Which brings to mind the question: if everyone's in it for themselves here, what do you do with team-based games?

For my music trivia, I was going to post a "Sign up here" thread, and then just form teams from the eligible entrants. Perhaps team contests can work like that.
Alternatively, require people to form teams to do it.
Alter-Alternatively, combine the two. Those who want to can partner up, and the judge(s) fill out the rest of the teams.

Pick partners and point share.  Or, sign up to play and get assigned your partners.  Depends on the event.

Though, I think my Prisoner's Dilemma idea kicked more ass.

Step 1:

Everyone gets to answer five "feeler questions." The top two "feeler" answerers are elected team captains. Captains alternate picking teammates. Whoever got most "feelers" right picks first.

Step 2:

Teams battle, each individual player PMing his response to the DM. As long as a team gets 1 correct answer they get a group point. All players who sent in the correct answer also get an extra point.

Step 3:

Guildenstern gets his pick from amongst the virgins of the village for his "ceremonial piercing ritual."

Final Fantasy 1 playthrough with tiered point systems depending on which party you play through the game with.  GBA version banned.

So... PS1 and PSP versions are okay then.

Not to sound like a jerk here but I vote against chess as a game included in the board game thing simply because it always turned into James, Cait, and me playing the final round when we had teams... I mean it's sort of unfair. Sorry... Carry on.

I'd like to play chess but it always seems hard to get people together. I think we need a structured tournament for this one to work. Giving people the chance to fuck of... generally means they will, at least with this one. Perhaps I'm the only one that likes chess. I'm fine with not playing if we don't get enough people.

A play through of Ocarina of time's Adult Sacred Forest Meddow and Forest Temple with 3 hearts, and no magic.

Also, a game review contest to see who gives the best review for a game.

The first is a little like Niku's suggestion: You're probably an expert at doing what you propose and you're trying to show off.

I really like the second one.

In general whoever suggests an event probably shouldn't be competing in it.

If we're going to do a speedrun, and I think we should, it should be of a game that is somewhat enjoyable, but difficult, instead of tardhard and tedious. Don't think most people are masochistic enough to want to suffer through four hours of white mage schlocking for bragging rights.

Thinking Descent, Gurilla War, Lifeforce, Turtles in Time, Ninja Five-O, or T-T-T-Turok 2.

For the game review: Call it Who Wants To Try To Do Sharkey's Job: Players select their game from a list provided by Kazz. Suggestions: Nintendo greatest hits like SMB3 and GoldenEye. Maybe a good ol' fashioned RTS like Command and Conquer thrown in for variety.

For the record, I have never completed the original non-broken Final Fantasy.  I don't think I ever even got the airship.

I got to the final dungeon once.

ONCE. :ohshi~:

EDIT: Y'know, even if this event does go belly up, I'd still like to do Lyrai's Guess That Tune thing again at least.  Maybe I'll get lucky like I did last year and squeak an upsetting victory.  That still brings back the warm fuzzies.  It all came down to whether or not that Secret of Evermore track was used in Ivor Tower or Ebon Keep.  I forget which one it was, but yeah.
