our subordinates" is what I take out of it.

Uh, do you mean better than a moderate, or better than a President who lost control to the Republicans after famously flopping on the health care issue?

Both.

They're going to do that anyway.

The Democrats have spent the past 20 years bending over backwards to show how corporate-friendly they are just so the right will quit calling them socialists.  Remind me again how that's worked out for them.

The point where they start worrying about how the right is going to spin something is the point where they've already lost.  They need to get the fuck onto the offensive.

That said?  Yes, if the economy is still in the shitter in '12, yes, of COURSE that's going to hurt Obama -- and rightly so.  And as far as I can see, that's pretty much the only situation where there's any chance at all of him losing reelection.  Because again, the Republicans ain't got shit to run against him.

Health care is way too complicated for centrists to form a real opinion about, but I think "these corporate assholes are stealing all your money and the Right is trying to help them keep doing it" is an easy enough point to get across.

Here's the thing, though: healthcare is NOT too complicated for centrists to form a real opinion about.  People are just as pissed at their insurance companies as they are at their banks.  Moreso, in some cases -- the insurance companies aren't just hitting their pocketbooks, they're allowing physical harm to come to them.

The Democrats fucking OWNED healthcare a year ago, and they spent that year fucking themselves out of the victory.

Obama can own banking reform, just like he could have owned healthcare reform, but he has to learn from his mistakes.  He can't just sit back for eight months and let Max Baucus dither while Harry Reid kisses Joe Lieberman's ass and Fox News rewrites the narrative.  He's got to take what he did today and keep on doing it.

I think he conducted himself pretty well in the SotU tonight.

He's made it clear over the last week or two that he has a firm grasp of exactly how he's fucked up -- thinking good policy would speak for itself, that Congress could make its case without him putting himself out there, and that Republicans were at all interested in bipartisanship, to name a few.  So that's heartening.

Of course, acknowledging what you've done wrong and actually fixing it are two different things.  But the fact that he's actually cognizant of his mistakes may be the single most important difference between him and Bush.

I noticed that in the SOTU he stayed away from partisan politics for the most part and focused on middle of the road stuff that a republican wouldn't want to be caught booing / not clapping for. Watching the SOTU, it's restored my confidence in Obama as an electable leader, if nothing else. The guy oozes charisma, and I can't see the republicans putting a challenger out who wouldn't embarass themselves. McCain was their greatest hope and the Obama team managed to paint him as a doddering old idiot, after all - I forgot all about Obama's speechmaking skills, and jesus the guy is good, even if he's reading off a teleprompter. When he says something he just seems to believe it, and makes you want to believe it too. I imagine he could tell americans that he was going to send a football helmet full of large curd cottage cheese to every home and have his poll numbers go up.
