That sort of thing always seems to plateau after about a year or so.

Special Olympics.

Should we talk about this?  Is this something we need to be talking about?  I mean the whole thing is hilarious, but not the sort of hilarious that really makes for good liberal asshole fodder.

... is there something to talk about?  I haven't heard anything about the special olympics.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

I'm in PST, so I'll be watching the thing in a short while myself, but initial noise sounds like media chatter over self-depreciating humor.  (EDIT)  Further watching tells me that the it will either be a slow news day or the media is getting lazy.

Could be wrong, will find out shortly myself.

Christ, if I were fined every time I made a self-depreciating 'retard' joke, the resultant money produced would pay off the US national debt... with enough left over to buy a brand new cuppy helmet.

Anyway...

As we grow closer and closer to the generations who have gown up under the 4chan umbrella, so will more of these kinds of things escape. Obama knows that he has to be excruciatingly careful with his speech now, but he is a mostly normal man, and things will slip through now and then.

In a way that's a bit of a shame. I rather miss the days when men carried their predjudices on their sleeves, because let me tell you, it's not that they've been overcome, or that we become all that much more open-minded (though we have made some tangible improvement, Obama symbolizing that in an impressive way), just that people know to keep their fool traps shut in public, which only masks the issue and leaves us with cardboard cutouts instead of leaders.

Wow, then I guess it's a good thing you aren't president of the united fucking states, huh?

We all feigned shock and disgust whenever Bush stuck his foot in his mouth, and rightly so.  If there is anyone on this god damn planet who should be concerned with maintaining a sense of decorum, it is a head of state.  No, I don't think this reveals some DEEP-SEATED PREJUDICE OMG in Obama but he deserves to get smacked around a bit for it.

I had a comprehensive-but-bland reply typed up... but I thought of something better:

Methinks the pacobird doth protest too much.

Yeah, Obama making a self-deprecating his joke with a rather un-PC reference to the Special Olympics is like when Bush made jokes about there not being any WMDs in Iraq.

He apologized the next morning to the chairman of the Special Olympics.  Good on him.

Gaffes really shouldn't be Obama's comedy to the world.  Almost every president has a special brand of humor whether it be Clinton's sex drive, Bush Jr's murder of the English language.  I suspect that in time, the comedy of this presidency is going to be how America burnt out the man, and reverted back to mediocre/normal presidents afterwards.

Was referring to things like "misunderestimate".

Let me put it this way: remember that picture of Cheney with his colostomy bag showing a rather monstercock-like imprint on his pants?  What if Leno had made a crack to him about it, and Cheney had laughed it off by suggesting if his dick were really that big he'd have to play for the Harlem Globetrotters?

Wait wait wait.  Were you offended by that?  I just thought it was a stupid gaffe worthy of mocking.  You can't lump "bad jokes" into "unintentional gaffes".  For good or bad, Obama was intentionally making a joke about the Special Olympics, rather than mis-pronouncing or making an otherwise unintended statement.

I was not offended by it personally, for the same reason I would have a hard time being offended by Joe Biden going on the View and yelling NIGGERS NIGGERS NIGGERS: because I am cold and dead inside.  That does not mean I am oblivious to the fact that the joke is objectively offensive.  This is because I have the empathy of at least a 5-year-old.

I tend to lump "offensive jokes on national television when you are the fucking president" into "really terrible judgment".

I'm pretty sure that there are some people who would say that seriously. So I'm hesitant to condemn people for throwing little hissy fits.

On an unrelated note, it's kind of comforting to know that someone in charge makes the same kind of poorly chosen word choices I do, and presumably for the same reasons. I know how a redneck feels and why they were so excited about boosh.

Thad's said this a couple times before, but I guess it bears repeating.

When I make a joke in terrible taste that I stole from Ben Stiller oh God kill me it's doesn't really matter because I'm just some asshole on the internet who makes jokes in bad taste.

When the god damned Leader of the Free World makes a joke in terrible taste, well, it matters.
