...So Scrubs has managed to get funny again...in the THIRD-TO-LAST EPISODE.  There were probably as many laughs before the opening credits as in the rest of the season up to that point.  I'd say it should have ended two years ago, but then we wouldn't have gotten the musical episode, so I'll say it should have ended one year ago.

I hope it manages to tie up the remaining loose ends in a satisfying manner and, more importantly, to keep up the funny for two more weeks; asking for anything unpredictable is of course a little much, especially given that the remaining episodes are titled "My Princess" and "My Commitment".

...Okay.  "Last" Scrubs: confusing.  Because A) it did not close the series and B) it was fucking shown out of sequence; Kelso was still Chief of Medicine, even though he retired two weeks ago.

A quick look around the Internets says that the planned last episode was a casualty of the writers' strike, but that ABC's picking it up for another season.  Which leaves me with very mixed feelings.  It needs a conclusion, but what it doesn't need is another damn mediocre season.

Season 7 is one of the clearer victims of the writer's strike. Not that the quality of the episodes has anything to do with that, though it could to some extent, but just the massive gap in airing during the strike, and NBC's apparent ambivalence toward the series post strike. Hopefully the eighth season will be appropriately handled, and end the series well.

Christ Almighty, there are 7 seasons of that show?

I watched the first three, and I was startled at the extent to which all of the major plot developments were set up in Season 1 and hadn't progressed in any meaningful way since then.  Every time I catch a random episode on Comedy Central, I'm pleased to find that I can still identify with absolutely everything that is going on; it's just that there are more babies.

I'd say not, because season 6 was equally bad.  (The musical episode notwithstanding.)

but just the massive gap in airing during the strike, and NBC's apparent ambivalence toward the series post strike.

Which was probably because by the time the strike was over they'd already struck a deal with ABC.

Hopefully the eighth season will be appropriately handled, and end the series well.

Tough call.  I really don't see "Cox as Chief of Medicine" making for a lot of good plots; it worked as an (admittedly predictable) ending for the series, but it's not something I'm interested in seeing explored.  I'm sure that if they'd known at the time there was another season coming, they would have held off on the whole "Kelso retires" story (I'm assuming it was the writers' choice and not Ken Jenkins's, and have a hunch we'll be seeing him back next season in some capacity, possibly as a patient).

Scrubs season 8 talk.

Oh sweet Christ they are actually considering continuing for a ninth season without Braff.  (Worked great for That '70s Show!)

Well, to be fair, Braff's character has only become more and more painfully obnoxious throughout the series and, quite honestly, he's pretty much the least likeable, if not the only unlikeable, character on the show.

Not his fault.  It's the writers'.  And him leaving will not make the writing better.

The writing's fine (well, mostly), it's just that that one character kind of sucks. Unfortunately, that character is the protagonist.

Most of the characters have been coasting for the past two or three years.  When's the last time Elliot, Turk, or Carla showed any depth?  Even Cox is one-note most of the time, albeit a generally good note.

And the problem is that the writers know this and, instead of fixing it, have up to this point just made a bunch of self-referential jokes about it (see: entire season finale).

But, hell, X-Files managed to put out some pretty decent stuff after Mulder left.  So who the hell knows.

Not talking about depth here, Thad.

I guess our misunderstanding stems from the fact that I like characters with depth.

EDIT:

Not talking about depth here, Thad.

Maybe you could tell me what the hell you ARE talking about instead of just leaving me to guess and then bolding your uselessly vague choice of words when I guess incorrectly.

Stop being so high-bullshit.

Carla is the worst character on that show.  More than once she has prevented Turk from any kind of self-improvement because she needs him to spend 7 days a week in her presence.  Also, it's not just that JD becomes unlikeable, it's because the show eventually evolved into plotlines about the main character's girlfriend faking a miscarriage to carry his illegitimate child.  And every episode ends with sappy music as all the characters learn that patients in a hospital might die.  It's supposed to be a comedy.

I agree that the current episodes are lacking compared to the first 3 seasons.  And I think it'd be extremely stupid to do a season without JD, as thad pointed out, that 70's show sucks when they tried it. Also, why did they get rid of kelso? He was one of the funniest characters. They're keeping Cox, right?

They got rid of Kelso because they thought the show was ending.

Now that it's not, they're bringing him back through an utter contrivance (in a previous episode he won a lifetime supply of free muffins, so now he's going to be hanging around the coffee bar).

1) Scrubs is still airing? They should have cancelled it after season 2.*
2) I'm pretty damn sure I saw the episode of That 70's show where the year became 1980. In fact, the episode ended right before anyone could scream, "Happy New Year," which brings me to 3:

*Maybe they're more tolerable in sequence, but I've found that's actually just a know-what-the-fuck-is-happening placebo to cure not-funny-anymore-characters disease. The television show I'm writing now is much better. It's about three friends who hang out in a bar, and one of them hates television and rants about it all the time.

Yeah, probably.  Though 3-5 were decent, 6 had its moments, and 7 had I think one good episode.  With 8, I am hoping they squeeze out a few more decent episodes and then fucking end it.

No, that was the last episode.

I seem to vaguely remember a horrible attempt at a spinoff 70's called "That 80's Show".  Was this just a fevered nightmare?
