What the ever loving fuck was that one-off Marvel comic where the world is shit? You know, pretty much what you'd expect if those guys showed up here. Galactus found dead in space, Wolverine is a bum, Jean Gray is a whore, and half the people exposed to radiation died of whole bunches of cancer (though it still turned them green,) etc?

Because that thing was fucking boss.

It's based on Marvels, with the same reporter character chronicling the same period of time, except with every event going absolutely the worst possible way.

SEE ALSO: THE PUNISHER KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE.

(ruins is better for the bleakness though)

Right. That's the thing. Hilariously awful stuff. Figures it was Ellis.

I don't usually read comics, but this one is hilarious.  Even if I don't follow half of it.

Is this your first encounter with Warren Ellis, Brent?  Because there's a hell of a lot more hilariously twisted shit where that came from.  In fact, he claims he has more TPB's in print than anybody else.

Hell, want some free Ellis?  Fell #1, free.

(Also, not Ellis, but the original Marvels that Ruins parodies is one of my all-time favorites.)

Haven't read Ruins.  Know it's only two issues, but is there a trade by any chance?

...Also: the Castlevania: Dracula's Curse blog hasn't been updated since December.  Wonder when that'll be out.

Punisher: The End?

No, it's a single comic actually titled The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, done by Ennis before he got all Punisher-popular.

Yes, it is, and for the record I'm not laughing with him.

...unless his schtick really is mocking comic books for taking themselves too seriously.  Then I'm laughing with him.

It could be that he considers himself "too good" for conventional superhero comics, and won't touch them unless allowed to grumble about it while doing so or given carte blanche to change the characters like he did in Ruins or Nextwave, which is to say, without regard for anyone else using them.  The Ultimates line might be an exception, though that is mostly alternate character interpretations so...

Oh okay. Because Punisher: The End is like some kind of all-time winner for bleakness in Marvel comics. I think Garth Ennis wrote that too and Corben illustrates.

Yeah. It's good.

Also on the subject of Warren Ellis, it's worth checking out FreakAngels, a webcomic he's writing.

Note that it comes out in episodes of 6 pages, which is nice for updates but frustrating when you're trying to read the archive; it's very easy to move to the next episode instead of the next page, which can lead to some delightful non sequiturs.

It is.  Well, that and general cynicism and irreverence.

(Although, tangent: you should have said "superhero comic books" or "mainstream comic books" or some variation thereupon.  Comics is a medium, not a genre.)

Another tangent: Mike Allred's Madman started out largely as a parody of the "dark and gritty" trend of the 1990's -- in the first few pages, Madman yanks out a guy's eye and eats it.

It seems quite the non sequitur in hindsight, given that he's such an upbeat, childlike character.  (And Allred's recently retconned the whole eye-eating bit, saying Madman actually used his mental powers to make the guy THINK he'd just yanked his eye out and eaten it.  Whatever.)

I could have said that, but it would imply that the rest of the medium doesn't take itself too seriously.

Still think the guy is walking too fine a line between parody and genuine silliness.  Sort of like if you're just acting like a dumbass, but you do it too perfectly, you just plain end up being a dumbass (sup Guild).

I just think he's obnoxious when he carries on like that. Congrats. You can pick on a funnybook genre that has its roots in entertaining children. I don't think you deserve an Eisner for it.

...So, yeah. I'm repeating Brent today. Fancy that.

Well, let me possibly contradict myself and go on record as saying I have nothing wrong with the genre maturing.  It's just the way it goes about it that bugs me sometimes... you know that one Shortpacked! strip where Frank Miller writes a page that's just "WHORES WHORES WHORES WHORES WHORES" etc?  Yeah, it's like that, except the epilogue is that Shortpacked! and all the other webcomics then turn around and start doing the same thing.

That and there seems to be an unspoken rule that when Superman goes gritty, everything goes gritty with him.  EVERYTHING.  Even Sunday paper comics are a little depressing, and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane is seem as some kind of minor revolution.

 ::(:

Then again, I don't read these either way.  So I gotta admit that my opinion isn't exactly worth the paper it's printed on.

Warren Ellis might not be entirely too fond of superheroes, but compared to company beaus like Millar, Ennis and Meltzer he's practically sucking Superman's dick.
