Random catch-all thread
« on: February 16, 2008, 12:07:31 AM »

Study: Religion colors Americans' views of nanotechnology.

Nothing new.  Just setting up a centralized place to bitch about how the Flying Spaghetti Monster instills fear of progress.

This bugs me, because it overshadows the fact that nanotechnology is scary for a lot of perfectly valid reasons.

Does anyone here understand what about nanotechnology is morally corrupt?  Is it "gaining knowledge is embracing original sin!!!  We must remain ignorant" or something that a functioning chain of logic can't begin to comprehend?

We'll never know what gets prevented, so I'm guessing that me writing this prevented nuclear catastrophe.

In the meantime, Wisconsin as part of the "mid-west" is apparently the "ideal"American cross-section. Pulling 1000 people from the "mid-west" is supposed to be almost as good as pulling 1000 people from the whole country.

Wait. So chemistry, nuclear science, and the entire upper end of the periodic table are immoral?

I always thought this in high school.

It's regional, and those taking it to that degree are thankfully the minority.  Still, it's never the best or most moderate (which are by no means the same thing) that gets showcased; it's the most ghastly and entertaining.  Finding video on youtube of people whose wits have left 'em is way, way too easy.

What are the alternatives to living in the US, anyway?  As an English-speaker you've got Great Britain, which invented serial murderers, Australia, which was invented by serial murderers, and Canada, which will turn you into a serial murderer.

Don't get me wrong, I love serial murder (especially in Canada), but where in the world will your idea of sanity actually have any weight?

There's a certain irony to this, even though she's obviously further gone than most.

Didn't see a thread for this purpose, so while we know Arc loves making thread icons...

Whoever's moderating, feel free to split and/or merge stuff in here as necessary.

So I'm not too sure if the world really cares about boring trite issues such as provincial budgets in some northern constitutional monarchy, but British Columbia just introduced what might be the first large-scale carbon tax.

From what I have been reading, it is supposed to be a revenue-neutral tax that is introduced at the gas pumps starting slowly and working its way up for 20 years in terms of tax/litre.  All the money will go towards lowering income taxes throughout the province supposedly.

Right now, everyone will get a 100 CAD cheque from the provinces, and then the first increase of about 5 cents will take place on Canada day, which is the first of July.

For someone like myself who gets around with a bike, or kayak and only drives his car to keep it in check for the roadtrips, this really makes my life more livable.

I don't think it's going to be the same for anyone who lives significantly north of the 49th, however.

You're not Tom Cruise, in case you were planning to get lost in Japan in a drunken stupor, miraculously learn the local language, somehow get accepted as a god-damn samurai and end up leading some bullshit melee charge against your own kind, which you manage to be the only survivor of.

No.  You're not Tom Cruise.

It's all speculative, but the space shuttle just doesn't quite fit in with the tone of the document.

I would be in agreement, but I've just ascertained this information:

Quote from: Ohio.com
A Navy missile soaring 130 miles above the Pacific smashed a dying and potentially deadly U.S. spy satellite Wednesday and probably destroyed a tank carrying 1,000 pounds of toxic fuel, officials said.

Nevermind about the unknown fate of the toxic tank we've just blown to kingdom & come, instead focus on the true threat. If a terrorist had hijacked the shuttle, the entirety of that toxic tank (and hundreds of others just like it) could be raining down from the sky at this very moment.
