The Legend Of Zelda: Envoy of Chaos
« on: February 17, 2008, 09:29:27 AM »

Overview

The Legend of Zelda: Envoy of Chaos is a fan project that I've been working on for about a month now (started in Nov 07) for the purpose of learning more about how to use J2ME and developing video games for mobile phones.

Envoy of Chaos will most likely work with any phone that has J2ME.
Though if you don't have one you should try out the PC version.

Please tell me of any bugs, or ways to improve Envoy of Chaos in the forums.
Also, please do not host Envoy of Chaos on your site without premission.

Updates

I have fixed Envoy of Chaos so that if your phone has a small screen the game scrolls so you can still play it like it was meant to be.

I have also made the PC version fully playable, though the day and night system doesn't work (You can turn that off though).

Progress

I would say that it is about 50% done.

Overview

This is a Zelda fan game for mobile phones that I've been working on for the purpose of learning J2ME. The second demo fetures an entire other doungeon as well as an updated HUD and various other fetures designed to inprove the quallity of the game. There is a PC version for demo 1 hosted on rapidshare, but now for demo 2. Do not host without permission.

EoC was designed for the Nokia 5300 mainly, but will most likely work with any phone that has J2ME and a 240x300 screen.

Please tell me of any bugs, or ways to improve EoC in the forums.
Also, please do not host EoC on your site without premission.

If you enjoy this game you can motivate me to work on it more by posting in my forums or by donating money to me (done by going to my site and clicking the paypal button on the bottom left.)

Progress

I would say that it is about 70% done.

Here's what you want to do. Send Niku and myself* a free copy of the finished game. You don't have to worry about us sharing it, we're good people. Let us honestly review it and if we give it a good score you'll start making money from members.

*Niku and I are polar opposites in skill level, and I am an abhorrently tenacious completionist. Sample: I once got Alucard to level 79. Try it some time.

The game is free, and while the game isn't finished the second demo is finished, and you can get it , for free, by following the download link. Also, I would be very happy if you both wrote a review.

You don't charge for your games?

Do you suck at making them?

Also, I will review the demo.

No, and sometimes, but EoC is getting better and better. It doesn't suck like Mario Clone.

Not owning a handheld, here's my contribution.

PC Demo:

Cons

Lack of a story? Not as big a deal for me, but some might be like "feh."

In the lost woods entering the screen from any edge places Link in a predetermined position on the corresponding edge, occasionally causing instant damage due to enemy placement. Rather than take my time and figure out the pattern carefully I was annoyed into just sprinting around getting hit until I got a game over or figured out the next direction to go in.

Enemies that require more hits are only challenging (read: fun) when the sword has less than instant use time OR (preferrably) when the enemy recieves knockback as well as damage. As it was I just doubletapped the sword key.

Pros

The sword has a decent range allowing me to whack several enemies at a time.

The character sprite is forgiving on contact with enemies, meaning I could squeeze past certain enemies with little problem.

I wanted to put this as a con, but I found myself digging it by the time I reached the Skeleton Knight: Emo Link.

UP LEFT LEFT DOWN LEFT DOWN

Infinite arrows, balanced by slow flight speed and limit of 1 onscreen arrow at a time.

Overall: I would spend five dollars for a full version of the current engine, no problem.

since I've gotten a lot of criticism from people on my shitty Youtube Trailer,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jVdLntBW6U, about the game being emo, and also because you guys here seem to be saying it a lot as well, I've decided to being work on "de-emoing" my game.

Now the first thing I thought of is the fact that if you don't turn the day/night system on the game begins at night, and stays that way. This could make people think the game is suppose to be dark, when it's really just that they didn't turn the system on.

The second thing is the sword which I've decided to change it from a red blade to a silver one.

The final thing is Link. I am experimenting on ways to change his look to still keep what I want to show so that he's different, but not make him look wrist-cutting emo. I've thought about turning him blue, giving him blue eyes, and giving him green eyes. Please tell me what you think of these sprites.

You don't have to be smarter than SoraCross to realize that charging money for an illegitimate Nintendo property will cause your loved ones to find you one morning brained to death with a 1989 Game Boy (which will still work despite the cranial trauma it inflicted).
