I stopped playing HL2 right before Ravenholme.  Maybe someday I will resume my play.

But if I ever see another goddamn hovercar again it will be too soon.

I couldn't get much past Ravenholme the first time I played it, but the second time I was in a state of gaming bliss for about 8-10 hours.  Haven't gotten around to the Episodes yet, should probably pick up the Orange Box except right now I'm paying for my sister's hospital bills 'cause my parents are trash.  Hoo-fuckin'-ray!

...

I should play HL2 again.

I stopped playing HL2 right before the best part.  I also walked out of Reservoir Dogs right before Michael Madsen cuts that guy's ear off and then dances around him covering him in gasoline.  I also stopped listening to the 1812 Overture right before the fucking cannons go off.  I also stopped reading the Hobbit right before the dwarf orgy.

To reiterate: I stopped playing HL2 during Ravenholme.

I had trouble making the hoverboat go where I wanted it to, but the rest of the time was great. I have no objection to experiencing the highest-quality examples of FPS tropes.

Ravenholme?  You mean FLING GIANT BUZZSAWS PURCHASED IN EXCESS BY GORDON FROHMAN AT EVERYTHING THAT MOVES?  I loved every second I held a giant buzzsaw.

It's a science fact that Ravenholm is the best part of the game. If you didn't enjoy it, you might as well quit because it doesn't get any better. Ever. That includes Episodes 1 and 2.

Don't look at me, I've enjoyed all of HL2 and it's episodes.  It's one of the few FPSs I've truly enjoyed, rather than suffered through.

My favorite bits of HL2 are everything up to and excluding the airboat sequence. The rest is good, but there's something about the broad daylight, city-wide manhunt that tickles me just right.

Ravenholm is okay, but I typically don't enjoy horror sequences in games. (Or in anything, really.) The fact that I even bothered to play it through does speak volumes though.

The airboat sequences are definitely weak, but they're still worlds better than the vehicle sections in most games, and I found the payoff of killing the gunship to be quite satisfying. I think my favorite sequence is the Nova Prospekt sequence, beginning with the approach up the beach and ending with the delayed teleport back to Kleiner's lab. The pacing/level design is fantastic. The flow from beach into ruined prison into retrofitted prison into fully converted combine facility is seamless, and extremely engrossing. Some might complain about the turret defense sequences, but I quite enjoy them, and if you think they're too hard you are bad at game.

Breen's rants about the failure of the combine forces up to that point are great as well. They serve to inform the player about the state of the world, give some hints on the back story, the structure of the combine and Gordon's whereabouts during the missing time between games, as well as stroke your ego a little bit.

I almost feel like playing through it again.

I agree with what Bal said mostly! Even so, HL2 is the weakest game in the Orange Box (besides peggle, i guess?) and is the chronologically closest to Valve's Shit Period where they released HL1 and there are some very legitimate complaints you can level at the game (HI CAR SECTION)

The music snippets and everything Bal said just make a great atmosphere for the game.

Also it's kind of nice to be a guy who inspires hope in every non-hostile you encounter, and you've never said a word.
